Just joined yesterday - now I'm not sure

I think what you are struggling with is that this is a want, not a need. Ask yourself if you have the disposable income to buy it in the first place? If all of your family needs are met, and you have the money, then decide if this is the want that you can give yourself?

I decided that it sounded like a good idea when I went yesterday but I looked on another site and it was pretty negative and my mom thinks it was a bad idea.

Ok everyone's telling you to just cancel now...but no one knows what exactly you're hearing that is negative? What are you hearing? What about those things are getting to you?

I'm quite sure that no one in my family (including the people that are going to get a free four night stay b/c of it) would think that our buying DVC is a good idea, but yowza, it's our money. So that seems the least important part (though IF your mom is a good person to owe money to, I'd take her up on her offer!). The important part is WHAT are you hearing and WHY is it bugging you?

Should have been the first thing asked here, IMO!

I believe DVC is a great deal if you plan to visit the resorts every year. No timeshare is a good deal for a trade. Point prices only go up. The resale market makes DVC more affordable. This purchase should make you happy. if not, cancel.

We can help you decide if DVC is a good fit for you if you can answer thesse questions for us:

1. Why did you want to buy DVC? What, specifically, were you hoping to get out of it?

2. What did you read that was negative, that made you feel like you shouldn't buy?

DVC isn't a good fit for everyone, and if you're having serious second thoughts, it's not a good time for you to buy. I think it'll help you make the decision if you can focus in on the specifics of what you're looking for.

You have 10 days to decide and I would take a couple of days to really look at DVC. You need to understand that especially on internet boards you have to be able to filter responses and posts. There are some people out there that will complain just to complain. There are people that may have bought a long time ago and have seen DVC change over the years, causing them to dislike it. There are new purchasers that might have blinders on and can't say anything bad about it.

I think DVC can be a great thing for you and you could really enjoy it. If the reason you are buying is to go to WDW and stay on site, you will be probably really enjoy your purchase. If you think it is a status symbol or you will be some kind of special treatment you are buying for the wrong reasons. If you are buying to travel the world, DVC probably isn't the best purchase either, but opportunities do exist to travel outside of WDW so using these infrequently is a benefit.

I agree with the chorus. Rescind now. Do some research over the next month or two. Learn how the program works, and think hard about whether or not it could work for you. When you've done that, if you still think it is a good fit for you, call your guide back (or call a resale broker). An extra few weeks of investigation will either convince you that this isn't right for you, or it will give you the confidence to know that DVC is a good fit.

I really appreciate all the replies and advice on this. I am going to go ahead and cancel it for now and continue to research it. For me, I was planning on us using it to go to Disney World every year to every other year, and maybe Disneyland some day. It wasn't so much being able to go other places, although maybe that would be nice at some point. My main draw to it was because we love love love going to Disney. I also loved the idea of my kids and eventually their kids being able to enjoy Disney vacations. Right now with the financing rate as it is and me not being able to pay it off immediately (although it would take closer to 2 years than 5 or 10 for me) I just think I need to think about it and wait, or maybe borrow at a better rate. I honestly have no doubt I would love DVC, I just think that right now is probably not the best time for me - I always hate when my Disney vacations end and I don't know when I'll be going back, maybe that played into my decision too.

You've made a wise decision, Lizzybee. Take your time and research it. If you change your mind, you can always buy in again. Good luck.

Well, if you were unhappy with financing it, then it's wise to rescind. It didn't bother us, and we're happy that they make it SO easy to pay extra principal almost whenever we want to (if you have a payment pending, you can't click the button to pay more). But if it bugs you...

But using it every other year for WDW and sometimes for DLR...those are great reasons to own DVC!

Agreed you made the right decision, it took us 4 years to decide after having our 1st dvc tour. My DH was pretty much sold in 2006 but I was very leary. We just bought in Feb and then did an add-on resale and to be honest if I had done more research from the beginning I would have done things differently. With that being said after 15 years and counting of yearly trips to Disney we keep going back, so I do feel I made a great decision and the timing was right. It felt great to have my 17 year old DD use 7 nights at BWV last week with 3 friends and listening to them talk about how they had the time of there lives!

My Mom doesn't understand our love of Disney, much less buying a timeshare. :confused3 We have very different vacation "likes and dislikes". Mom thinks a room is "just a place to sleep". But, I love sitting on my balcony, sipping a cocktail/or coffee and people watching on the Boardwalk.:cool1:

If you are unsure, you did the right thing. Take the time to compare the resorts and choose the one you like the most. We chose to buy BWV via resale and saved thousands of $$$$. We also visit WDW at least once a year and wish we'd bought earlier. I have grown children and grandchildren, so there's never a shortage of folks wanting to vacation at Disney.:mickeyjum

Most states have A Right To Cancel about 3 to 10 days to chage your mind and of course to return your deposit.. I always say go with your gut.

