okay my neighbor who has recently told me that she and her "husband" never got married 10 years ago because insurance is too expensive and she remains a "single Mom" so the state pays for healthcare for her and her THREE children, who gets all kinds of other state and fed help including food stamps, WIC, reduced electric, reduced heating oil, etc etc, who hasnt paid a mortgage payment since last summer because her "husband" got laid off (and now works under the table and collects $700 unemployment a week) and under the new government guidelines they can never be foreclosed on while he is unemployed, just had the true green lawn people here to do a treatment for their lush and lovely lawn.

I just really can't take it. I don't want to start a range war here, but we work SO HARD for what little we have, and are grateful for what we have, yet they are sucking the system dry and are using the money to pay for things we could never afford.

I just can't take it anymore!!!!!!!:sad2:

She is lying to the welfare office. Even if she isn't married, she has to report the assets for the whole household. Honestly, and I may be in the minority, but I would report someone like that, but only because she is bragging about it.

I wouldn't even know where to report?! I was told by a social worker that they dont have time or staff to investigate that kind of stuff, so it's not really worth the hassle!!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

grew up knowing a family like that and the "DH" worked for welfare !! They did it until all of their kids were out of the system (18) and then got married.

...and some people wonder why the US is broke...it's people like this bringing us all down.

First, if you report it, can you prove it? second, this is a fishy story, unless she lives in government housing (the projects) there is no government regulations that will prevent her mortgage from tossing her out if she hasn't paid. There are government programs that will help you readjust your mortgage. How do you think all these banks are foreclosing on people now?

Lastly, I think you need to lose the jealousy. there are always theives, crooks and people who use the system. As long as humans are in control, greed will come into the picture. Stop trying to keep up with the "Joneses". you are your own moral compass. If you are grateful for what you have, and you think they are abusing the system simply call the welfare fraud department (number is in every yellow pages or goggle "welfare fraud").

Why are you complaining here if you're not going to do any thing more productive? Have you contacted you local officals? State officals? Welfare control board in your state? If he's getting unemployment issurance while working under the table that's fraud, have you contacted your state attorney generals office?
I love people who complain about "the government" but won't take the time out to do more. You say you are mad but don't want to start a range war, well evidently you're not too mad.

Sorry if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. YOU are the government. If you want things to change, get off your you know what, stop complaining on the dis and find out how to file a complaint.

I am actually more mad at the govt for letting this happen...

Been saying it for years, if we as a country continue to allow the govt to be the provider for so many people, this country will not be around for our future generations..

:sad2::headache::sad1:

And it's perpetuated from one generation to the next as their kids learn how to "milk" the system. OP, I understand your frustration.

I think that there are definitely some families who need the assistance, the modification, the welfare, the medicaid. I was never one to vote to restrict those programs.

That being said, I have a friend who at the same time as applying for a modification and receiving a modification and receiving permanent disability (although she has a personal trainer and does everything), went shopping with me where I talked her out of purchasing not one but two Coach purses. Lost the war though, because then she went and bought a Gucci one.

The next week, I received a 10th anniversary gift from DH of a good sized piece of jewelry. What happened two weeks later for Valentines Day - she wanted and purchased a similar one. Now she wants to go look for a TAG. I don't get it. How do you qualify for these programs yet be able to purchase this high end stuff. I should mention she received a bkrptcy discharge two years ago.

I am very put off by this.

the max amount of unemployment in virginia is around $360 a week..
wonder how he gets $700?

I just tell myself, what goes around comes around. I can sleep at night, and that's what I care most about. I understand how frustrating it is, though!

The IRS would investigate him very quickly.

Happens alot... sadly enough.

There was a person that worked here that was doing the exact same thing.

Wow! Harsh much? As usual when you post on the Dis there are always people who attack without knowing all the facts.

You are WRONG about the forclosure policy in our country right now. If you hire a foreclosure attorney, and you are collecting unemployment, and have lost your job through no fault of your own, not only can they not foreclose, when you do get a job they have to work with you to adjust your mortgage to a rate that you can afford to pay.

Next, I wouldn't call it jealousy. I wouldn't want her life. But it does bother me to know that I am paying for all that she and her husband and three children receieve and that she has not problem abusing things this way.

And finally I don't have aproblem reporting it. You're right. It needs to be done. But I also have to be very careful as I have to live next to her every day and she is a volatile and mean spirited person who has has made alot of people in the neighborhood miserable over small issues. We tend to try and keep her at an arms length and just not interact too much. For whatever reason, the odd occasions I have a conversation with her she lets her whole story loose with me. I have told her I think it is wrong and she feels that there is no other way to make it in this day and age. We disagree.

Thanks for your thoughts..................

While I understand your frustration, it sounds like you're frustrated with your life - "but we work SO HARD for what little we have, and are grateful for what we have, yet they are sucking the system dry and are using the money to pay for things we could never afford," and pointing the finger at them.

I also suspect the $700 week unemployment - that doesn't sound right at all - that just can't be right - no one gets that much! And, people can get thrown out for not paying the mortgage. As stated, you need to report this if it's true, instead of griping about it. It doesn't do anyone any good for you to complain to the wrong people. Take action.

Report it! Call you local DHS office and file a complaint. I believe you do not even have to give your name, just what you know, enough to peak the case worker's interest. My guess is $700 every 2 weeks in unemployment but still, she is required to report all income in the household, whether she is married to him or not. She is committing fraud, if she has been doing it for quite some time, they can go after her for ALL of it! It happens all the time here in good old Muskegon, Michigan where I am from. At least a few times a month I read in our local newspaper about Welfare fraud and it is usually women who are not married with several children from several different men. They are ordered to pay it ALL back and/or face jail time. The only way to change it is to take matters into your own hands. I would!!!!

I think you should MYOB. There is no law that she had to get married and there are plenty of other people in the US who can't pay their mortgage because they were laid off.

your neighbor may be lying or exaggerating..there are no states that pay 700$ a week for unemployment
