We returned home the 23rd after a long vacation. We stayed at AKL the 10th - 18th.

We were in a two bedroom suite, room 3481, on the Zebra trail. If you look at a map of the resort, it's at the very end of the first pod that comes off of the horseshoe.

One room had a king sized bed. It felt quite spacious. There was a parlor room with a half bath. The 2nd bedroom had a queen bed and bunk bed. This room did feel a bit small but it was not a problem. I also found the rooms to be a bit dark upon our arrival but, after the first evening there, I came to like the lighting. I thought it really added to the warm feel of the lodge.

The AKL is truly beautiful and I found it particularly so at night.

The bedroom with the bunk beds, had a very nice view of the savannah. The parlor and king bed room didn't unless you looked off of the side of the balcony at one end. The view was blocked fairly well by trees. I still liked this balcony though. It was twice as long as the other and when you sat out, you could hear the music that the AKL plays plus people having fun at the pool. I would have much preferred to be a floor or two up where the trees weren't blocking the view though.

Some days, we saw very few animals but on at least 3 days we saw giraffes fairly close by. One day, after a big rain, DH and I went out on the balcony and heard an unusual noise. When we looked in it's direction, we saw three giraffes running around on the savannah. It was an amazing sight.

It seemed to me that the giraffes spent quite a bit of time at the end of the 2nd pod coming off of the Zebra trail. Maybe I'm wrong and it's just a case of the grass always being greener but I would like to stay down there some day.

DD (4 1/2) tried Simba's Cubhouse and thought it was great. Her favorite day of the trip was the day we swam in the pool. It was a lot of fun and it wasn't crowded at all.

DS(22 months) and I went for walk and happened upon the storytelling at the fire pit. DS didn't understand everything but the other kids were having so much fun that he was laughing right along with him. The storyteller was quite animated and fun to watch.

We found the bus service at the AKL to be excellent. We waited about 10 minutes on two occasions. Other than that, we always walked right on and the bus left within a minute or so.

I wish that I had noticed that the coffee maker in the concierge lounge dispensed hot frothy milk earlier in the trip. I didn't notice until the last night. I made the yummiest hot chocolate that night.

I loved the lemonade in the lounge. I wish I had some right now. Also, it was great having the fridge with milk cartons and juice boxes. DS and DD loved that.

The lounge did get quite crowded towards the weekend. It was packed at breakfast on Friday and a lot of food had run out. We got the last open table and it was down towards the stairs. People were working on replenishing items but there definitely were limited choices for breakfast that day.

The staff in the lounge were very helpful and friendly. They had made an error with regards to our CRT PS. We showed up at the time we were told but CRT told us we were 3 days late. I showed the people at CRT what concierge had given us. They told us, not to worry, they would get us in but we'd have to wait a while. When I went back to the concierge and mentioned the problem, they apologized and explained what had happened. Concierge dealt with it exactly how I had hoped they would. They apologized for the mix up, refunded the money I was charged for the no show, and they figured out what had happened so that they could take measures for it not to happen again.

DH, my mom and I all loved the smell of the lodge. My stepdad enjoyed just sitting up in the lounge, reading the paper, and drinking the smoothie drink. He and I particularly loved the music playing all over the resort.

As for housekeeping, we were a bit disappointed. I'm not sure who's fault this would be. On 3 days, we asked at the front desk that our rooms be made up by the evening housekeeping staff. We were told it would be no problem. On only one of those nights did our room get cleaned. The other two nights, we got back to the room and nobody had come. It was time for bed for the kids so we couldn't have anyone come in at that point.

One other disappointment came when we took DD to the cookie decorating at Boma. It was listed on the back of the map with no mention that you had to sign up ahead of time. When DD got there, DH found that we had to sign up in advance. Apparently, things got a bit ugly and parents were demanding that their kids be let in. I think AKL should put a notation on the back of the map that says something about having to sign up in advance for this.

We truly had a wonderful trip. All 6 of us (ranging in age from 70 to 1) loved the AKL. I would definitely recommend it. It's a beautiful place. The attention to detail is amazing. I would love to go back.

Welcome home! Thanks for the report.

Just wanted to say that when we were there in May there was not an advance sign up for the cookie decorating. I tried to do just that and was told it wasn't necessary. I agree if you need to sign up it should say that.

LvsTnk, apparently, in some of the resort info, it stated that you needed to sign up in advance. Unfortunately, I never took the time to read it all. I just saw it listed on the back of the map and assumed it was a walk up type thing. You were smart to try to sign up in advance. It never occured to me.

