We have done several Disney and several other cruise lines. We recently took a Royal cruise to Alaska (our 3rd time there). Here's a few quick observations/comparisons:

1. We originally booked Royal out of Seattle due to concerns that Canada might keep their ports closed, possibly leading to Disney cancelling their cruises out of Vancouver. If we were certain that Vancouver would stay open, we likely would have opted for Disney.
2. Royal's Quantum of the Seas is massive (holds 4,900 passengers). We thought the Disney ships were large, but the Disney Wonder seemed minuscule sitting next to Quantum.
3. We were told that there were 4,500 passengers on board, which was surprising to us since the ship, activities, shows, restaurants, lines, etc. never seemed very crowded. Even in our main dining room (1 of 4), there were always a good number of tables (at least 10) noticeably empty every night - except for the night they served lobster tails and the dining room was packed. However, lengthy waits for the elevators were common.
4. Embarking and disembarking was incredibly efficient, especially for such a huge ship, and seemingly faster than Disney.
5. Royal seems to have more preferred docking than Disney (e.g. in Juneau, Alaska, the Disney Wonder docks much farther away from downtown than Royal, which might be a problem when coming with granny and her wheelchair).
6. There were lots of activities for the kiddies (and adults) on the ship, including bumper cars, laser tag, pools, North Star, table hockey, etc., much more than the smaller Royal ships especially.
7. None of the shows was very kid friendly, catering mostly to the adult audience. We all missed the great productions on the Disney ships.
8. The kids clubs were very popular, but seemed understaffed. They showed movies, including Disney cartoons, to end the evenings.
9. The buffet food was surprisingly good and consistent, better than we remember on Disney.
10. The much-hyped Coastal Kitchen restaurant (for suite guests) seemed overrated. Surprisingly, they didn't offer some of the menu items offered in the main dining room (such as prime rib and the whole lobster option). It's was definitely more quiet and intimate, and half-empty the nights we dined there.
11. The ship had 4 main dining rooms, each themed differently, but all offering the same meals prepared by the same kitchen staff. We missed the dining rotation and the fun themes on Disney ships.
12. We loved the junior suites on Quantum for our families with a full bathroom and a separate toilet and sink, a large and comfortable bed, a drop down bunk bed that we're used to on Disney, and a sofa bed that can sleep 2 very comfortably. The room felt much more spacious than Disney's family verandah rooms and were significantly cheaper. However, there's no curtain separating the 2 sleeping areas.
13. Most staff were friendly and attentive, just like on Disney.
14. We paid for the fastest wifi, which was very strong in the main dining and common areas, but almost useless in our staterooms.
15. We definitely missed the familiar Disney songs throughout the ship.
16. Overall, Quantum and Alaska was a wonderful time enjoyed by our party.

Good to hear the ship didn't feel crazy crowded with all those people. I'm trying to convince my family to try a quick RCL cruise out of Florida. We don't qualify to sail under Disney's protocols but we could with RCL. So far, they're not wanting to switch; and my husband's main concern is the number of people and crowds on the larger ships.

I’ve sailed on Oasis and Freedom and they really don’t feel crowded. Royal is good at spreading the crowds out.

I love Royal. Diamond member on their cruise line. They use to have the dreamworks character and a few dreamwork related activities during their cruises for kids but that deal ended. Its been a little while since I've been on Royal though, I got a bit tired of the same old cruise and started switching up to different lines. Will definitely be trying the Wonder of the Seas though, since its a bit different. Love the review!

Several members of our party were hesitant to book with Royal since we all love Disney. However, after this cruise, they said they would start looking to book the large Royal ships more often.

Can I ask approx. price difference?
Our large junior suite costs about $5,600 for 4 persons. We priced the same itinerary on Disney at $7,700 for their deluxe stateroom with verandah (not their larger family stateroom with verandah, which is still smaller than our junior suite).

Yes, Dreamworks characters would really make their cruises even more appealing! Why didn't they keep the deal?

My guess is cost. Royal PR indicated that because they added things like laser tag and other kid friendly activities they didn't think it was necessary. But that just screams cost to me.

What we loved about RCL dinning is that their buffet is open for dinner. The variety of food is just amazing and you can go when you want, dressed how you want. It took us a few RCL sailings to realize this was available but once we did find out, we never looked back. It's a shame DCL doesn't offer this option.
We never found the Oasis class ships to be crowded either.

Great review! We got off the Wonder last week from Alaska and saw the Quantum in port with us for two of our three port days.

You were probably one of the friendly folks waving back to us at the port! So how was your experience?

Disney did offer this option before the pandemic shutdowns. Well, Cabanas had seated dining with servers, but it was still available for dinner on your time schedule. Once the staffing situation is resolved, I'm sure that Disney will bring back Cabanas for dinner. The website for Marceline Market on the Wish says that it will be used for dinner, too.

And Disney doesn't have a dress code in any of their restaurants, except for the added-cost adult-only restaurants (Palo, Remy, Enchante).

Royal's website says that the Junior Suite and Junior Suite with Large Balcony rooms on Quantum of the Seas have a single bathroom, but you show mentioned having two bathrooms. Did you book a different category?

:rotfl2:We totally did wave!!!
It was great, this was actually our third time to Alaska (all on Disney) and each cruise has been awesome. This was our first cruise back since the restart. We certainly did admire how sleek the Quantum looked for such a huge ship.

It was a surprise to us as well. We booked 2 of their regular Junior Suites and were very happy to see the split bathrooms with 2 toilets! I would assume this is the case for all junior suites on this ship? We also had one accessible junior suite with only one, but very large bathroom with double sinks, tub and separate shower (but only one toilet).

What a nice way to put it! Standing on the port and looking at the Quantum, the ship looks like a huge hotel. Our last trip to Alaska was also on the Wonder. Disney ships just look so nice! We also had a great time on the Wonder.

We loved our Disney cruise, but comparable Royal rooms usually run about 30-40% less so we have been sailing with them instead for the last 8 or so years. It feels like Royal's staff is not nearly as well-trained as Disney's, but it's nowhere near a 30-40% difference. I would love to see the Wish in person, though!
