Just returned this afternoon from our annual Holiday trip to Disney. We had a great time. Our first two nights were spent at the Animal Kingdom Lodge Conceriege - We loved it! Great room and lots of animals..amazing! We signed up for the sunrise safari and that was the highlight of our trip. Very informative and we saw so many animals..up close and personal! The buffet Breakfast at the tusker house after the safari was also excellent. We were given fast passes to return to the safari attraction, but gave them to another couple, as we just didn't feel anything could top our early morning experience.

We checked into the VWL on Sunday. Pixie dust was flying as our room was ready at 10:30 AM!! We were on the first floor, 1533..right off the lobby/iron spike room. Our home resorts are OKW and BWV .. Our first stay at VWL and we really enjoyed it. The Villa was neat and tidy. Surpirsed it still had a VCR instead of a DVD player?? The lobby area of the DVC building is so beautiful and cozy. Wonderful tree, fire place and lots of great chairs, rockers, nooks and crannies to sit and talk, read a book, etc. A very warm and inviting space. Of course, the Wilderness Lodge lobby is eye popping dung the holidays. We've always enjoyed visiting this resort during the holidays. We had 2 terrific dinners at Artist Pointe. Also enjoyed lunch at Whispering Canyon Cafe, but have to say the breakfast we had there this morning was a bit disappointing.

We attended the Merry Member Mixer (I think that's the name) on Tuesday. (Held weekly during December every Tuesday) It was very nice!! Victorian carolers, string quartet, disney characters .. along with disney photographers, cookies, hot cider and ice water were in abundance. Location - International Gateway - Epcot. As we exited the event we were given a very nice silver key chain with Disney Vacation Club engraved. It was a nice way to spend a hour. The open house event ran from 3-5 PM. this is the first event we've attended since joining in '97, and we really enjoyed ourselves.

We toured Saratoga Springs one afternoon. Didn't realize we were suppose to go after 5, (the leave the units open between 5-7 PM daily for members) but the sales reps let us in and let us wander around. The units are quite attractive. Very nice furnishings (a bit formal?) and colors. The 3 bedroom unit was very nice. We were a bit taken aback for the open hall ways..We asked a sale rep why they had been built that way and we were told it was a cost cutting measure to keep dues under control. ie..open hall ways mean no air conditioning or heating necessary. We notice our voices echoed in the hallway. Question for those who have stayed there...can you hear people walking/talking in the halls inside the units? The views were very nice. This resort is going to be huge... Wish DVC would change the room styles. Everything is so cookie cutter from BWV to SS .. with OKW being the only exception. (excluding vero and HH..which do have different layouts) Noticed they still kept the multitude of doors in the bathroom area. We really love OKW, so don't think we will be staying here any time soon, but it is a very nice resort.

My one concern with SS is the size of the resort and the impact that it will have on the rest of the DVC resorts. We really love OKW and BWV..and also enjoy our ability to use the 7 month window to try different resorts. Once SS is fully developed, it's going to make the 7 month window reservations very difficult to obtain. For those of us prior to SS, reserving our units between 11-7 months is going to become very important. If we want until after the 7 month mark there is a very good chance we won't be able to get into our own resorts as it's only natural that SS members are going to want to try out other resorts too. Makes me think about the resale market and if we should add on some more points at the resorts we really want to stay at.

Back to VWL .. We were amazed how sound proof these rooms were. We didn't hear a peep from anyone above or next to us. A very peaceful setting.

We had a car and never used the bus transportation so can't comment on service, etc. Our only mistake was taking the boat transportation the night we attended MVMCP...Long lines and waits for the boat to the MK and the return trip home was just as bad. We should have driven to Ticket and Transportation and took the ferry over...

We really enjoy Disney during the holidays. Crowds the first weekend were huge...but by Modnay crowds had dropped considerably. MVMCP was a Zoo 12/12 .. Even the second parade was crowded!!

Sad to leave this morning, but so much to do before next weekend...Christmas is coming!!

Happy Holidays!!

Peggy Sue,

Thanks for the trip report. I enjoyed reading it. We'll be at the AKL in a little under a month for the first time! Also I had been wondering what those Merry Mixers were like. They sound like they're worth a try and we're hoping to be back Dec 2005.

Have a Merry Christmas.

