We had the extended family on the regular dining plan (1 table, 1 counter, 1 snack). Our first visit to Disney
We started with a Princess breakfast at Norway. There was a cold buffet that served various fruit (mixed fruit, blueberries, strawberries, etc.), muffins, bagels, and breakfast pastries. There was a section with salmon (sliced thin, chilled) and a type of chilled fish. The main breakfast was family style - scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and a cheesy hashbrown mix. The princesses were fabulous - the meal was good - above average for a buffet. 9 out of 10 for food. 10 out of 10 for princesses. Extra marks for the 4 princesses who were too wonderful for words.
Truly magical
We returned that night to eat at Coral Reef. I was disappointed by this meal. The service started okay but ended badly. It took forever to get the dessert and bill. The food was okay - some meals better than others, the waiter seemed to want to be somewhere else. 6 or possibly 7 out of 10 rating for Coral Reef. The fish of the day was very good. The trout was okay. Extra points for the chocolate wave but overall it was a disappointing experience - mainly for the service and long waits.
We had breakfast (later in the week) at the Crystal Palace. Also very pleased with the meal and the characters. It took a little while to see all 4 characters but we were warned up front by our waitress that it could take an hour + to see them all. Good service. It's a pretty standard breakfast buffet. Only downside was they started to clear the food early to make room for the lunch. We felt a little rushed. Biscuits were cold in the middle. 8 out of 10 for breakfast. 10 out of 10 for characters.
Our group split for an evening. The larger group headed to O'hana and had a fabulous meal. It's a pre-set menu but everyone was pleasant and the food was very good. It started with coconut pineapple bread (excellent), then a mixed salad with a honey lime dressing (very nice). Then we had chicken wings and dumplings. Followed by a lo mien noodles and broccoli. The meat was presented on skewers - there was chicken, pork, and steak. 3 sauces - spicy, peanut, and sweet and sour. Dessert was a bread pudding and vanilla ice cream. Hubby loved the steak. Sauces and the dessert really made the meal. The kids had a great time with the entertainment and barely ate a thing until we sat them back down after the coconut broom races. 10 out of 10
The rest of our party went to Kona and didn't have the best experience. The meal started strong, the food was pretty good, and then their waitress fell off the face of the earth. We had a later reservation time at O'hana - we had left O'hana, shopped, and walked down to the beach and back before our other party at Kona was able to get the check. They gave it 7 out of 10.
Our final meal was at Olivia's where we were staying. It started well. The waitress was pleasant but it was crowded. The food wasn't bad. Hubby liked his meal. However, the place got more crowded and then we never saw our waitress again. We waited for the dessert until we couldn't stand it. One person stayed behind and asked for the desserts to go. 6 out of 10. Maybe breakfast or lunch would be better than the dinner hour.
Highlight snack was the dole whip and pineapple float.
Best experiences at Norway princess breakfast, Crystal Palace breakfast, and O'hana. Olivia's was okay - food was pretty good - but service was lacking. Coral Reef was a disappointment for me. Some folks liked the food, others didn't. The service was slow.
Best counter service was Wolfgang Puck Express- the salmon was very good. Everyone liked their meals, cheesecake was excellent. The service was top notch. Only con is the location at Downtown Disney.
