I am reaching out to my fellow 'budget friends' and hoping no one thinks I'm nuts. In the last few months we have noticed that we need to replace our major appliances. They are each at least 15-20 years old and highly inefficient. So I have been doing research for quite a few months now to make sure we get the best deals as well as products that will last.
Massachusetts is having a 'tax free' weekend Sat/Sun of this week, so we've decided now will probably be the best time to buy. Here's what I found

Home Depot
Ge Profile SS French Door Fridge $1599
Ge Profile SS Dishwasher $799
Ge Profile SS Slide in Electric Range $1499
with the promotion home depot is having, plus the rebate GE is giving, plus a Lowe's coupon for 10% off, and a rebate from Nat'l Grid..after all is said and done, I will have spent a total of $2792.27

Is that alot for appliances? I have never purchased an appliance before. I have searched high and low at other stores and can't seem to find items I like for the same price range..I just can't decide if I should wait or not, maybe there will be better sales at a later date? I hate having to make decisions with it comes to such a high dollar amount.....

I appreciate any opinions or input...

This is moderately expensive for appliances -- it's not out-of-the-water crazy, but it's above average. If you can afford the price without sacrafice and will enjoy the features, go ahead and buy them. It sounds like you're getting the best price for what you want. I do not think you'll do better than tax-free and a 10% coupon and a rebate; it sounds like the planets are aligning for you.

You're going to have these things for a long time, so you should get what you want. Saving $200 and then spending ten years wishing you had ____ feature isn't a good value. On the other hand, spending an extra $200 on something you'll never use is wasted money.

Two more things:

Since you're getting a new range, do you not need a new hood as well?

You may be required to buy a little short extension cord to hook your appliances to the wall. I am 100% certain I had to do this with my washer/dryer. I cannot remember whether it was true for my range. If your stuff doesn't come with a cord, it'll run $20 or $30.

We try to buy any new appliance at a Sears Outlet store. Do you have any near you? They have the new appliances that were delivered but for some reason the buyer rejected them. Our dishwasher has a "dent" on the door. But we can't find it. It was almost 1/2 off the original price (and it is stainless steel inside and out).

The only problem with this method is that there is no guarantee what you are looking for this weekend will be there. So the appliances you researched might not be available so this might not be the best option for you.

As the previous poster said - buy the appliances with the features you want - you will have them for awhile! :)

I agree with the Sears Outlet- or other local *scratch and dent* store. We just purchased a new SS refrigerator perfect for our needs with automatic ice maker- side by side- exactly the type we wanted- for 50% the MSRP. It is still available for purchase online at several stores for about $1600 and we paid only $1100 total. It was brand new and has the same warranty as the same model purchased from a regular Sears. It is a Maytag Elite and has good reviews as well. It has a slight dent on the side but you can't see it as the sides are covered anyway by the kitchen cabinet/wall.

Saving a quick $500 is a great feeling if you can find something that fits your needs on the floor. If you have one locally it's definitely worth your time to take a look. :thumbsup2

I got my refrig at Lowes sort of the same way. They have their own scratch and dent section which sometimes includes non dented or scratched items. I saved $600 at the time and still don't know what was 'wrong' !!! Refrig is working fine for almost 5 years now.

I got stainless look side by side fridge, dishwasher, over range microwave, and slide in smooth top range for 1600$ out the door while I'm certain they are not anywhere near as fancy as yours for an extra 200$ they could have all had a 5 year warranty if worried about brake age. But we will only be living in this house for 2 more years tops so spending lots on appliances didn't make sence also I love the stainless look more than stainless steel,

I just looked at the mass save website and there is still almost $300,000 left in reserve for the additional $150 cash for clunkers that started in late July. You can have the store apply for you as you make your purchase. Good Luck!

Make sure you read reviews on-line before buying - especially the dishwasher.

That price is good for SS and having them all match. You can get cheaper at places people have already mentioned but mostly likely will not find matching brands/models.

I don't know the exact specifications for your products but you might check this website: number1direct.com They have great prices on appliances and have free shipping. Should also allow you to claim a GE rebate if it's still available.

Are you including all the installation fees, delivery fees, and prices for parts you may need for installation? This will add several hundred dollars to the total.

The price for the dishwasher is high. You can get an excellent SS dishwasher for several hundred dollars less. I suggest that you thoroughly investigate reviews before purchasing (Consumer Reports, online reviews, etc.)

I don't think that's a bad price for GE Profiles. I have the stove (at least a Profile slide-in stove) and I LOVE it. I have a less expensive (not a Profile) GE dishwasher and it's "eh." I don't match, since I was looking for the best price, and have a Maytag fridge. (I also have the Profile over the stove microwave and love it as well.)

So if you want the matching appliances I think that's a decent price for GE Profiles. I mean, you're saving 30% plus sales tax. I'd do it in a heartbeat!

Whatever appliances you choose to buy, and where ever you end up buying them, be sure to ask for a discount from the salesperson. If you buy multiple appliances you can often ask for and get a discount for the 'bulk' purchase.

I agree with a PP that Sears outlet is a good place to get appliances. Got my front load Samsung 4.5cf washer there and saved $300. We got it 2 years ago and would use them again for a major appliance purchase.

Do you have a Menards home improvement store near you? They have a good deal of appliances too.
