Just complaining

I don't blame her actually. Having served as executor for both parents, it's can be a lot of work and time when you're dealing with multiple beneficiaries. It's not hard - just time consuming, especially if you're working or parenting and have other obligations. You have stay on top of things and read lots of fine print.

I do think the law allows her the right to charge something for executor services on the estate if she's not inheriting anything.

I agree she should have been paid. She just wouldn’t move at all. Then when she did, she decided the amount (insane amount) I was the only heir.
When I say I still feel badly, it was because we had what I thought was a great relationship before his death, and it was awful when she saw the will. I hated and still hate that part.

As an executor who has been trying to close an estate for just over 18 months - this has also been complicated by the pandemic. I don't know how things are in your area, but the courts where I was trying to do things would close due to covid or try to operate with a small number of employees (in the beginning) The attorney we hired had some pandemic related setbacks. Trying to make appointments to deal with various accounts was complicated. And selling the house was a challenge. I kept the beneficiaries informed throughout the entire process, but compared to when I handled my other parent's estate 5 years ago, this has been far more difficult. And settling an estate always takes longer than the people who aren't in charge of it think it should, in my experience.

My DH and I currently only have wills (along with POA, health proxy, etc.). Our sole beneficiary will be our only daughter once we both die.

Is this sufficient, or do we need a more detailed estate plan?

My mother passed away in July and we are finally getting close to settling her affairs. There are 4 of us kids, dividing everything equally, but one of my brothers was her POA as well as her Executor. It complicated things. I am beyond blessed (and I can't stress this enough), that we all get along great and have had no issues at all. We were all kinda shocked that my mother had anything left to divide, quite frankly.
