So we just got back from a week at WDW and had a great time. The initial plan was that if we liked it we would go back for Star Wars but now I'm not sure I want to wait that long. The husband is amenable if we focus on the stuff we didn't do this last trip. Since we were pretty hardcore this last trip--we really did just about everything in the four WDW parks--so we're looking at probably building a trip around Universal, Sea World and the Christmas party at WDW.

I'm trying to decide between a split stay where we stay at Universal (probably Royal Pacific or Portofino) for two or three days and the Swan for three or four days and just staying at Universal for five, six or seven days. I would like the trip to be a little more laid back this time. We had an amazing time this trip but were sort of exhausted by the time we got home. With that in mind I'm sort of leaning toward just staying at Universal but I'm a little unsure what we would do there for that long.

Like I said we will do a day at Sea World and an evening at the Magic Kingdom Christmas party but that still leaves quite a lot of time at Universal. We could always add a couple days at Disney, especially if we split stay--Toy Story Land will be new and we haven't done Candlelight Processional.

We're not really water park people but it would certainly be different--haven't been to a water park in ages. Is Volcano Bay even an option in December?

If we split we would probably just do two days of hopper tickets at Universal. If we stayed there the whole time we'd probably do five just because the difference in price really seems negligible. Is there stuff to do if you just run over to the parks for a few hours during a day, is there evening entertainment? I guess we could just do a shorter trip but we tend to travel in week long increments because we fly and don't like to feel rushed.

My husband is a huge Harry Potter fan. We're not huge coaster people but are up for just about anything once. Any input on how we should break up the trip and in particular what a longer trip to Universal looks like on the ground would be appreciated.

IMHO, changing hotel rooms in the middle of a vacation is work. And I am on vacation to avoid work.

Will you have rental car? If so, you could stay at RPR or PBR all week and make day trips easy. The parks at Uni are so close, you are able to look at your watch, say to yourself, "I have an hour before our plans." And shoot into the park for one/two rides. As your stay at RPR or PBR get you the Express Pass.

We have stayed for three nights, 4 days and it was not enough for our family. Then we had a 7-day trip with the EP and that was the best vaca ever. There is plenty to do (and re-do). There are lots of little things to search out. And it is all very relaxed compared to planning a WDW vacation.

CityWalk is the evening "entertainment" but there is no cost for that area to enter, most places are open until midnight.

The best deal with Universal and the one we always choose, is the buy 2 days get 2 free pass, park to park. You WANT the P2P if you have any Harry Potter fans in the group because the train ride between parks is cant-miss. Tickets are much cheaper when you don't go for the Volcano Bay option, for Cyber Monday right now they are like $230 a piece. Four days is just about the perfect amount of time to ride multiple things, lazily stroll through both HP areas and re-ride everything you wanted.

We tend to stay right off site, there are several chain hotels a 5 minute shuttle/Uber ride away, we even walked one day that was like 25 minutes. Our next trip, we will be splitting between Universal and WDW, switching hotels. Yes, this can be "work" as the other poster mentioned but it still beats the cost of transportation between the two places if you don't have a rental car, which we won't. I don't mind packing up and moving just once, it's not going to be a huge deal.

We recently stayed at the Embassy Suites kind of between WDW and USO rather than switch hotels. It worked out ok, but we spent about $20-25 per day on Uber. The hotel shuttle was horrible.
