Just Curious... What Does This Have To Do With Anything?

I'm sitting here at the doctor's office,:rolleyes1, it's a new doctor so I had to fill out paperwork. At the bottom was the question, "Are you a Jehovah's Witness?"

I'm curious why they would need to know. It's an OB/GYN if that matters... Maybe they birth differently? :confused3

I agree with PP, I'm pretty sure they don't do blood transfusions. Maybe even other "interventions" are not accepted so they would need to know your next of kin if they were going to do that sort of thing. I would say this is their CYA to prevent a law suit.

They cannot receive blood transfusions as stated.
If I am not mistaken that is why Selena died. She needed a blood transfusion but it was refused by her family due to being JW.

They can't receive blood or any blood products, it is against their religion. I worked hospital registration for years and a JW would always refuse blood and had to sign a waiver for this so the Dr and hospital couldn't be sued for not giving them blood.

I'm going with poor wording. It should be something like, "do religious beliefs prohibit you from having any procedures or examinations..."
I'm sure there is a Jehovah or 2 out there who has had a blood transfer, people have varying levels of belief.

I remember that. I grew up in Corpus Christi and I do recall that detail. Selena's death was a HUGE deal. I was 10. People responded a lot the way folks did to Michael Jackson's death - some thought "oh, how said" and some went way overboard with it.

Not that any of this is very relevant to the OP but it just brought back some memories!

I know at least one JW who carries a card in his wallet specifying no blood or blood products due to his religious beliefs.

Yes. This wording would make a lot more sense. They shouldn't assume that everyone who belongs to a specific religious group subscribes to all of it's beliefs. They should ask if there are specific procedures that you wouldn't want to have.

My OB's forms asked if I was related by blood to my husband, and if I refused to eat potatoes in any form. Wth?? We laughed with the nurse about the related question and she just shook her head and said You'd be surprised!

:confused::lmao:

I get the related by blood one....a little? Some states let you marry your first cousin etc., and there is an added risk for birth defects....but the potatoes? What does that have to do with anything? Lol.

JW's generally do not accept blood products. If someone is a JW we have to give them an in deptch form of what they will and will not accept. Many are willing to accept Albumin with which is derived from blood, just not other blood products.

The potato one has me stumped? Maybe some of the starches are used in other products? :confused3 I work in surgery and I have no clue.

This one peaked my interest.

Followers of Jainism don't eat potatoes or any other root vegetable for religious reasons. (They don't eat any vegetable that has to be killed to be eaten, eating the root of a plant kills it, eating the fruit does not).

Potatoes are used in the making of some medicines (including appetite suppressents.) So that may be the reason for that.

Google is a wonderful thing.

I've never heard of Jainism...what is that? I'll have to Google it :lmao:

So, basically, they are against cruelty to vegetables? I really have seen it all

As pp have said, JWs do not accept blood transfusions. We use pediatric tubes for blood samples instead of adult size tubes for them to minimize blood loss.
