Just got back from our first Universal trip (we have been a Disney World family for years)...

We loved it. Same price (actually a little cheaper) than a Disney All Star but I would consider it a Disney Moderate Hotel. Great theming (the pictures on the website don't do it justice) and nice layout. The pool was great, there's a lazy river, food court with lots of options (still food court food) and the seating area for the food court is great. You get to watch old tv commercials.

It's our go to for Universal moving forward (per the request of the kids). Very close to the parks (I believe all the hotels are based on the way things are situated). We didn't do Volcano Bay but Cabana Bay has it's own entrance to Volcano Bay so you don't have to take a bus, car, etc. to get there. I would highly recommend it.
Glad to hear you liked it. I have always loved CB for my solo stays, heading back in May after 2+ years away and in August also. I like the food options at the Bayliner diner, the Swizzle lounge, and the easy access to VB, which with a 3 park AP I treat as another pool.

Yeah, I've stayed there twice in the past, but recent reviews paint a pretty terrible picture so I was just wanting an honest opinion. I've seen hours long check in lines, weed smell in the hallways, lots of trash everywhere, non existent blankets with only a thin scratchy sheet on the bed, broken pool furniture, overflowing pool trash cans, etc.

We have tried Universal twice through the years, once probably in the late 80s or early 90s and again probably in the 2005 to 2010 time frame. Both trips were for a day or two on the front end of a Disney trip. We were o.k. with it but that was long before they had their own resorts and obviously before Harry Potter. We didn't feel like it was worth it for us. I've read a lot about the new rides and how much less the resorts are from Disney so I have a few questions.

If someone can not ride roller coasters or 3D rides would they still enjoy it? My son (adult) has nerve damage in his spinal cord so can't ride any roller coasters. For example: he can't ride EE at AK, can ride BTM but only once a trip and it has to be at the end of the day so he can go back to the resort and hot tub. Can't ride Space Mountain, even SDMT sometimes hurts. He and I both get motion sick on some of the 3D rides. For example: neither of us can ride Star Tours, for him it's a combination of the 3D and claustrophobia. He can ride FoP but I'm not a fan, it makes me a little sick. Neither of us can ride Mission to Mars, again the simulator for both of us and the claustrophobia for him. He now has a 1 year old baby as well. There are a lot of rides at WDW she can ride, basically mostly anything that she can be held in a lap on like Figment, Mexico, LWTL and the Seas at Epcot, Pirates, HM, PP, Small World, WTP, CoP, PeopleMover at MK, MMRR at HS, Safari and Navi at AK.

Given those issues, would there be enough rides to do at Universal?

I wouldn't call what you wrote a rant. It was actually more a rave, which a few legitimate criticisms. Not every person likes every ride, and that's totally okay. It's why there's a mix of different types of rides-to appeal to different people.

I agree with what you said about the Harry Potter sections. The only thing at Disney that comes close is CarsLand in California Adventure at Disneyland.

(Apologies to anyone who has read this next part on other threads that I have commented on). Universal did an excellent job recreating the world of Harry Potter. It is places from the books/movies almost perfectly recreated. You feel as though you are in the places you have read about or seen in the movies. Batuu is Star Wars because Disney says its Star Wars. Batuu is not something fans had a strong connection to before Disney created it. (The rides are fantastic, it's where you are and what there is between/around the rides that doesn't quite work for me.)

If you are thinking about upgrading the hotel and can afford it, do it. Upgrading the hotel is usually less expensive than buying the passes per day for each person in your group.
Thank you! … pretty flexible with a visit before or after Disney … either 9/16,17,18 Or 9/24,25,26.. I could also take a day or two from Disney … and still have enough time for parks.
ANY recommendation on universal Before or After Disney?
I think universal will honestly be 2 full days .. but we re not coaster people so really just want to See it … grab a mild ride or two.. if that helps in decision. THANK YOU.. so out of our league lol.

THANK YOU so much for writing this. I was a WDW AP holder for 20/29 years but I didn't renew this year. SO now BF and I have Universal passes and we go for the firs time in 3 weeks!
I hope you lol tell us ur experiences!!! Have a great time!!!

I was one for a long time as well. I got an AP for Universal 6 years ago and have been happier with them. They seem happy for our business. They don't care if we come from Florida. Great Discounts for our AP Universal. I really like that even if you are Seasonal you are not completely blocked out unlike Disney

I finally let my Disney AP go in February. I'm just can't deal with the Park Reservations, the nickel and dime attitude and the large crowds anymore

Two days if you are doing rope drop to close, but three days is better if you want to go at a slower pace and have less of risk of running of time to see/do everything you want. Universal is so much more than roller-coasters and intense thrill rides. It's not Six Flags. I do not ride roller coasters and I was able to easily fill three days in the parks.

Three days, okay. I didn’t realize about Halloween… sounds like BEfore Disney would be better than?…also Sounds like deluxe hotel would be easiest as well… with express, Just in case i decide theres more rides lol
I’ll be researching the rides n a sit down place to eat for each day. Thx!!!

Thanks for the review. My girlfriend is wanting to go to Universal in September. Neither one of us have been there (she asked if Harry Potter was at Disney), so it's going to be an experience. I'm not sure how many Universal days we're going to go, but hopefully we'll have fun.

