Just how stupid do they think I am? (a popup rant)

I got a pop up window last night while browsing. It said that I was a winner!!!! . All I had to do was to enter my e-mail address to find out what my prize was.

I don't know about you, but I am amazed at how often I have been a "Winner" on the net in the last year...
"If this box is flashing, you've won"
"Congratualtion, you are 36782987th visitor to this site, Click here to claim your prize",
"Congratulations, we think you are stupid enough to fall for this stunt, Click here so we can rip you off"

OK, Ive never seen this last one, but thats what they are really saying. The thing that frightens me is that there are probably people out there who would fall for this sort of thing and expect a prize other than a free subcription to every spam list on the planet.

One of our IS guys called in because a popup said his computer was infected with a virus.

The funny thing is that it doesn't even remotely look like the virus message window that normally pops up.

I've been the 1,000,000th visitor at a SLEW of sites! I think the grand prize is enough emails to represent ALL of the visitors...

You know, the sad thing is that so many people do fall for that stuff. It’s just unbelievable how gullible some people are. Just think -- if people didn’t buy from spammers or telemarketers they would go away. Oh, what a wonderful world it would be!

My favorite is when the pop ups are made to look like a system prompt...a Windows system prompt, pretty humorous to this Mac user!
