As to DL and DCA: This time of year seems to be good as far as the weather goes. The days were pleasant except for a couple of hours in the afternoon when it did heat up a bit but was not unbearable. The mornings and evenings were delightful. The crowds were tolerable and only really bad on Monday. We had six-day hopper passes so our days were not hurried, which was wonderful, especially since we had two small children with us. My daughter had to use a wheelchair for medical reasons and I found all of the workers to be very accommodating and helpful. We found an excellent spot to view the fireworks at tables at the Plaza Inn. We got there about 90 minutes before the fireworks and had a leisurely dinner (the fried chicken is excellent). It is not necessary to buy food in order to sit at the tables; you will not be asked to leave. We also saw lots of folks sitting at tables around DL, eating food that they had obviously brought in; so the restrictions on outside food are not enforced. The parade down Main Street is very good -- worth waiting for. I had only one complaint: I’ve been going to DL for 30 years and this was the first time that I found the bathrooms to be a bit untidy. There were attendants but maybe not enough because they couldn’t seem to keep up with the cleaning.
By the way, during the fireworks, Tinkerbell flies back and forth several times, not just one time like in past years. And they’ve added Dumbo!! -- he flies back and forth and his ears even flap! It was a very special surprise.
As to the food:
We did the lunch with the princesses at Ariel’s Grotto -- very nice and the food was good.
Café Orleans -- never disappointed here. We had the Monte Cristo, the 3-cheese Monte Cristo, the ratatouille, the seafood crepe, the pommes frites, the onion soup, the gumbo, etc., and all were delicious.
I am appalled at the poor quality of the hamburgers in DL/DCA. I had one at Hungry Bear and one at Taste Pilot and both were horrible. I don’t understand why a huge business like Disney can’t get a better quality burger.
We did the barbecue at Thunder Ranch. The ribs and chicken were both very good, and also the peach cobbler.
Had a very nice breakfast at Carnation Café -- always pleasant there.
We had several breakfasts outside of DL -- at Mimi’s, Denny’s, and Millie’s. Of the three, Millie’s was my least favorite -- very greasy food.
One thing you must be sure to get is the beignets at the Jazz Kitchen in Downtown Disney. We also had the popcorn shrimp platter -- yummy.
We stayed at Howard Johnson’s. It was our first time there and we were very pleased. The beds were very comfortable and I liked that they fold the bedspread at the end of the bed so you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to. They gave plenty of towels, shampoo, conditioner, soap, and hangers. There was an ironing board and iron, small refrigerator, and Keurig coffee maker which made a good cup of coffee. The water park for the kids is lots of fun and much more than we expected. There’s a Jacuzzi, a kiddie pool, two slides, a splash bucket, two or three other water things, and lots of tables and lounge chairs for parents. Another great thing about this hotel is the small store that they have. They carry just about anything you could want or need while on vacation; and they give out free newspapers every day.
We also spent a morning at Newport Beach.
This is getting really long, so anyone has any specific questions, just ask and I will try to answer.

Glad you had a fun trip! I agree about the hamburgers - blech! Can't wait to see the new additions to the fireworks show! Thanks for the post! :)

I am curious about the "chicken being brought in" Statement. No sure what you mean.

Well you see Black Jack, back in the day, Disney had their own private stock as it were of live fresh organically raised chickens, that were specifically for their on site restaurants. Well one day someone from PETA, raised a holly bejeezus stink over it, Disney is on the 5, 6 and 11 o'clock news, and some pretty powerful spinning must ensue. So even though Disney was very humane to their chicken collection, they decided to end their fresh on site production of such. So ever since then, they have been shipping in those types of chickens that you see on t.v. where they are always trying to pass themselves off as real, healthy, tasty chickens, when in reality, no.... not so much... and to say the least at that.
I believe that is what the PP was referencing.

Regarding the chicken, what I meant was that I saw a family sitting outside of Pizza Port eating a big meal of fried chicken, potato salad, etc., that had obviously been purchased at a grocery store somewhere and brought into the park. My point was that Disney does not enforce the "no outside food" rule and they allow you to eat your food anywhere you want to.

The chicken mystery seems solved, but the hamburger mystery is still, well, a mystery. Could they all be awful because hamburgers must be cooked to "death" in order to avoid salmonella poisoning?

They gave plenty of towels, shampoo, conditioner, soap, and hangers.

Ah this is really important to me - hangers - we always end up asking for more as we take tons of clothes but then we are there for 14 nights. Also can you take your towels from your room to the pool or do they have towels by the pool. If we could leave our beach towels at home that might free a little room in our suitcases - but then we plan to go to the beach as well so maybe not. Also thinking of going to Newport Beach - how did you find it?

Oh and another question - how hot did it get - we are there in a month and I must say I was a little bit disappointed with how low the temperatures were at the moment - it was hotter in London at the end of last week! (We like hot, hot, hot)

Actually they do, I have sen it numerous times. What you do not know is where it came from. They could have smuggled it in in a stroller, many people do. Could have brought it from the Plaza and eaten it outside instead of in. Try bringing a bucket of KFC in, you will probably find out that it maybe a problem. All things are not caught.

Best of luck.

Pigby -- you want hot hot hot temps, take a visit to Arizona. It's suppose to hit triple digits again on Sunday. Just kidding. I'd never ask anyone to willing visit Arizona during the summer months. It's an oven out here. Oh but it's a dry heat. LOL.

We just got back from Disneyland and the temps there were gorgeous. They were in the mid 80's. And we loved it! Remember, we were escaping triple digit temps in AZ so the 80 degree weather was heavenly to us. And the crowds were decent too. But this was all before WOC. I don't know what the crowds are like now.

Ok then maybe not the triple digits :rotfl: - I would still like to go to AZ though but maybe when the tepms are a little cooler than that:goodvibes

Seriously mid eighties would be good - it's just that we don't want to do the long pants and long sleeved shirt thing in the evenings - have too much of that in the UK.
