Just bought - did you keep points or sell back?

We just returned from a 2 week vacation to Disney (Caribbean Beach/DCL) and became DVC members. Yeah! I was just wondering if most people kept their points or sold them back for the discount? We originally were going to sell back because we have no more vacation time for this year, but upon looking at it further, we realized that it would be more valuable to us to keep the points and bank them for use later.

What did most of you do? We want to make sure that we did the right thing.

Thanks, Tiger aka Piglet's Momma

We are very excited, but a bit nervous as we are Canadian and so the exchange rate is a bit of an issue, plus we owe on the house and new van. I am a very cautious gal and constantly worry about things I shouldn't be worried about, but I also love Disney and really see the value in DVC. Our DD will be 1 at the end of the month, so my DH and I feel good that we have done this for her and a future child if we are so blessed!

Thanks so much for your welcome message as Disney does feel like home to us!

Welcome Home!

We thought about the magical beginnings when we bought a few years back and almost sold our points back. We looked at this board and asked a few qestions and decided to keep them. Figured we could sell for double what they offer. Ofcourse had no intention of renting. But we were in the situation where we like the idea of the points more. Although we are not well off and the practical thing would have been to sell back to increase down payment.
Whatever you decide..........Howdy neighbor!

Congratulations and Welcome Home!!

We purchased 225 with a February use year in March and we kept our points. We knew we wanted to vacation in August so that worked well for us. We are using 150 in August and are banking 75 for use during Spring Break next year. Spring Break falls during Premier Season for us in 2005 so we could use the extra points. Both trips will be in a 1 bedroom (me, DH, DS11 & DS9).

Basically, you need to decide how many points you will actually need for next years visit and if, financially, it's not necessary for you to sell your points back to disney the first year

Enjoy your DVC!!

Welcome Home.

Don't worry about whether you did the right thing or not. Each person's situation is different. We sold ours back as we needed it for a down payment. But it would have been nice to bank them into the next year for a better vacation.

We just spoke to our guide, and although we could use the extra money for the downpayment as money is tight (on maternity leave), we decided to keep them for use next year.

Thanks! Tiger

Are they giving you $5 or $10 a point? I wouldn't do it for $5. You could rent them for $10.

When I bought, they gave $10 with a maximum of 150 points. So I soldback 150 of my 250 and banked the other 100. I bought in September 1999 with an April use year, so I got the next 250 points in 7 months plus the 100 banked. My first trip was in May 2000.

It was $10.00 per point and sell back or get a $5.00 per point discount to keep points. We decided to keep points for next year.

Thanks for the info - it seems as if there is so much to learn!

We used our points toward a credit. For our add on we banked the points. We already had ressies at AKL that was paid for.

I've been kicking myself for taking the $10 discount off the price of our 270 point add on last month.

We are out of points this year, and have already borrowed most of 2005's points. We are planning a trip in October of this year, and are paying for it with our AP discount. It is costing way more than what we "saved".

Welcome aboard fellow canadian, Tiger926. I understand the exchange rate anxiety. We live in Guelph. We own 2 contract each 150 points and we kept one and sold one back. I guess you'd say we're fifty-fifty. Sure could use some more points now. Seriously thinking of buying more. Both our contracts are at BCV and would like to get more points there, but they are really hard to find. Canadian Tom

Welcome Home!

We sold our points back on the main contract, but we immediately did an add on for 50 points and we squeaked in a quick vacation and used those points!

why? you can rent points for less than that if you need more.

we bought 4 years ago, and took the $10 for selling back half our points (the most they did at the time) and never regretted it.

CONGRATULATIONS 'N' WELCOME HOME! :bounce:

We didn't have an option when we purchased our first points back in '97. I would say you did the right thing by banking those points.

We sold our points back. But then we had less than 6 months before we got the next allotment of points and we were not going back until 7 months.

You might consider selling then back and if you find that you need more points later, either add-on or rent additional points.

Good Luck!

I bought 200 points twice and never wanted to sell back my points because in less then 6 months after buying I had double the points. No need to sell for less then the price of a vacation.

Tiger, you definitely did the right thing. If you take the $5 discount and keep the points, you can still rent those points out for this year, if you are not going to use them, for another $10. If you do that, you will actually be $5 a point ahead of the $10 sell back offering, and can use that money to pay down on your contract if you don't want to bank them for next year or need them this year.

Congratulations and Welcome Home!

We kept our points when we bought BCV from Disney and put them to use straight away. Our guide made our first points reservation when we put down the deposit.

We just bought last week, and got a Dec UY. The nice thing about that is we got Dec 03 UY points as well as getiing Dec 04 points, but maint won't start until Jul. So essentially we got 2 yrs points for 1/2 yrs maint. Anyway, to your question on the MB discount. They offered us the $5 off per point (not MB), or we could take advantage of MB and get $10 off (and seel back first years points. Netting it out, we would only have gottent an extra $5 per point discount but lost the first year's points - not a good deal for us at least.

We haven't gotten any closing documents yet. We also plan to charge the purchase.

Thanks.

Brian.
