We had a GREAT trip :) It was definitely hot while we were threre but that was okay. Here's a quick breakdown of what we found during this one:

Halloween:
This was our third trip during the halloween season. Either I've gotten very used to it or there is much less theming and merch. I think there is less though. California Adventure had almost no theming. The only theming we saw was Duffy The Disneybear set up next to Ariel's Grotto with some pumpkins in a pumkin costume. Disneyland seemed to have less than I remember as well. But oddly enough I was kind of happy because I haven't seen the park "normal" for years.

The merch was great. They had these awesome light up Jack necklaces that change expression, very cool. We ended up getting a really cute Trick or Treat sign for our front door. There were still quite a few costumes available. The merch that was brought out for the Halloween party on Friday night was still there on Saturday during regular hours.

The party was great. We got way way way too much candy. Saw lots of villains at the hub, but we didn't stop because we just wanted CANDY!!! (well our kids did) We got enough I'm going to thin it out by about half and use it on Halloweeen...it's absurd how much there was. We also saw some rarer characters. Phineas & Ferb were out at the end of the treat line in innovations, and Rabbit was out in Critter County. It was a highlight of our trip. We didn't watch the fireworks or the parade since our youngest was incredibly timid the entire trip, and it would have scared him.

Paradise Pier Hotel:
It was a really nice hotel. I actually think after staying here and the Grand that in terms of location it's probably the best of the three. If you go out the front door you can cut through the grand. With the way the rooms are set up at the Grand & the PPH I am actually not sure we had a longer walk from our room at PPH than our room at the grand. The Grand in many ways felt like the massive Vegas hotels, PPH felt smaller and more intimate. Then if you go out the backdoor you end up right at the opposite end of Downtown Disney next to the hat at the entrance to DLH, then you can hop on the monorail to Disneyland. While it is far away from the main gate it's got two closer options to get into the parks so I really think it is wonderfully located.

The pool was great. I know there has been some complaining about this pool but I loved it and so did my kids. The slide was a big hit, it doesn't go into a main pool so there wasn't any need to demonstrate ability to swim. There was also a small kiddie pool that was about a foot deep so I could relax in a pool chair while my four year old happily splashed around.

They handled issues really well. We had to switch rooms on the second night. The playpen in the closet stunk of urine :crazy2: and even after they removed it the closet still smelled, so we asked to move. We ended up with a very low level view of DCA, which was fine. We also had a cake we ordered go missing and they tracked it down for us and didn't charge us.

Valet fee $22 NOT $17/night as I've seen quoted.

Overall I'd absolutely stay here again.

Carsland:
Very cool. Radiator Springs Racers was fun. It did scare the poop out of my four year old who spent the ride with his face in my lap digging his nails into my arm. Frank set him off and it was downhill from there. The rest of us realy enjoyed it. I LOVED the flying tires, my husband thought they were dumb and hated them; I like the cheesy rides though. The tractor one was cute & fun. They have tons of neat cars stuff there. The view at night was amazing, we ate at Flo's at night and it was really nice and yummy!!

Mickey's Toon Town Madness:
We didn't book a package, I have an AP and used that discount instead. In an old thread I saw somebody had some luck buying the ticket book from the Walt Disney Travel office in downtown Disney, so I tried & succeeded. It was $10 per book and it came with a pin & landyard coupon, priority seating to the shows, MMTM vouchers, and shopping pass thing. The office is located around the corner from Earl of Sandwich (so not close to being finished) towards PPH.

MMTTM tself was okay. I actually think the line to see Mickey was longer during the MMTTM than the rest of the day. BUT Daisy & Donald were out (not together) and Chip & Dale were out together. It was good fun, and we wanted to do it before it disapears at the end of the year.

Food:
Oh the food lol. I gotta say my big take away was anything with corn is good. We went to Cafe Orleans, Carthay Circle, Carnation Cafe, and four character meals. Carthay is wonderful. We were seated next to the pass through so we got to watch them call the orders. Just a warning, their drinks are STRONG :upsidedow ....It was nap time after that one. The seating for WOC was great, we got there half an hour ahead of the show and we were standing behind the handicapped benches.