Maybe it's a recent change and they haven't had time to change all of the documents.

My DD was a little disappointed but she handled it well. DH said, she just looked at him and said, "Oh well, we'll find something else fun to do."

Thanks for the great review of the AKL suite!

Good for your daughter, she definately knew she was at Disney;)

Thank you for your report on AKL! We are eagerly awaiting SUNDAY morning for our first trip to AKL. :D

We do plan on doing a number of the activities at AKL and am wondering if you could elaborate on the sign up procedure for the activities. I am very glad I read your post for I am sure that I too would have just showed up for the class. Do you know how and when you have to sign up?

Thank you!:bounce: :Pinkbounc

christophfam, I'm so jealous. I wish we were leaving for AKL on Sunday. :)

I'm sorry, but I don't know when or where you sign up for the cookie decorating class. I would ask when you check in or at Boma.

My DH said that, when he arrived, somebody stood up and announced, "We will only be able to take the 24 who signed up in advance. I'm sorry. There's nothing we can do about it." I'm assuming it was particularly crowded that day because the weather was terrible.

I don't think that you have to sign up in advance for most of the activities. I guess it would be best to double check though.

Have a wonderful trip. I hope you enjoy the AKL as much as we did.

While I was reading this my information from the Animal Kingdom Lodge was laying right here on the desk. I looked to see what I could find and in the information booklet that you get when you check in, under children's activities, it says to use your phone in your room to make the reservations. It says they should be made 24 hours in advance so if your not going to be there long you should make the reservation as soon as you get there. Have a wonderful time there. It's great.

Welcome back!! Thanks for the trip report, sounds like you had a magical time. I can't wait to get there.

Our first stay at AKL is quite a long way off, but I love reading everything I can about it. We are hoping to do the sunrise safari while we are there. Thanks for sharing your trip with us!
Pam

Carriep1657, it sounds like your trip was wonderful. *Sigh* Welcome home! I hope you're going to post some photos from your trip (hint! hint!)... ;)

We did have a wonderful time.

Pennylynn, I'm glad you found the info about how to sign up.

Patio, I think you'll enjoy your stay at the AKL. We certainly did.

Dogslider, we really wanted to do the Sunrise Safari but we had so many things we wanted to do we decided to wait until next time. We figured that others might not appreciate my 22 month old that early in the morning. :)

Janet2k, I thought of you on our trip. I think our room was 2 floors beneath the one you had. At least, it was 2 floors underneath the one I imagined you had. I don't know how to post pictures so I'll ask DH to help me some time. Unfortunately, my mom's the big photographer in the group and she was suffering from a stomach virus for most of the visit. I still take pictures with a plain old camera. So, when I get them developed, I'll try to post some. Thanks for all of the help you gave me in planning for the trip.

Carriep1657, oh, that is just too cool that your suite was below the suite that I stayed in. I just took a look at the AKL's resort map, click here to view it, and it does indeed look like we were on the exact same wing of the resort. The suite I stayed in is under the "dome" on the right: click here to view exterior photo of room. Was this the wing you were in (the Jacuzzi tub was down below, and the swimming pool was on the left-hand side of this photo)?

I hope you are able to post photos soon, as I would love to view them.

Janet, that is the corner we were in. We were two floors below you. I did have a bit of balcony envy and did wish that we had gotten the 5th floor. The main reason though was that our balcony under that dome were blocked by trees. I don't see them in this picture though. I wonder if they were added since your visit. The trees were right off the balcony. You could almost reach out and touch them.

I'm going to forward the link to my mom. I think she'll find it interesting.

Was one bedroom of your suite around the corner from that picture? That was the room we slept in. We had a nice view from that room. It was still nice to have the balcony near the hot tub area. I loved opening the door and hearing the music and people talking. I just wish that the trees hadn't been there.

We looked at my DH's pictures the other night. He uses a digital camera. He didn't take any of the room but he did take some nice ones of the animals.

Janet, I just looked at the other pictures of your 2 bdrm suite. It was cool to see the view from our room from a different height. Our 2nd bdrm did not have the day bed but looked the same otherwise. Also, looking at your parlor pictures, the parlor looks much less crowded than ours did. I guess the 5th floor suite probably has a few more square feet. For example, in our parlor, the door to the master bdrm, the armoire with the tv, the desk, and the balcony door were all right next to each other. There was practically no room between any of them. It was lovely but didn't look near as roomy.

I just showed the pictures of the 2nd bdrm to my DD. She got so excited. She said, "My bunk bed! My bunk bed!"
