We stayed 9 days at AKL, such a pretty resort. The lodge was busy during the week and packed on the weekend, to capacity I heard. The weather was warm most days, lots of swimming time. We were on the dining plan and found it to be a great deal for us, I have a 13yo son, lol, never wanted for food. We ate at Boma for breakfast and dinner. I loved it for the breakfast buffet but didn't care for the dinner, too unusual for me. I saw several men load up their plates with chicken strips and mac & cheese, funny. But those zebra domes, wow, they are pretty darn good. I love it that you can get them for dessert at the Mara. I found that the Mara food court to be very liberal with the dining plan, any combination of foods were considered a meal. The snack part of the plan is great too, we had many mid afternoon Mickey ice cream bars (yum!!).
The parks were fairly crowded during the week but there were no major waits for rides except Soarin'. Most rides were just walk on. Over the weekend AK was packed, packed, with CM's and family and friends taking their first ride on EE and getting their free sunshade gift, they were everywhere! Another huge draw was Tarzan Rocks final show on the 21st, the line had to be three blocks long.
I am a Crocs fan, that's all I wear and took three pair with me. After reading so much about them on these boards, I was expecting to see them everywhere at the parks but I didn't. I saw very few people with them, just a few kids. I had a few CM's comment on them, ask if they were comfortable, funny.
Our dining choices were Crystal Palace, Liberty Tree Tavern, Boma, Chef Mickey's, Cosmic Ray's, Alfredo's, Pinocchio Haus, ABC Commissary, Flame Tree, Donald's Restaurantosarus breakfast, & Rainforest Cafe. All the food was good except for Alfredo's, had an odd experience with the waiters. After hearing we were on the dining plan, they acted like we were second class or something, ran into my DH with a tray, neglected our silverware, then argued very loudly in the corner in Italian. I thought they were going to have a fistfight! It was not a good meal.
We had a great time, took many pictures (over 300), tried some new things (Boma, Chef Mickey's) have some new favorites (Crush's Turtle Talk, Soarin'), just had a nice long visit, took time to enjoy the parks and our resort more.
I love to talk WDW, if anyone has any questions,
Lori

Nice report - what was it you didn't like about Boma? I have a ressie for there in April - I am excited to try the zebra domes - what are they like... I know what you mean about you 13 yr old DS - mine turns 13 tomorrow - boy that boy can eat - and is as thin as a rail......lol

I love the atmosphere of Boma, the smells, the lighting, the waitstaff, all great. It was the food on the dinner buffet I didn't care for. The prime rib was good but all the other foods had odd spices on them, perhaps curry, roasted red potatoes looked good but tasted ickky. The watermelon rind salad looked ok but was very strange tasting, cous cous looked like I would like it but there again, had all those African spices in it. Some of the foods I had never heard of but I tried them, pap with sauce, hummus with flatbread, a few of the things were quite spicy-hot. I really didn't like anything in the main buffet. Not so with the dessert end, lol! I found everything there quite wonderful. Zebra domes are two bites of light, creamy smooth cake and coffee heaven, not like anything I have ever had before and hard to describe. You can buy them in the refrigerated case in the food court, for a preview of sorts, lol. I had about five previews.
I was very open minded about Boma after hearing so many wonderful reviews but it's not for me except for breakfast. I say keep your reservations, just to try it, the service is quite wonderful.

Thanks for your post! I'm thinking of staying at AKL when DD and I return. I'm really torn between the convenience of the Poly (and I like the kitchy Hawaiian theme) and the coolness of AKL...I also love Jiko and Boma.
I've heard that you can get night vision goggles to see the animals on the savannah at night...it'll be a hard choice! Glad you had a good time.

thank you so much for your reviews of everything.......sounds like you had a great time and plenty to eat too......
Thanks again