The other great place we found that wasn't there last time was the Holly Jolly bakery. SO yummy!! The grilled cheese was great, actually everything was. We almost passed it over thinking "meh just sandwiches" and I'm so glad we didn't.

Fantasmic!:
Like every other time I've been in that area before Fantasmic it's chaos. While I was waiting to check in for my tickets they had the line going into the crowd so we were getting pushed, stepped, and got a good reminder why we were paying LOL. People were yelling at each other for crushing kids and it was literally pedestrian gridlock two hours out from the show. I had to shield my son in his stroller because people saw the gap in the crowd and were trying to step over him. When my husband finally showed up at 8pm, my older son imediatly said "I have to pee"...........it took them 25 minutes to get from the check in booth next to the food card by the Mark Twain River Boats, to the bathroom with no line in NOS, and back. It was INSANE. My husband said he saw some guy screaming at his wife because she had no idea it would be this crowded. I was so glad not to be battling that crowd this time. At nine it did calm down, granted we were sitting and not paying any attention to the crowd control nightmare behind us.

The seating was wonderful. We got in line for check in around 7:10 I think, and we got front row no problem. The view was good, the food was good, the service was good. IMO after trying to see it by coming two to three hours early in past years and failing combined with the fact that we got seats instead of concrete & a waiter it was WELL worth the $230. If you can afford it, do it.

Driving
We drove from Vancouver Island and I know a lot of people wonder what the actual costs on that are, so here it is! We took two nights on the way down, didn't need to at all so that first night is a luxury.

Day One:
We left on the 5pm ferry to Horseshoe Bay (Vancouver BC) drove that night until we got to Mount Vernon Washington.
Costs:
Ferry $0 (we had passes)
Gas $50
Hotel $169 (this was optional, we wanted to shop lol)

Day Two:
We left around 9am and stopped in Yreka at the Holiday Inn Express around 6pm.
Costs:
Gas 150
Hotel 126

Day Three:
We left around 8 am and arrived at PPH at 6pm
Costs:
Gas $75

On the way back we only stopped once for the night.

Day one:
We left at 8:30 am and drove until 10pm. We made it to Springfield Oregon.
Costs:
Gas 163
Hotel 104

Day Two
We left at 8:30 and got to the Twassen Ferry in time for the 3:15 boat home.
Costs:
Gas $50
Ferry again $0 due to passes

So total cost for the drive was $488 in gas and $399 in hotels ($169 we didn't need to spend either) so our total for the drive was just under $900 for the four of us. Not too shabby and we didn't have to worry about weight limits on the flight home because I like to shop! We also didn't have to worry about paying to park our car for the week or renting another one :) The other benefit to driving is we stopped at a couple Targets on the way down, signed up for the Red Card credit card, bought Disney gift cards with the 5% off, paid that off and it posted at midnight, repeated the next day and saved another $75.

Thanks, TheZue, for the recap!

I really like the PPH after staying there so many times - and not only have I gotten used to the walk from the PPH through the GCH lobby, I have actually come to enjoy it! I like starting my days that way when I'm staying onsite - especially if it's a crisp December morning or something.

The PPH also has my favorite of the hotel Christmas trees during the holiday season - most people like the GCH tree better, but I am a PPH tree fan!

It's interesting that you didn't mind fewer decorations in Disneyland. I've been keeping tabs on decorations in both parks every year - I like to observe what's been added in and what's been taken down each year. Halloween Time as an overall season has definitely been scaled back little by little, every year, in little ways. Even at its peak, Halloween Time was never up to the level of the holiday season in terms of overall immersion, but now it is even less so.

I do like "normal" Disneyland, obviously - that was the version of the park I grew up with, so how can I not love it? But, if I am making a special trip to DLR specifically to enjoy the Halloween season, I want to be fully immersed in Halloween-ness! I don't want less of it; I want more of it!

I've heard (though it is not official) that next year there is a good possibility we may begin to once again see some Halloween decorations in DCA. This year, apparently the powers that be wanted to keep DCA as is for as long as possible, to maintain the focus on the new lands for a bit longer - until the holidays, of course, when CL and BVS will be decorated!

What other kinds of things do they have at the Jolly Holiday Bakery?

