Warning....before going any further....the following posts could contain spoilers.

What is the connection with the green apple? Bombosa offers one to Elizabeth early in the film - she thinks it's poisoned, Captain Jack takes a few bites of one and Bombosa throws the remaining apple away, and then at the end, the apple rolls out of Bombosa's hand.

I got so much out of it seeing it for the second time - caught a lot more of the little things - but the apple still has me confused.

ALSO - I read that if you stay through the ending credits, there's a surprise. WELL, we stayed last night, and the theater cut the credits off early!!!!

If there is such a surprise, could someone please PM me with it. I wouldn't want to cause any friction by posting it here.;)

I thought the apple reference was a nod to Snow White and the witch......

TwinMom, I saw it yesterday for the first time, and I definitely want to go back and see it again to catch everything I missed (and because it was a great movie)! And after I left the theater, I thought I heard that something was on...I could hear talking after just music during the credits. I should know better than to leave a Disney movie before then, but I had 3 antsy 10 yr old boys with me.

Small spoiler here:

I'm not sure I read much into that. I just thought that because when cursed, the pirates weren't able to enjoy food (turned to ash in their mouthes) or much of anything, that they just kept using an apple as an easy item to toss around to others. Like Captain Jack new dang well that Barbossa couldn't enjoy it and so did he, so he just tossed it.

Here's a quote I found from an article here http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2003-04-03-pirates_x.htm

Says Bruckheimer: "The pirates can't enjoy the pleasures in life. They just are consumed with greed. What Barbossa really wants is a nice green apple to bite into."

Nah, Jack became cursed once he ate the apple. Remember, Jack was in the moonlight in the fort's prison but only after eating the apple did he later turn into a skeleton in the moonlight. That's my theory anyways.

At the end of the credits, there is a surprise. Nothing like a good setup for the sequel. ;)

SPOILER ALERT HERE!!!!

Scott, I am pretty certain it was the stolen coin that made him cursed... not the apple. Just like at the end with the extra bit after the credits as well...

After seeing it twice, I tend to agree with the fact that it was the stealing of the coin that caused Jack to be cursed and then turn skeletal in the moonlight.

I'm beginning to now think that the apple was just a pleasure that Bombosa was never able to enjoy once he was cursed, and he was just WAITING for the day that he could enjoy life's pleasures again.

Just my opinion....

***** SPOILER WARNING*****

Helenabear explained the green apple connection very well.

The curse was related ONLY to the treasure -- removing a coin from the box caused the person to be cursed or "undead".... Jack took a coin on purpose so he couldn't be killed while fighting against Barbossa; and later you see him slice his own hand with the coin in it and toss it to Will who does the same and drops both coins into the box - which ended the curse (blood repaid).

I've seen the movie 3 times and love that everything fits neatly together by the end of the movie!

Perfectly said April76!!!!

I had missed Jack cutting his own hand before tossing the coin to Will, but you are sooooo right. That's exactly what happened - both coins returned, along with the blood of each.

I think I actually enjoyed the movie better the second time - answered a lot of my questions. I'm seeing a third viewing in my future. ;)

DD read the Junior Novelization to DS before we went to see the movie. In it, Barbosa is quoted as saying "The first thing I'll do after the curse if lifted is eat a bushel of apples"

HTH.

I think there were two points to the apple.

One I think was, indeed, an "in joke" for Snow White. Just something Disney fans could laugh at, just like the hidden Mickeys (there are several -- I've seen 2/4 -- there are 2 different areas, but one is shown 3 times).

The second meaning is what's already been explained about how Barbossa's favorite food was an apple, and how he misses eating an apple so much. And Jack, knowing Barbossa loved apples, ate one in front of him specifically to rub in his face the fact that Jack wasn't cursed (at that time) and could enjoy the apple that Barbossa so wanted.

And Jack didn't become cursed until he took the treasure from the chest. That's part of the curse -- whoever takes a coin from the chest will be cursed. But only from the chest -- note that Will and Elisabeth weren't cursed even when they were holding the coins.

The apple does have a reference to Snow White, and I agree with the posters that Barbossa relishes the idea of actually tasting an apple - enough that he was carrying one around with him in anticipation of the curse being lifted and finally being able to taste again.

I can't WAIT to read these responses to my husband and kids tonight. It will make a few things so much clearer!!!

Once again, you guys are the BEST!

...and thanks to those of you who PM'd me with the "secret" of the end credits.

NOW, I'll have to get it when it comes out on DVD so that I can watch it over and over and find those dang hidden Mickeys.;)

Thanks for all of you pointing out my misconception about the apple. I totally forgot seeing Jack cut his hand but, yep, I do remember seeing him do it. Man, can't wait for the DVD!!!

Hidden Mickeys? Where?

I knew what the apple meant, I was not sure why Jack cut his hand before he threw the sword to Will.
Thanks for the explanation.

I saw it twice, informed my DH we are buying it on DVD as soon as it is available, and we just bought the soundtrack!
I am loving it! Especially the photo of Capt. Jack!