Well, I just sent my fax to cancel the contract and I wanna cry :( I still think it's the right choice for now.

you can always buy. Never by retail. Buy resale. Way better value.
You knew in the pit of your stomach it wasn't the right time. Better safe than sorry.

My wife and I went to the DVC presentation during our last visit to WDW and were not totally convinced, but our guide told us that it was very easy to cancel within the 10 days if we changed our minds, so we went ahead and did it even though I hadn't done any research yet.

Within a day of getting back from our vacation, I did some research and decided that BLT was not the best home resort for us, that the use year we'd gotten was not ideal for our typical vacation schedule, and that we could get our favorite resort much cheaper by resale than buying direct.

So we cancelled and bought resale. The resale process was very painless (through TTS), and we saved a bundle. We saved enough that we were able to buy without doing any financing.

Don't fret--do some research, then decide what's best for you. Even without the typical pressure that timeshare salespeople can exert, if you love Disney, you can still put a lot of pressure on yourself to buy in at the presentation. It's very common. Better to take a breath and do some research first. If after some research and careful consideration you think it will work for you, then buy in, ideally via resale.

We are new to DVC. We came close several other times but were never able to follow through, it just wasn't the right time. When we finally purchased in June it felt right and we were confident we had made the right decision. I give you a lot of credit for thinking it through and knowing that it wasn't the right time for DVC at this moment. It is a lot of money and decisions on spending that much should be made without any regret. You love Disney so you know you will be back :goodvibes, just not the exact date. If you have extra cash maybe you could start a DVC fund and put money aside monthly and when you do decide to buy you could have good size down payment. If nothing else I agree with the other posters do your research, ask lots of questions here on this board (there are amazing people here) and when the time is right you will know it. :thumbsup2. Good luck.

Good luck .. with your choice i been a member for 10+ yrs.. Things have changed some... some good some bad

Here is my lesson on buying into DVC.

We had a chance to take the tour when the original DVC (OKW) was opening, and my Mom, who was with us, hated the idea of a timeshare, no matter where. So we never took the tour, even a couple years later, we still did not take the tour.

Years later, we took Mom and Niece on a trip to Disney again and stayed on the International Drive strip, my treat of course. Mom's reply at the hotel we were staying at: "Is this the best you could do ?".
It was like a 4000 dollar trip in today's economy, paying for tickets, plane, meals, and Hotel.

Mom had no idea how nice the DVC timeshare was, neither did I, and I lost a great opportunity on getting in at the ground floor prices, free passes, and all that. Mom never had a chance to go to Disney again, and she would have been begging to go more than any other family relative.

Years later I got to stay at a OKW 2 bedroom with points my boss had left over and sold like at 5 dollars a point. I didn't know then what a GIFT he was giving me to stay there at that price. My immediate family fell in love with OKW, and got lost the first two days trying to remember where different rooms were. We felt like VIP.

Some other people also were negative about me buying into DVC while there were so many offsite Disney Timeshares with way cheaper maintenance fees.

But once I took family and friends to ONSITE DVC, nothing else was good for them, and they didn't want to ever go OFFSITE or stay in a value or moderate Disney ever again. It did spoil them, they wanted DVC only !

My own personal lesson: I never should have listened to Mom about DVC !
I would have had 10 extra happier years with DVC, paid less in the end, and had some nice perks along the way. Mom would have approved in the end.

However I do agree with everyone else, if you feel financially unsure, don't do it until you feel comfortable. I was very comfortable with my finances when I purchased DVC and chose to get it interest free by paying it off within one year.

I agree with your Mom, I would not like to pay any high interest rates on obtaining a DVC contract.

Good luck on your decision, take your time too.

I got a couple of follow up calls today in response to my faxed cancellation. The first was a woman, she may have been the person who came in and talked to me after the sales guy. She was very nice and really understood. She could tell, I really love Disney and want to come back often. The sales guy called and he was umm less friendly, not rude but just said "well you know prices are only going to keep going up but it's your money anyway, I don't want to beat you up over your decision but I just wanted to follow up.. bye" Oh well. I do think if I buy in the future it might be a re-sale or with a different sales person.

Now you have plenty of time to read up on DVC and find out everything there is to know. Good luck on your decision.
