We just checked out of VWL yesterday and we absolutely loved the resort. We had a dedicated non-smoking 2-br at the end of the hall facing the woods. It is in great condition and very very private. The 2nd bedroom seems bigger than a lock-off that we had at BWV, probably because it does not have the kichenette and the entrance door.

However, I saw someone smoking on the balcony several doors down from me and I am pretty sure the whole section is non-smoking. What is the policy? Just curious.

Like many other questions that are asked, the answer will be different. You could ask any number of people who work at WDW or DVC and get as many different answers. At OKW for example the balconies are really far from each other, so it would be very unlikely that smoke could travel from one to another balcony: however, at WLV the balconies are closer together, because it is more hotel like so you have a different problem. The truth is there is no real policy. Let me tell you my problem, I have asthma, and of course do not smoke, can't put up with the smoke or smell of being in a room that was a smoking room, my wife on the other hand is an addict when it comes to smoking, like most. So what we do is rent a non-smoking, top floor, one or two bedroom unit all the time. She smokes outside all the time on the balcony, just like she does in our house, never inside. Now there are people out there that will tell you if a building is non-smoking she should not be doing that, but smoke from her cigarettes will never reach anyone, it is not possible. The problem here is that if you say to someone they can not smoke on the balcony where do you think they will smoke? that is the problem. That is why there really is no strict policy, we can only hope that smokers do not smoke in a non=smoking room. Now having said all that WLV do have a special problem in that area because I believe the balconies can be close to one another. Like I said at the start, ask a dozen people you will get a dozen different answers.

I agree with Pa@okw95. There is no consistent official policy.

IMHO, the best policy is consideration for others, aka The Golden Rule.

Smoking is NOT permitted on teh balconies of non-smoking rooms. Call MS and ask for yourself. Why should those who don't smoke be deprived of their balconey to support others health harming addictive insurance raising habit.

When WDW goes to "Non-smoking" at all there resorts in the future, you won't have any of these questions and problems...............especially when your credit card is charged $300 for a cleaning if you do

Actually, I have. MS, and the front desk at BWV both told me that smoking on the balconies of Nonsmoking villas is permitted.

My MIL smokes and we had to decide between a Boardwalk view (all nonsmoking) and a smoking room. I agree with your point though and decided to get MIL a smoking room.

This is not a statement of how I feel about this personally or what I think about carrying smoke back in on your clothes etc.

But - smoking is allowed on all balconies except at AKL. I have emailed WDW to ask, and have been told the same by MS.

The room itself is non-smoking, but they do not extend the policy to the balcony.

You don't get as many answers as there are people. Smoking is permitted on all WDW balconies except possibly AKL. I had heard that before staying at AKL, then asked for a smoking room instead of savannah view and MS told me that I could smoke on the balcony, so I requested savannah view.

At AKL I asked the concierge lady, she gave me an ashtray for our savannah view balcony.

Desparado, sorry, but you are wrong. Its possible that some CM was commisurating with your hate for smoking and just said that to make you feel better, but its not true. Smoking is definitely permitted on balconies of non-smoking rooms.

I don't know about the ville's but Disney doesn't allow smoking at all unless you are in a smoking room or a smoking area.

They don't enforce this rule very much as I have seen guest in the parks go up to a cast or security guard and ask them a question with a lite stick in their hands.

I have also, complained at CR about the guest above us dropping their left overs onto our balcony. Housekeepping did come after I called to clean up the mess, but it kept happening for several days after that, so I called each time.

Perhaps some of you are right. When you work with a cancer hospital and see the damage, horror and misery that the stupidity of smoking causes and hear so many people with cancer and bald heads from chemotherapy say "If I'd have only used my head and stopped smoking a long time ago" one acquires some bias. We all pay for the stupidity in higher insurace premiums caused by smoking related diseases. If a person is in the grips of the nicotine drug addition and cannot avoid smoking, the balconey is certainly prefered over destroying a non-smoking room.

I agree with Nick, I look forward to a $300 fine being put in place for smokers violating non-smoking room designations.

Just curious, is the $300 fine for smoking in a NS room something Disney's going to start doing? I hadn't hearrd about that. I'm not a smoker, so it doesn't affect me - just curious;)

Being a non-smoker I can deal with someone smoking on a balcony in a non smoking area a lot more than I could deal with what we experienced last year at VWL... the intense smell of an illegal substance being smoked in a non smoking room. That smell ran the length of the hallway.:earseek:

Hasn't started at WDW "yet"...............but a lot of the major hotels across the USA have already implimented the charge to customers who do smoke in "non-smoking hotels".

Its just a mater of time before WDW resorts do the same.::yes::

When we checked into the GC out at DL a couple of weeks ago, the CM checking us in informed us the GC is a totally non-smoking hotel. If we did smoke in the room there would be a $200 cleaning fee billed to our credit card. Not being smokers we thought that was great.

We recently stayed in a Gulf Coast beach condo and the cleaning fee for smoking in a nonsmoking unit was $500. You had to sign an agreement to pay the cost if you smoke in the unit and leave a credit card before you were given the keys.

There are several reminders of the fee placed in the unit.

Just a friendly reminder to keep this on topic. Lets not start bashing each other for our opinions on this subject.

Yes I too have very strong opinion on this subject, but this is not place to discuss them.

We just returned last night from a week stay at the Grand Californian at DL. The previous poster was right that you do have to sign a waiver or pay a fee for smoking in your room. However, I did learn that guests can smoke on their balconies without penalty. The guests staying right next to us were smoking on their balcony. I have asthma and called the front desk and asked if the non-smoking policy was enforced for the balconies. The CM told me that legally they cannot ask guests to not smoke on their balconies but if it really bothered me they would send up security. I didn't have them do that as we were ready to go to bed anyway. They ended up only staying a couple of days so it wasn't that much of a problem but I was glad I called to get the actual policy.

Guess that depends on who you speak to at MS. I have been told by MS, checkin CM's, housekeeping that it IS allowed on the balconies.

won't happen, Nick. I doubt they will ever charge anyoone's credit cards for anything. Considering the "shrink" at the DVC props. I find it hard to believe they would even consider it.
