just curious, what happened to the fireworks?

I was there and saw a couple of shells go off about an hour early. I was not surprised to hear the announcement a little bit later that they were canceled.

I was glad to see them Sunday... in December when they had issues like that they were canceled for several days.

It's easy for cast members or anyone else to blame the weather, and it's often a true reason for cancelling the fireworks, but I think the above post is significant here. Fireworks launching prematurly, especially in light of the problems in December, is another sure reason they'll cancel the fireworks. It happened to us this winter. The fireworks were planned, everyone was in place ready to watch, there was not a hint of wind on the ground in the trees or up above (when a child released a balloon it went straight up forever) and five minutes before the fireworks were to start, one went off prematurely at ground level. Sure enough they cancelled them five minutes later, right at showtime.

Later, an employee at Casey Jr.'s Circus train was talking with people in line. He was telling us that Tinkerbell makes everything fly around here like Dumbo, and even the fireworks. Then he seemed to remember that the fireworks had just been cancelled and he covered himself by saying, "Tinkerbell came a little too early tonight," then he changed his tune and started blaming the wind when people started asking more questions.

Therefore, I think they always blame the weather, and it's believable and easy to say the wind aloft can be worse than at the groudn (and I'm sure it's often the true reason), but I think there are other technical reasons that cancel the fireworks and weather is used as the default answer.

Sure, there are other technical reasons they cancel them, but the most common reason is simply the wind....it rarely happens really, it's only happened to us a few times and we've been there a lot.....lol

a cast member we spoke with on the weekend told us that low humidity is also a reason they get cancelled these days, but he did not know why they were cancelled that day (Saturday)

I have heard this too, but i believe it's just a misconception. Fireworks work fine in low humidity.

They fire fine in humidity 0-100%, but appear worse when the humidty is high because it keeps smoke near the ground obstructing the view. Not in the article quoted below, Disney uses compressed air launchers to shoot the shells up in the back stage area which helps decrease the low level smoke.

Good weather is the key to these good times, of course, but did you know it's also the key to spectacular fireworks?

Nothing puts a damper on a fireworks display like a muggy day. Let the chairman of the famed Zambelli Fireworks Company of New Castle, Pa., explain: “The brilliance of fireworks is better in low humidity," says Dr. George Zambelli. "The higher humidity will cause the smoke to lay closer to the ground and appear more dense, and ultimately it will decrease the brilliance.

"The most brilliant fireworks are in low humidity when you have the winds carrying the smoke away from the spectators. In large displays you have a lot of pyrotechnic material going off at once, so you need something to dissipate that smoke,” he said.

What about other weather conditions?

Lightning storms can be too dangerous to set fireworks off, and they usually cause a delay in the program.

Oddly, rain isn't a problem. Fireworks can be fired right through it.

"Rain doesn't cause an issue and it doesn't impact how fireworks look because the colors are so vibrant," says Julie Heckman, executive director of the American Pyrotechnics Association, the fireworks industry's main trade association.

You are lucky you got to see them one night! The times we have gone around spring time, we have had whole trips where we wait every night (staking out a good spot in front ot the castle early, of course) and had them cancelled each night. Spring is a notoriously windy time at Disneyland, unfortunately. Even if it is just blowing a bit, they can easily cancel them. Look at the flags posted around the castle for the tell tale flapping!

My Dad used to work for a body and paint shop that was across the 5 freeway from Disneyland. Every week they had cars from the neighborhood that were coming in to get sanded out and re-painted (at Disney expense) because of the fall-out from the fireworks. This was probably 30 years ago, so it's been an issue for a long long time.

Exactly. It's not only about where they go up, but where they are going to come down. :headache:
