The "old way" is becoming the "new way" once again.

I fully expect that we will be in a similar situation some day. My Dad has some health issues and we've already told my Mom that she would be welcome to be with us. Jim has a brother, who is just the sweetest thing, has autistic tendencies, never diagnosed. Has no friends his age, was ridiculed in school, very sad, but I adore him. I think one day we will have one really big house with 2 in-law apartments so that everyone will be together, but have their own space too.

Same here, Cathy. We'll likely end up having MIL move in with us someday when she need extra help (which, hopefully, won't be for many years still). When FIL passed away, Nicole and I knew that left us as MIL's support for the most part, since we couldn't imagine BIL taking on the responsibility.

It's highly unlikely to happen with us. Although when we were looking at model homes in Celebrations, we did think the one with the separate apartment formation might work out as long as there were strong locks on the doors.

We already financially take care of a good part of MIL's upkeep, but it would be unhealthy for our marriage (and DH says for him, even if I wasn't in the picture) to live with her. So we do what we can without having her actually move in.

Notice how I didn't say my MIL Just kidding, she is a wonderful lady, but I really don't think we could live together.

until WWII multigenerational homes were the norm rather than the exception, and young peoplel lived with their parents at least until they were well established in their careers or were married.

I've been looking at new homes lately and some of the builders are starting to offer a multi-generational plan, with a MIL suite complete with it's own small kitchen, bath, bedroom and sitting room. I think that might be the way to go because I also think we'll be having a parent live with us in the future as their health declines.

My mother has had a suite in my home since 1988. She pays no rent or anything and it is nice to have her near.
