I can't believe that people don't have fences around their property. Is that commmon in your area? Every community I've ever been in here in California - you have fencing on your prperty line.

I would speak to the neighbors. Then I would put fencing around my property.
Nobody where I live has a fence. I think it is most common in areas with very small lots, but it makes me feel like I am in a cage.

I'm thinking police report!!! And a bill for all the repairs delivered to your neighbor.

I agree!!!! ::yes:: And if you can afford it, I would put up a fence and let those neighbors know that while they have the right to party all they want, they do not have the right to allow their guests to vandalize your property. I would be fuming myself. It takes a lot of work and care to keep up a yard and create a garden.

Destroying the garden, like others have said, is vandalism, pure and simple.

I'm curious, though -- why did you barricade your yard with railroad ties?

I will try to answer some of the questions that were brought up. The railroad ties, we live across a school and they have a tendacy to park in your yard to pick up the kids and no one cared if the lawn is wet. Plus one night someone used the front lawn as a shortcut instead of the road leaving indentions. So I used railroad ties to go up and down my property, one neighbor used logs. Could it have been animals, I would say no. I had a 2 foot wall built at both ends of the garden with heavy cement blocks. Whoever did this picked up some of the cement blocks and had them thrown throughout the yard, and the path of destruction goes down from there through the whole garden. My neighbor denies the whole inicident and he claims that all of my gates to the yard was closed. We thought we were being nice by letting him use our driveway to store his vehicles. My yard is already fenced in with gates for the driveway and sidewalk. Yes they are only plants but I have put in many hours of work. This is my therapy when I am stressed out to go in and work in there when I needed some time to relax. The tomatoe plants were replanted but after being out of the ground for a few days in 90 plus weather they will not make it. Yes we do lots of canning, we make pizza sauce, salsa, sphagetti sauce with the tomatoes and now we have nothing left. I will call tommorrow and make a police report, what good it will do I don't know. My dad was asking today how things were looking after the transplant and I couldn't say. It just hurts to go in and take a look at the destruction. We have goverment apartments across the field and as usual the blame is going on the kids in those apartments. I have heard stories about those kids across the way. I guess I should look on the bright side and they did not get to the peach tree that is loaded. I have netting wrapped around the branches to protect them from the birds and it could have kept them out. The question we wonder is should we bother going away for a few day trips anymore? We are afraid if we go again who knows what will happen next. Our schedule is such that we can go away for 3 day trips as mini trips since I started a new job this year. Thanks everyone I am glad it is not just me that would be upset over this whole ordeal.

Saw my neighbor today at the grocery store. She asked if Frank came over to see me yet. I asked Frank who? I guess he is my neighbor the other side 2 doors down. She felt bad for what happened and did some prying around the neighborhood and found out that he tore the garden up. He was pretty proud of himself for what he did. I guess he was drunk when doing this. They are telling Frank he owes us a apology and he needs to do some type of restitution for doing this. I have to keep in touch with her because if no apology occurs they are no longer friends with Frank. So I will have to wait and see if he shows up.

Oh man. I am so sorry this happened to you and I think you have more than a right to be upset. Keep us updated!

wow... I would be furious for sure...but I hope Frank sobers up and does what is right... you had a lot invested in your property. He needs to do more than apologize! Good luck and glad you found out what happened.

I am glad to hear you foudn out who did this.

If you do go away for long weekends ask a neighbor to watch your house for you or have a friend or relative to come by a check on things a couple of times a day. You can't put your life on hold because of mean people.

If Frank is so proud of himself then why don't you send the police over to have him tell them all about it. The guy sounds like a jerk. I'd file a report with all you now know and let him deal with the repercussions of his own stupidity.

It's seems to be common in areas where the houses are close together. Out here where I live in NJ NOBODY fences in their property - for us - we'd have to have 1/3 of a mile of fencing to fence in our 4 acres - LOL!

Well at least now you have a name to give the police to follow up on this. What a jerk this guy is!!!

I'm speechless. YOur neighbor got drunk and ruined your garden and then TOLD people? DO you know this guy?

Was Frank at the neighbor's party? Is that where he got drunk? If so, it seems like the neighbor's having the party should be partly responsible. If Frank wasn't at the party, why would he go two doors down and destroy someone's garden and yard that he doesn't know. That story just seems a little strange to me.

Is this Frank a grown man??? Why would an adult do something like that? That is really wierd and I would report him to the police. If a grown man would do something so unusual, what else would he do?

As to what the Horned King said, if you just blow off whenever someone does something inappropriate your telling them and the rest of the world that that behaviour is OK. So not only will they continue to behave in that manner, their behaviour will only continue to worsen. Do you have kids oh horned one? Probably not. Or you would know better than to say this is no big deal. Yes you shouldn't let it eat you up. But you DAMNED sure need to deal with it in an aggresive manner. These type of people spend their lives looking for people to victimize. Don't be that person.

Good luck and I'm sorry about your garden. We have a flower garden that people think it is OK to steal from. I'm talking whole oriental lily plants, bulb and all, potted plants, trellises etc.!!! If I catch anyone I will press charges!!!

Wow, I'm so sorry. I know the work that goes into a garden like that.

File a police report. Letting it go just enables this Frank to do it again.

Build a big fence with gates/locks.

Hire a house sitter when you go away the next time.

Well, first it is vandalism, so it should be reported to the police as such. When the police are there, you can certainly tell them what your neighbor told you...that this Frank person was bragging about vandalizing your property. Since no one actually saw him, if he decides to lie to the cop and say he ahd nothing to do with it, then there won;t be much you can do, but at least it's been reported in the evnt that more vandalism occurs, there is a paper trail.

My across-the-street-neighbor just had a similar problem with the neighbor who lives behind her. He had a drainage pipe from his sump pump flowing into her yard, because he "didn't want all that crap flowing onto his grass". She talked to him about moving it. He gave her a lot of grief, got pretty nasty, but moved it. A couple of days later, her yard was vandalized...she had a some yard stuff (yard carts, rakes etc.) that were all mangled and broken and strewn all over her yard. She called the police, told them the story. They did go over and talk to the guy. Again, not witnessed, so they couldn't actually accuse him, but I guess the policeman made it pretty plain that thye had a good idea that it was him who did it, and if he got caught doing anything, he'd be arrested. The sad part is that we are talking about a 60-something year old man, not a teenager. :sad2:

I am not saying this is ok and not a big deal. What I am saying is that just keep it in perspective. No one was hurt, no one was killed.

I do also agree it need to be delt with. im not saying ignore the incident. What i am saying is have a cool head about it and do it the right way. First thing I would have done was flat out confront my neighbor. If that turned up nothing, sure report it. Not that the cops can probably do much without witness'.

I am lucky in that I have a "working" relationship with my neighbors that if this type of thing happend we could work out some type of "Compensation"(cash or work) to rectify the problem.

The most agressive route of Sueing, getting Cops involved, ect. doesn't always work. Sometimes simply discussing the matter(with those involved) can solve the problem long before agressive action needs to be taken.

Agin however this can all depend on the situation..and frankly I don't know enough abotu the poster, the neighbors(from the party), or the man 2 doors down to truely judge this situation. I was simply stating what I would do If it were to occure to me.

I wanted to comment on the neighbor. Everyone was all ready to hang her up by her toes and here she is not only innocent, but is supporting the victim! I say, way to go neighbor! Glad she stepped up to the plate.

Did you ever think of moving? Loud parties, the projects, drunken neighbors tearing up your yard. I might stop the mini-vacations and save a nice down-payment for a new house. Toledo has to have some affordable, nice housing. Heck, you drive out of the city a few miles and it's just farm land.
