Just double checking...NY EZ Pass can be used

I NEVER add a rental car to my Maine EZPass and have never had a problem with it. Honestly, I think it's just an "issue" to deal with; if your pass reads a plate, you'll be charged whether or not the plate is on your account, is my guess. According to autoslash.com:

"How to Use Your E-Z Pass in a Rental Car

Technically, you’re supposed to add the rental car’s license plate to your E-ZPass account. In our experience, you don’t have to. Just make sure you firmly hold your transponder up to the center of your windshield. If for some reason the toll plaza doesn’t read your transponder, it’ll bill the rental car company anyway.
Don’t own a transponder and like the idea of having your own? It’s cheap and easy (and sometimes even free) to get your own, no matter where you live. We often recommend ordering an E-ZPass transponder from Massachusetts, since there is no monthly fee. In addition, the cost of the transponder gets credited to your account and made available for tolls."

If you add the rental plate, make sure to take the plate OFF your EZPass account while you are waiting to board your flight, just to make sure there isn't a charge from the next family that rents that car. I have heard this can be an issue, although I don't know anyone to whom it's happened.

Maine offers replacement shielding bags and velcro strips for free. I always put my EZ pass in the bag when I travel, and take the windshield part of the velcro strip with me. I have found you can reuse the windshield part multiple times, so I can stick my EZ pass on the windshield of the rental car, right where I'd put it in my regular car. I just peel off the velcro part and take the whole thing home when returning the car.

In January you were told not to add a rental car to NY Ezpass. Lynnfitz is correct, NY EZPASS recently gave you the option of adding a rental BUT
You need the license plate number. It takes to to 48 hours to populate through the system. Toll by plate during that time may be billed to the rental agencies account.

MAKE SURE YOU PROPERLY MOUNT THE TRANSPONDER ON THE WINDSHIELD

We have a FL SunPass Pro and just used it in Ohio with a rental car. The SunPass website let me enter date & time for rental pickup and for rental drop off (in addition to car make, model, license, etc.). After drop off, that car disappeared from the list of vehicles on our account without any action by me.

So, NY EZpass does not require you to add the rental car plate?
I spoke with someone at EZPass and was told you do need to add it. If you download the app you will get a pop up asking if you need to update your cars every time you log in. It looks pretty easy to do, just the type of card and plate number. I’m in NY.

Which EZ Pass? There are three different agencies that issue EZ Pass devices in NY and often they have different rules. You don't have to add it, but it helps in situations where the transponder isn't read. In theory when the tolling agency goes to check the plate against enrolled vehicles, it will get to your EZ Pass account before the last ditch rental plate billing, unless it's one of the companies that puts a transponder in the vehicle.

If you’re flying in and renting a car in FL I’d consider using the visitor toll pass program versus flying with a transponder. You’d have to wrap the transponder in a foil bag, get it out of luggage when you land, go online and register the rental car plate to your transponder, etc.

That being said the rental car transponders usually have a big toggle to turn them off, since a lot of people just prefer to pay cash tolls. That’s the same thing you’d do if you were using visitor toll pass or your own.
I fly with my MA EZ Pass all the time, never had to wrap it in a foil bag? I throw it in my handbag. Yes, I enter the rental car info into my on line account but that takes 45 seconds??
