It was the most difficult decision I've made in ages! I am an avid reader and VERY picky about my books.

But, we are moving to Fl in 6 weeks and I had to get rid of my extensive book collection as our new place is way too small to house 1,000 books. DH suggested I get a kindle to make myself feel better. It's going to be my "Christmas present."

Now off to Amazon to compile my list of books to order! I did notice that lots of ebooks are now more expensive than the real thing (i.e. Stephen King's new book). Figures....

The way it has seemed to work for all the books I've looked into buying is that the new release costs more on the Kindle, but the Kindle price drops lower than the paperback when the paperback comes out.

I don't get why the ebooks are more then a paper copy of the book either. I have a NOOK on my Christmas list this year mainly because we just don't have space for any more books either and I want the ease of using a NOOK vs the regular books. I want the color version so I can read in bed without worrying about a nightlight or bedside lamp :thumbsup2.

I asked my DH for a kindle for christmas this year after moving this summer and having to get rid of about 500 books, this is two years after donating about 1,000 books!

Anyhoo, my stepmom had a kindle and loved it but my dad got her an i-pad so she gave me her old kindle!! It is the 2nd Gen one, but hey it was free, plus it came with about 150 - 200 free books!! Sadly my step mom and I don't have the same taste in books so I didn't keep all them but I did have the chance to read a few that I wouldn't normally read. I love my kindle and now my DH is going to get me an Amazon gift card so I can buy books, get a new cover, and I really want a night light.

Once I try it out I may get the light as well. I just spent an hour browsing throught the Amazon ebook list. There are lots of freebies that look interesting. I think I had worse empty nest syndrome when my books left than when my kids moved out!

This makes me feel better. I will start out with some older books I haven't read yet and work my way up from there.

I have the Kindle Wifi only (DF has the Wifi + 3g.) I love it! I'm not terribly picky about what I read and have at least 20 books, but think I only spent $15 so far! My new best friend is this site: http://inkmesh.com I check it daily to see if any new books have come out for free!

Is the book out on hardback or has it been mass-released on paperback? B/c if it comes out on hardback first it won't be mass-released until a different date. Some books are never released hardback, only mass-released paperback. But if it goes out hardback first than even the e-book will go out at pretty much hardback costs and lots of times you have to wait for the mass-paperback release before even the e-book cost goes down. If it's out on paperback then I don't know why it costs more. To my understanding the e-book price should have been dropped with paperback release.

Behind the scenes it costs just as much to publish an e-book as it does the hard copy b/c printing the book is actually the cheapest part of the publishing industry. The editors, typesetters, author's royalties, ect is where the bulk of the money goes to when you purchase a book.

Now, to my understanding, for the longest time Amazon ate the cost when they introduced the Kindle. They were making so much $$ off of selling the Kindle that they took a loss on the actual books. They were still having to pay the publishing houses the actual costs but were selling the books at cheaper prices in order to gain customers.

I ordered the Kindle 3G WiFi for DD12 for Christmas. It's the only thing she wanted and she is a bookworm! She gets in such a foul mood when she doesn't have a book to read and we can't get to the bookstore to buy a new one. (our local library sucks) I'm hoping the Kindle will solve that problem and if by chance she doesn't like it, well, then it's mine!;)

Just a clarification... that was a typo... I meant to type "drops lower" rather than "drop slower". :)

I am thinking about getting DH a Kindle for Christmas. He's not really into gadgets usually, but I got him an Ipod & a subscrition to Audible where I download him books to listen to last year & he loves it. He drives about 200-300 miles daily for work so he listens to them then. His sister got a Kindle last year & loves it. He loves to read but his time is short sometimes. I thought the Kindle might make it easier for him plus take up less space on our crowded book cases.

What made you choose Kindle over Nook? I am just beginning to think about an ereader for myself, but I'm cheap and will probably only go for the "free" books. I just can't see spending $$ on a book I'll only read one time and can't share (hence the reason I use the library so much). I do buy books on occassion, but my family & friends pass them around, so it makes sense.

Does the Kindle offer MORE freebies than Nook? Just curious as to why one over the other and what the deciding factor was?

I bought my parents Kindles sometime back and they love them but my dad says he still prefers real books. The reasons for various prices for the Kindle versions have to do a lot with the publishers pricing the books. Some authors are bit upset about the Kindle versions of their books being expensive.

E-readers are pretty handy if have space issues. I have a friend who is living overseas because he is in the Air Force and he has said that having e-reader is good thing for him because he lives in a small base apartment and he is re upping for another 4 years and he doesn't want to have a lot of things when moves again.
