I was reading this article online:

http://www.neatorama.com/2008/11/21/10-cool-secrets-about-disneyland/

However, I do have 1 gripe about what I read. If Coke is giving Disney Corp their beverages for FREE then how come they charge us so much? :confused3

Even at $1.50 or $1.75 per drink they'd still be making a ton of money. I already knew Disney was a cash cow but man, I'm a little annoyed that they get something for free and are charging us so much for it.

Still won't prevent me from going but geesh.

Well, you have to factor in some small cost of storage and cooling, and the cost is probably used elsewhere...like, we pay zero for soda, that savings goes to refurbish ride xyz. I know that is plain and simple terms, and it's some complicated fianancial strategy widespread over many parts of an overall budget, I was just going for an example.

But the bottom line is they charge it because they know people will pay for it. It's just good business practice. If you knew someone would pay x amount, you charge x amount. I don't think lots of people know about the free cups of ice water thing, alot of visitors might think it's pricey, but when you're thirsty, you just do it.

Maybe that savings goes to pay for the replacements of all the popped balloons they give for free :rotfl:

Coke gets free advertising, Disney gets free coke, WE pay and get FREE refills at the resorts with the mug...companies make $$$, we pay, its what makes the world go round.......:rotfl2:

You both are right. But I still think it's funny that we're charged so much. I don't disagree that Disney is Disney and it's expensive. Yes, I'm willing to pay for it because I enjoy it. I just didn't realize that Coke provides their products to Disney for free. I do wish it were a little cheaper considering you can go buy the Coke bottle at a gas station for $1.29 where you get charged more than double at Disney. It's just the way the world goes round.

Its not just Disney that gets the fountain soda supplies free or nearly free.
Most everywhere does. Back when I worked at 7-Eleven it was the same deal: the soda distributor signs a contract with the store, restaurant, amusement park, movie theater, etc to provide the soda syrup, the equipment and the bubbly water to mix the syrup into soda for LOW price. The store/restaurant/venue then purchases the cups either with the soda company logo or their own store logo on them. Then venue charges whatever they want. The actual cost of the beverage is mere pennies, yet they charge you a lot ($5 at the movies!) because beverages and food are a HUGE profit center for them (I've heard that the movie theater only makes like 25 cents of the ticket price, all the rest of their profits come from concessions like soda and popcorn).

They know that people are willing to pay it, thats why they can get away charging so much.

Ok the article is speaking about Disneyland not Disney World. Maybe it is different in both parks. But i think it is a "you scratch my back and i''ll scratch yours", they also are in business with www.mycokerewards.com you can enter to win free trips with your point's, no luck yet but i will keep trying and besides i prefer coke over pepsi so i am happy about the arrangement.

The actual cost of a beverage has never been the actual beverage it's the container. You're paying for the cup. Even then it's still a huge money maker for the seller. That's why places like to sell you refilables. They make a chunk off of the actual refilable cup (which half the time you're going break lose or wear out) and you're relilling it off something they pay less than pennies for, or in the case of WDW nothing.
