Who here is not going to use the pool and what are you going to do instead?

I'm not going to be using the pool. Its not that I'm ashamed of my body shape or anything but I can't swim and I have some nasty scars from the car accident on my leg that I really don't want to broadcast to the world. Short of wearing a full wet suit into the water (something that I really don't think is a good idea lol), I don't see how I'd be able to keep the scars from being seen (and receiving the resultant stares. Why don't people just ask when they see them instead of staring a hole through me? I don't even wear shorts anymore)

I don't use the pool because I don't like swimming. I got in last year because it was my DD and I. However, this year I am also taking my niece so she will be in the pool with DD. I plan on taking a book and just vegging out. If I didn't have DD I would probably never go to the pool.

I'm sorry to hear about your scars. I wish I could offer advice on your problem but only you know how you feel about your scars being seen in public so go with what makes you comfortable. Trust me, there is enough to do at WDW that you really won't miss the pool.

Just a suggestion for IF you may get in the water (It would be nice to cool off!), go to solumbra.com and check out their clothing. It is made for UV protection (skin cancer patients) but my MIL uses the clothing and it is a very light weight material so she swims in it. Long sleeve top, pants.

I think there are a few options as far as ozone-protective clothing/swimwear are concerned. I have bought some myself over the internet. I do believe I did a search for "sun protective clothing". The material is made to be worn in the water and dries quickly, plus offers very good protection from the sun. :)

I don't go in the pools anymore. First I don't like how I look in bathing suits and I always seem to have my .

If you put on a fake bandage that covers much of one of the scars I think that will reduce the staring.

Caution: I suspect that skin cancer is mor likely to occur when scars are exposed to the sun, since scars do not tan.

Hmm. Maybe I will just skip the pools completely. It just seems the easier option. Pity because I was looking forward to it before the accident.

I know just how U feel Totalia. I too have very nasty scars on my Leg from an accident. I had my leg litterally torn off at the knee. etc. I found out at this time I am allergic to the thread they use to sew people back up, also to the staples etc. I have also had a knee replacement (more scars) and a pin put in my ankle ( more scars). I also have a very bad limp. I also have bad paddle burns on my chest from the hospital. I look at it this way I am on vacation. I will never see these people again. I was taught not to stare, point, or in some cases actually just reach out and touch another person (yes people have done this). When kids do this I tell them this is what happens when U dont look before crossing a street. (I was hit by a very drunk driver who ran a stop light in a Cadillac. He admitted to hitting me at 55 mph.) I use it as a learning experience for the kids. When an adult does any of these things I usually give them that look you mother gave you when U were growing up that said " Where R your manners?" Yes I am a 48 year old mother of 10 almost all grown children. I was hit by the car when I was 24.

I also purchased a beach wrap at the world that I wear over my suit. Silly me thought I was covering my leg. I was unconcious of the fact that I tied the wrap so the slit was on the side with my bad leg. I noticed the more crowded the pool the less people looked about them, and we all look the same once we are in the water up to our waists. Also the pool water is great for taking the pressure off the leg. I also just sit on the stairs of the pool, or if my DH is there to help me in I go in the Hot tub. I dont swim that well.

Have a great trip. No matter about a pool. YOu are there to visit the Mouse :earseek:

Thank you fran. Thank you very much.

Believe it or not, I actually feel better now. :) Guess I just needed someone to say that to me.

Hey Totalia,

You will be visiting the mouse the same time I am. As I said before I will be the 48 yr old redhead with the leg issue, wearing my green ribbon. With the redheaded DS6 trying to drown himself. LOL

Have a great vacation. I hope you do go in the pool. Just dont wear one of those bathing suits that your butt will be hanging out of please. It is so embarassing to me when my DS6 shouts out " Hey look I can see her butt." :rotfl: I yell at him as he is so thin his pants are always falling down. I keep telling him to pull them up before everyone sees his butt.

I almost forgot. Wear sunscreen over the scar if you do go in the sun. It will help the scar heal better and will help it fade out a little faster over the years. I am not sure why but thats what the plastic surgeon told me. Kind of made sense as since a burn would also cause more scars.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving
safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in
sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used
up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!"

This is the motto I have lived by ever since I died on that road and they had to use the paddles to bring me back 16 times. ie the paddle scars.
