I guess I just need a place to vent where others will understand a Disney lovin girl's frustration.

We have been SO excited about our trip scheduled for this coming Thursday May 3....headed for Animal Kingdom Kidani- Savanna view....ahhh. Grocery order in, ready to go! We had Annual passes that don't run out til May 10- so we were happy to be getting our full use out of them.

Unfortunately, I landed myself in the hospital with an emergency surgery for a hernia.

Dr said no way can I go on the trip. So we had to cancel.
Of course borrowed points for this trip so they expire Sept 1 (always thought it went THRU your UY month- but nope)
We sure don't want to go in the summer since our kids don't like heat.
JetBlue charged us $100 per canceled ticket (x4)
and of course our APs are null and void.

So we decided the best bet would be to try and rent the points and book a new vacation in October when weather will be a little more to our liking and we can go to MNSSHP.

But there's NO availability. (I didn't bother to check SSR, but I just wouldn't stay there, we aren't renting a car and the resort to us is too big and lacks a theme we find desirable.)

I really wanted to go to MNSSHP and was telling myself it would make up for having to cancel this trip. I looked thru all of Oct and into the first 2 weeks of Nov....
Just disappointed and defeated.

Nothing anyone can do for us. The only thing we can do is wait and see. I was trying to be really positive and think of this Oct trip as a good choice, but now that's not even going to happen.

Just to say I am sorry that you have had to cancel and won't be able to get back when you hoped.

But, please keep trying--you just never know what might show up!!!

Hope your recovery is quick...

I was feeling sorry for you till you dissed my home resort... ;)

Seriously, that's incredible bad luck but don't give up, spots may open in a resort you want, put yourself on the waitlist and see what happens. :)

Also, you said you rented (or are renting your points).

Couldn't you use the proceeds to do a cash stay at another resort, say POR?

I am so sorry. This is my worst fear. We are 28 days away from our trip and I literally feel like I am holding my breathe hoping nothing gets in the way.

This upcoming trip is MY makeup trip. Three summers ago my family had plans to share our two bedroom savanna view villa with our friends and their child. When I made the reservations, I did not know I was pregnant. (I found out at 16 weeks along; 3rd child; it is a mystery that I didn't figure it sooner). By the time of the trip I found myself on bed rest. The rest of my family decided to go anyway since our friends had purchased airline tickets and we didn't want to inconvenience them. The worst part, besides not being there, was that my husband called several times to have me change/cancel/make ADR's! The DVC CMs thought I crazy to agree to call since I wasn't there and not enjoying anything.

Two words - Trip Insurance! :rolleyes1
If you have to cancel one trip it will make up for YEARS of cost for the insurance.

Sorry to hear about the cancelled trip. I would say that a trip with a stay at SSR (which I happen to like by the way) is better than no trip at all. Just my opinion of course.

I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about your unexpected surgery. I hope you are on the way to a full recovery and are feeling better by now. I'd try to rent the points and use the cash somewhere you wouldn't normally stay on property, at a resort you prefer. That said, I tried SSR and liked it, but it really isn't the same as a savannah view at Kidani. Hope you find something soon so you can look forward to an October vacation.

Another vote for a trip to SSR and the Halloween party versus no trip at all. We own a contract at SSR, but it is not a place that we long to visit. We had to cancel a week in a 2 bedroom standard view at BWV next month because my DH had a bike accident. We kept our week at BLT, and wanted to add 2 more nights onto the end of that BLT stay. The only resort available is SSR, so we booked it, booked tickets to La Nouba, and are looking forward to trying out the new SSR pool. Would I rather have my 2 bedroom standard view at BWV instead of SSR? Sure, but I would much rather be at Disney than be at home!

SSR is not a horrible resort at all...it's our home resort and quite honestly, we really didn't care for BWV last year when we stayed there. It's quiet and very relaxing. also, it's not as big as everyone fears. Staying in either the Springs, Congress Park or the Grandstand (all of which are centrally located) doesn't make the resort feel as spread out. Also...NO shared bus!! You could also try OKW for a villa.

We own @ OKW and SSR. Yes we love OKW , but found staying @ congress park with a nice quiet pool and view of DTD fun as well. The buses run well .We have stayed @ AKL Kidani last year and found that we missed OKW.Staying @ BWV this aug. 1 night before boarding THe Dream and really looking forward to that. soo keep trying and as other people have said and week @ SSR beats staying @ home.

Sorry OP. I hope you are feeling better soon!

Had to cancel our regularly scheduled 2 week summer trip in July as hubby ended up in hospital for 5 days and was diagnosed with Chrohn's. It was a very difficult and overwhelming week for us, as kids couldn't see Daddy for days. Long story short...thanks to amazingly expensive medications, hubby is doing pretty well! Had our make up trip for 10 days at NYE and it went great!!

DVC was awesome in that they gave us back our points, shipped us a package we had waiting for us at OKW for free, and took care of cancelling all dining reservations. They went above and beyond for us.

In the grand scheme of things, our vacations are very important, but not as important as health.

I am a bit perplexed by your dislike of SSR. If that is your only choice, it sounds like you would rather not go to WDW, and that is very confusing to me. Saratoga is awesome, and at this point, you have no other choice, so perhaps you can wrap your head around this?

At this point, you do sound a bit depressed and sad about the whole situation, but considering the alternative in terms of medical problems, you need to realize that you are able to make up for this trip, but you are not happy with the choices available to you, so at this point, you seem to be your biggest obstacle at the moment.