We're still staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge with DVC points, but the goal for this trip is to relax and see what else Orlando has to offer.

We did 2 days at Universal before Disney in November staying onsite at Portofino and were so glad we did that first. We visit Disney every 2-3 years but had not been to Universal in a long time and it has changed so much. We were so sore from all of the walking at Disney if we did Universal after I do not think we would have been able to enjoy it or see as much as we did but this way we got to experience it when we were fresh and loved it.

Feel the exact same way. We let our wdw aps go in February, too crowded, to much planning, UO AP is half the price, don’t seem to appreciate their AP guest like UO. In fact we upgraded UO aps and have chosen the UO resorts over Disney for several years now. Just feel like we get more bang for our buck. If we want a little Disney we just go to Disney springs.

We just got back from our first trip, and I'll be honest, if both coasters and screen-based rides are a problem, I probably wouldn't go to Universal. My youngest is 5 so he couldn't go on the big coasters, but he still rode Gringotts and the Spiderman/Transformers/King Kong/Minions simulators, and Men In Black, which whips you around more forcefully than Toy Story Midway mania or Buzz Lightyear Spin. The only rides that I would consider gentle on the back would be the Dr. Seuss rides, Flight of the Hippogriff (which had really long waits, even with Express), and the Hogwarts Express train. And with your little one, even Cat in the Hat has a height restriction, so she might only be able to go on the train, the High in the Sky trolley and maybe the Dumbo style rides. If you love HP and would enjoy the shows, restaurants and shopping areas it might be worth one day with a park-to-park pass so you could ride the train in both directions. But with a one year old and the issues you've described, I would probably choose Magic Kingdom or Epcot instead, to get your money's worth. Just my opinion.

Bourne Stuntacular - Did not expect that. Just wow. I was blown away by that show. The new standard for shows, imo.
What age would you say is OK for this show? All ages? 13+? Or...?

Jimmy Fallon - Why do so many people bang on this ride? It's fun. Brings a smile to your face
For me, it replaced one of my favorite attractions and I’m not a big Fallon fan.

YMMV, there’s something for everyone at Universal

Thx for sharing… literally on their site to add three days after an upcoming week at Disney. Have always wanted to go but just didn’t lol. I’m weighing whether I should upgrade the hotel ( to get express pass) or just stay less expensive n add on the express pass..late sept, so if anyone has any opinions feel free to jump in. It’d be Fri-Sunday 2 day/2 park pass ( atleast I think that’s what it’s called).
Loved reading ur take on the rides..
I think it's cheaper if you stay at the deluxe hotel instead of adding the passes later. I know that the days we went, it was. I suppose it depends on how many people are in your party.

He probably needs to avoid all coasters. Someone had mentioned flight of the hippogriff. That one jerks me way too much. Seuss land might be fine. High in the sky trolley ride feels smooth enough to me. Cat in the hat does a few spins but seems pretty mild. There are also several good shows that aren’t 3d or moving. Bourne is fantastic and Horror make up show is fun. Just walking around the two Harry Potter lands is a lot of fun. Get a wand and do spells. Hogwarts express is a different ride each way and shouldn’t cause a problem. Jurassic Park area is neat too. I think The cave section is for the kids but I love it. Easy to move through and explore but Jurassic Park has been my favorite movie since I was a kid.

I don’t know about Rides but I think there is plenty to do and explore without them.

Like others said, there is a lot he might not be able to do, but I think he could still potentially have a good time. Is he a Harry Potter fan? If he is, just walking around both lands and window shopping is great. He can get a wand and go around performing spells. Just trying to get to all the spell locations will take a couple of hours. And queue line for HP and the Forbidden Journey is great, it's like a walk through attraction all on it's own. It sounds weird, but you could totally enjoy your time just walking through the queue line and seeing everything. Ask a CM at the front of the attraction, this doesn't always happen but sometimes they will let people walk through the Express Line just to see the queue, and from their they can very easily exit without getting on the attraction (although as a note there are stairs). Also, I know Despicable Me has a non moving seat option. Like the OP said, you're basically in a large room and everyone sits on a moving bench. You can ask for the non moving seat (which is also the option for children who don't meet the height requirement) and basically enjoy the attraction like it's a movie. It's a big enough room that hopefully you wouldn't have an issue with claustrophobia, but if you all walk in and find it too constrictive they will let you walk right out the exit. I think some other attractions have a non moving seat option, at least Shrek 4-D did before it closed. And how does he do with Splash Mountain and Kali River Rapids? There are some similar attractions at Universal (Jurassic Park, Dudley Do-Right, and Popeye) if you want to risk getting wet.

Might I suggest checking out the disabilities guide on the Universal website? It does a pretty good job describing the health restrictions and motion of each attraction.

This is a great suggestion. The line for Forbidden Journey is totally a fantastic walk through attraction worth doing even if you aren't riding. If he is a Harry Potter fan, do the full line, because the Express Line skips the Greenhouse and some other parts of the castle. Go through the line, and then when you get to the lockers before you board, tell a Team Member you don't want to ride and they will direct you to an exit.
