The walls were dry wall and spackle; the house is about 30 years old and the garage had never been painted.

When I used the roller over the area that was spackled, the spackle started to crack and fall off the wall....does anyone know why this would happen?

I had some repairs done (tape was peeling) and re-spackled but that was about five months ago.

Also, I have no desire to paint over the primer, would it be ok to leave the garage with just the white primer? I plan on moving in about six years and it doesn't bother me.

Properly applied and sanded drywall compound shouldn't fall off the wall. Sounds like you'll have to redo those areas and reprime them.

I would not leave walls with only primer on them. It will be a dirt and dust magnet and you can't clean them. At the very least put on one coat of paint. Otherwise it will look awful in 6 months, never mind 6 years.

can I leave the primer on the ceiling and not have to paint that again?

The only thing I can think of is that maybe it wasn't sanded? :confused3

I would paint it rather than leaving just primer. I agree with the previous poster who says it will just be a dirt magnet.

I'm guessing you put the spackle on too thick and it was not properly dried.

I agree with the others, paint the walls and ceiling.

My house is 20 yrs old garage is spackle & primed only. still looks fine.

Just finished priming the little spots....I have a lot of primer left, was going to put another coat but the person at Menards told me to use one coat of primer and two coats of paint. I guess that makes more sense? Can't believe how much work painting is! :worship:

We just finished painting a 1950's kitchen and I swear it hasn't been painted or cleaned (walls) in over 20+ years took my girlfriend 4 days.

clean, prime, paint 3 coats. Looks amazing:worship:
