I just read a review about bedbugs at Portofino Bay Hotel on TripAdvisor. Since we'll be staying at the Royal Pacific Resort in December, and since bedbugs are on the increase all over the US, I decided to look up what to do if we happen to run into them. Here's a couple of important points to remember...
1. Check bedding before you settle in for the night - peel back the covers and check around the seams of the mattress. Look for little specks of "dirt" in the folds of the fabric.
2. Place clothing up off the floor on a luggage rack - don't leave it on the bed or the floor. I don't know whether it's better to just live out of your suitcase or use the drawers provided... since bedbugs don't like non-fabric surfaces, the drawers are probably safe enough, but I think I might feel safer if my clothes just stay in their bag.
And if there ARE bedbugs in your hotel room and you're worried about bringing them home, here's some excellent advice (basically sealing things in plastic bags and laundering/freezing/boiling them):

It's certainly more practical than my first impulse, which would have been to throw everything away!