Thanks for the report. I agree with your thoughts on the 7 month reservation window being more important than ever once SSR gets built out. I think there will be lots of day by day calling at the 7 month mark in the future.

I enjoyed reading your great trip report. Thank you for posting it! Sounds like you had a great vacation.

Glad that you had a great trip and that you liked the VWL. We went to the MMM on 12/7 and had a nice time also. Received the same gift walking out.

The three doors in the bathroom are to enable any guests staying in the LR to use the master bath without having to walk thru the master bedroom and to allow the master bedroom people to use their sink/jacuzzi area even if the other area is in use. What I wish they would do is make the door between the shower area and the jacuzzi area a pocket door so you don't have it in the way when open.

I'm not sure I totally agree with the 7 month potential problem. I can see where things would increase, surely, but I'm not worried about it. My theory is that a lot of SSR owners would have to be unhappy with staying at SSR AND be always planning in advance for trips for this to happen. Thinking that people "buy where they want to stay" or even that people like to stay best where they bought (psychological stuff.......) then there will be a good percentage that are happy staying there. I remember discussing similar issues with BCV when it opened and so far, I haven't heard of volumes of issues. Case in point, someone at work just got a 2br in March for BCV last week. JMHO. Who knows what will happen.

Thanks for the great trip report! I agree that the size of SSR is going to be an issue for booking specifically before the 7 month window.

Thanks for the great review! Artist Point is one of our favorite restaurants, and we hope to stay at AKL at some point in the future. Sounds like you had a great trip.
We stayed at SSR in November and found the rooms to be quite soundproof, never noticed any noise from the hallways. We really enjoyed our stay at SSR.
I too agree that as SSR gets closer to sold out, booking after the seven month window my become more difficult. Particularly at the smaller resorts, BCV and VWL. (We booked our SSR trip six months out, SSR and OKW were the only two resorts available.)

Peggy Sue,

I don't have my Merry Mixer postcard in front of me and I have a few of questions.

Are there things for kids to do at the Merry Mixer and do you need admission to Epcot or was the mixer outside the park at the International Gateway?

Also, do you think it would be worth a 3 hour round trip to attend? I'd be coming from Tampa.

Thanks.

Good report! Thanks for sharing! We were at the BCV this week but visited VWL. Our DS and his girlfriend, who are both outdoorsy types, really liked VWL! Of course, Whispering Canyon Cafe is one of our DS's favorite restaurants.

We were at the 12/14 Merry Mixer and thought it was a very nice get together for DVC members. We didn't have much time to visit with other DVC members as we went on to MVMCP.

It sure did get cold this week, didn't it?

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. We did indeed have a great vacation!

Dukestreetking - The member merry mixer is held outside of the gates to the international gateway. you do not need park admission. I don't recall seeing any organized activities for kids. Characters were there, along with an organized line to wait in and get a professional picture taken with the characters. while we were there we saw chip and dale and mickey and minnie...dressed in their holiday best. I did see kids getting autographs after they had their pictures taken.

Although we enjoyed this event, I don't think I would drive up from Tampa just for the event. It was an "open house" .. a place to stop by for some hot cider a cookie, see a character and say hello to other members. We spent an hour there...but we had arranged to meet friends there. If we hadn't been meeting people, I don't think we would have stayed more than a half hour or so. There were plenty of DVC folks milling about to answer questions etc. However, if you plan to drive to disney to shop at Down town disney or play a round of miniture golf, or some other activity, I certainly think it's worth setting aside an hour to attend this event. Hope this helps!!

WOW!
Our vacations almost mirrored each others.
We also stayed at AKL (for one night), prior to checking in to VWL on Sunday. (Although your stay at AKL was much more magical than ours)
We were in room 5533 at VWL, and absolutely loved the location and view.
We also attended the Member Mixer on Tuesday (but sadly, didn't win the basket).
And we also toured Saratoga Springs and thought the halls were kind of noisy. But other than that, we loved the resort. I didn't think I would like it at all, but actually fell in love with it. It is going to be stunning when it is completely finished. (Oh nooo...does this mean another contract in the future??)
With so many things in common this trip I'm sorry we didn't meet....or maybe we did, but we don't know it!

We also attended that Merry Member Mixer. It was enjoyable (we only had to walk from BWV) but probably wouldn't drive from Tampa either. We thought it was a nice touch by DVC and the keychains are classy. I think we ended up staying about 20 minutes.