Best of luck, Tiger

Oct is a great time to go and I wouldn't let SSR be a deterrent, especially if you've never stayed there. You might be pleasantly surprised as we were. It's really very nice! Otherwise rent your points and pay cash for some place. :thumbsup2

I am so sorry for your loss (I know that's what it feels like!). I truly hope you are able to work something out for October. As other posters have said, try the waitlist. You never know.

I was supposed to be at HHI with my DH in January (21st) to celebrate our anniversary. On January 1st, I was event managing a concert and a rude child sideswiped me while I was on the stairs of the Mezzanine level. I ended up down the stairs and pretty embarrassed. I couldn't move the next day and found out I had a sprained ankle, severely sprained wrist, a torn tricept muscle, a bulging disc and a herniated disc in my lower back. I am still working through the back injury.

Because this trip was tied to some work obligations of my DH, he had to go and the doctor didn't allow me. That totally stunk. Incapacitated, alone, on my anniversary, while DH enjoyed HHI. Not fair!

I wish you a speedy recovery and the utmost of pixie dust for your future trip.

I'm so sorry!!! That's my greatest nightmare come true. We leave on May 16 and I pray the no one has a medical emergency forcing us to cancel. We don't buy trip insurance either (I know that's a bad idea) and have been to Disney in the summer and it's way too hot. I agree with most of the others about SSR, however. While we own there and have nevey stayed there, the choice between SSR and no Disney is a no brainer.....SSR. We always use Disney transportation and it's not THAT bad :). Hope you heal rapidly!

Ouch, I feel for you! Since we're both in our 60s this is looming as a bigger and bigger possibility in our futures. We just got back from a 6 day split stay at BWV and BLT. The day before we left, I gained a walking boot as my new best friend. I rented a scooter and went, even though my foot doc strongly suggested I cancel. I have a torn tendon and possible stress fracture in my foot. Now I'm home and I'm completely non-weight bearing--Disney did more damage, even though I was careful. I wish I hadn't gone-- postponing the trip wouldn't have been as bad as ruining the whole summer, including an August trip with my daughter and DGD.

It's hard to postpone but you might turn out having an even better trip in the long run. We didn't postpone for the same reason--we would never have been able to get BWV and BLT when we could go again. And our points are always borrowed, too! Waitlist elsewhere--something might come through.

Wowe, the simple responce is THAT SUCKS! I hope your other plans come through.

I'm sorry - get well soon!

Keep hopes up for future plans (wait list!) and please know some of us understand what you're saying about not enjoying specific resort(s). You've been a member here since 2004, so you know that as a community, the DVC DISboard folk are very nice, but, we do need to let each have their own opinions and stop trying to force our likes upon others.

Well, I have a very least favorite resort, too, and it is not SSR, but if it meant staying at that resort or not going at all, I would probably breathe a sigh of relief and just be glad I could get it all worked out.

Wishing you a speedy recovery and good luck with your decision.

Thanks everybody. I am sorry, I did forget I would offend others with my dislike for a particular resort. I'm sorry if I did.
I have actually been there. And Im not the only one- we are a family of 4.
We all feel the same way. Maybe its because we live in CT, so a trip to FL to stay in a resort themed like New England is unappealing.
It's not that we wouldn't go at all...it just means we wouldn't go in Oct.
Disney is a expensive and special place, we don't go all the time, so when we do go, we want to stay somewhere that everybody is really excited about. It's just us, others don't mind heat, my babies get sick in it and don't enjoy all the Disney has to offer. Everyone is different.

I also don't see myself as my greatest obstacle. We have our parameters of what a good experience at Disney will be, I think it's more important for us to look at the whole of our desires rather than forcing a trip that we wouldn't enjoy

I have questioned the travel insurance- but not sure how that applies to DVC rules- if I had the travel insc would our borrowed points go back to the previous year rather than expire? Would my expired APs have been renewed for the same length of stay on a future trip? I don't know that travel insc can save the things that were most frustrating- other than the $100 pr ticket fee from Jetblue.

Tomorrow is another day...I'm also waiting to see if we can get our points rented, somehow it would make me feel better to have that before we book again.

We shall see.

As for me, Im eating oatmeal and scrambled eggs and pudding and no driving and limited mobility for 2 weeks, then I graduate to a restricted diet. It will be 2 months before I can be active and exercise and do cardio, etc.
They repaired the hernia and had to cut out a small portion of my small intestine. Im making progress every day. My husband tells me the Surgeon said this was a life threatening situation. I'm happy to be home and with my little girls and husband and out of hospital! ;):lovestruc

Well, I am glad that the surgery went well and you are recovering. It is always a blessing in discuse to find this out early before it is too late.

I would just suggest that you keep checking back. Just like you, many have to cancel or reschedule vacations and this may be an opportunity for you to find what you are looking for when someone else has that cancelled trip that may be what you are looking for. But in the mean time, enjoy it with your family and friends. And listen to your doctor's orders. I had to go back in for surgery on my knee when I failed to listen to him to take it easy.

Yes, I will second what others have said and that is the first thing to do is to count your blessings that you're ok and to *take care of yourself*. Get better soon! Don't overdo!

Next, get those points rented and perhaps use the online time (and the extra time in front of the computer) obsessing over availability in the autumn. :)

The other thing to consider is booking at SSR and waitlisting at another resort. As long as you're not looking at a peak time, I think folks have had good luck with waitlists. If your first choice resort is available for some time period you can book their dovetailed with SSR and waitlist for a unified stay.

But above all, REST UP AND GET BETTER!
