Just rode down Biloxi Beach..

You should also take a look at the wlox tv13 site and check out the videos from Perlinton and Waveland.....I have been down there :sad2: :sad2:

I keep wondering what the plans are for these areas. Does anyone know if the casinos plan to rebuild? The economy needs to get moving again I guess and then rebuilding will pick up.

I don't even want to think about the historic places and landmarks not to mention people's homes. :(

Thanks for the post and the link. I forwarded it on to my parents.

My dad is from Biloxi and both of his parents are buried in a cemetery along Hwy 90. We were supposed to stop by there on our way home from Orlando, but due to a new job, it's going to be too difficult to extend our trip to do so.

Do you by any chance know what cemetery I'm referring to?

There is no perpetual care, and my father is pretty concerned about how it faired. Apparently, Camille was very hard on the same cemetery.

He hasn't been able to check on it himself, due to health issues he's dealt with since Katrina and any information would be appreciated.

Gosh, I haven't been since I was 13. I'd have to ask my parents. All I know is that it's across from the beach. That probably isn't much help.

BTW, are you a firefighter in Biloxi? My Grandfather used to be on the department there. As you can see, I'm married to one here in Houston.

If you posted the location & your question in a new thread, you might get some responses from locals who could check for you.

The problem is I don't know the exact location yet. Through a PM I had someone respond with what I thought was it, but that ended up being the Veteren's Cemetery where my aunt is buried.

I literally just found out that my grandparents are buried in Biloxi Cemetery, but I don't have the address.

I'll post a seperate thread asking for help. Thanks for the suggestion.

Southern Memorial and Biloxi are the two cemeteries that I need info on. Are you familiar with them?

I am only know about some headstone damage....I do not know how bad yet but I will be back down there this week....I will try to get some picks.

I just found this cemetery on a website: http://www.kimshockey.com/cem/oldbiloxi.html , here it's called "Old Biloxi Cemetery. This sounds like the cemetery your dad wants to know about. According to this website
"Located in Biloxi from Hwy 90 to the railroad tracks. Marked on many maps as "Old French Cemetery". Section nearest Hwy 90 is the oldest section. Email the site's owner(address is on the site), she might have more info for you or be able to point you in the right direction.

This website (http://www.gravestonearchives.net/cemquery.php?q=11) states...
"Located between Irish Hill Drive and Highway 90 in Biloxi. Both sides of railroad tracks.
Notes: Name is Biloxi City Cemetery, but is called Old Biloxi Cemetery."

Oh! Just found this article at WLOX.Com:
http://www.wlox.com/Global/story.asp?S=4552982&nav=6DJI
"Florida Man Helps Restore And Preserve Biloxi Cemetery"

Hope that all helps,
agnes!
PS - Let me know if there's anything else I can do.

ETA: There is a video clip of the WLOX news report on its website about this effort. They did take some footage of the individual graves. You might be able to spot your grandparent's gravesites - be prepared though. If you haven't seen the damage to the cemetery yourself, it will probably be upsetting :guilty: .

Agnes, thank you so much! I've been terribly busy today getting ready to leave and that was so nice of you to look that up for me.

I watched it and yes, it is bad. I called my mom to tell her about what you found and she said that the one you found, is indeed the cemetery where they're buried.

She's going to watch the video before she shows it to my dad.

Again - thanks bunches!

ETA: My mother wants me to thank those that have helped me as well. :)

My parents are dog-sitting for me while we're in Disney and when we get back, they're going to head to Biloxi, so don't go to any special trouble.

I'm just grateful this thread got posted, so that I could get all of this information from you guys!

I do appreciate the offer though!

I was wondering if there were any updates.
Chuck, have you been able to take any pics of the Cemetery?
AITW, please update this thread when your parents are able to find out any information. It just broke my heart when i saw that TV news video.

Thanks,
agnes!

We drive down highway 90 from Pass Christian as far as highway 49 in Gulfport and I guess I still find myself in shock sometimes just looking at everything that is gone. :sad2:

If you need me to drive by a certain cemetary I would gladly do it for you. Just let me know. I live in the area.

We're back from our trip and on the way down, we took Hwy 90 thru Gulfport, down to Biloxi. All I can say, is "wow". It was hard to drive with your mouth hanging open.

The devastation is total is some areas on the beach. It's hard to wrap your brain around it. Ironically, the only thing left to what looked to be unscathed, was Biloxi's shopping mall.

I did find my grandparent's cemetery and the really old (graves and crypts from the 1800's) closest to the beach were destroyed for the most part. It was so hard to see. About a half a block in, the graves were okay, including my grandparent's.

There were two men, who may have been the same men Agnes posted the link for, taking notes around the older graves. It almost looked like they were doing some sort of inventory.

My parents are leaving on Monday and are having to stay in Mobile, just to find a room. I worry how it's going to affect my father seeing some of the things we saw. It's that bad.

Here are two images we took. I'm not sure what the first one is, but the second one was a Baptist Church.

So glad to know your grandparents' graves were spared amongst the chaos.

I think that first pic you posted is (was) a VA hospital or a naval hospital.