Great TR.Sounds like you had a great time! Just one question....what is happening to MTTMM at the end of the year?

Sherry if I was making a special trip it would have been annoying for sure. I almost wondered if they weren't trying to slow down the demand a bit. The parks sure were full last week. Wednesday was insane, they extended the hours. But for all the talk of how "slow" Saturdays are now, I have to disagree. It was the same old nuts Disneyland Saturday.

A couple other things I wanted to mention:

Disney Junior:

Don't expect much Disney Junior merch. All they had was a small selection of Jake products you can get anywhere. No Handy Manny, No Mickey Mouse Clubhouse stuff, No Doc McStuffins. There was an OSO plush. But seriously disapointing to my four year old.

Character Meals:

We did them ALL except Ariel's.

Plazza Inn was INSANE, in a good way. We saw Chip, Dale, Herbert (penguin from Mary Poppins), Honest John and the Cat from Pinnochio (who locked my son outside LOL), Eyeore, Pluto, Rabbit, White Rabbit, Minnie, Fairy Godmother, Hook...it was crazy. Food was good, this was by far the best. We got there at 10am saw most of them, but there were so many that there was no way we'd see them all. We got there at 10am and stayed until 11:30 to see Hook.

PCH grill: Also really really good. We were there right at 7am and we saw all the characters within 20 minutes. Again really good food. We saw Stitch, Mickey, Minnie, Daisy, and Pluto.

Storytellers:
Very low key, but we knew that. We only saw a few characters. Both bears from brother bear, Chip, the raccon from Pocahontas, and Turk was there. Again good food, good coffee. It's nice but not a must do.

Goofy's:
I hate to say this because this used to be my favorite, but every time we go it gets worse. We were there for an hour and a half and saw 1 character outside of Goofy. It was my son's birthday and we saw 1. There was also a screw up with the cake we ordered from Vacation Planning for our room and it was sent to Goofy's kitchen and they said nothing about it being there, so when we got back to our room and the cake wasn't there we had to search for it. They brought out a cupcake, but said nothing about there being a cake there for us. Food wasn't as good as I remember it. We won't be back, because like I said it has consistantly been going downhill each time we've gone since 2005.

Thanks for sharing!
I love Flo's at night for dinner too! They have wine... a plus too!

Happy you had a nice trip!

Lori

I am going to disneyland for the first time in 2 weeks, but being a former cast member, I have been to disney world a million times. What are some "Must-sees" for someone who hasn't been?

Can you tell me more about this? What shows do you get priority seating to and what kind of goodies can you get with this book?

Looks like we were there around the same time. We also did Surf's Up and Goofy's but had the opposite experience! I guess you just never know. We also did F! dessert seating. Did you go Sat or Sun? We might have crossed pahs there too. We did F! on Sat.:goodvibes

We did Saturday at nine :) we probably did cross paths!!

Great TR with lots of useful tips...thanks! We will be driving down from Seattle, leaving next Sunday...I can't wait! We will spend 2 nights in hotels on the way down as well. Your cost information about the drives are very helpful. Gas doesn't seem TOO outrageous...what do you drive?

Glad you had such a magical happy time. I'm SO ready for my turn! :drive:

You get for pages of vouchers 1) mickey's toon town madness 2) one for a pin and lanyard, we got cars pins 3) the shopping pass for somewhere offsite and 4) the priority seating for the shows, I think it was Aladdin, turtle talk, tough to be a bug, and something else that I can't remember.

I haven't been to WDW so I can't compare, but for me I wouldn't miss pirates, the Matterhorn, California screaming, and of course cars land.

Oh and about the Matterhorn, neither of us found it more painful. I actually liked it, I was all prepared to be disappointed but its still one of my faves!

A 2004 FWD V6 Sienna, certainly not the lightest vehicle on gas. We did use gas buddy to find cheaper stations and that did help a little. And honestly compared to Canada (or anywhere else in the world) American gas is cheap lol!! Ours at home works out to $6 a gallon and it was higher a few months ago...anything under $4 is downright exciting, our usual cost to fill the van is around $110, the $75 was a nice change.

Thanks for the summary! When did you actually sit down for Fantasmic? We are doing the package on Sat. and haven't done it before so I am worried about the chaos.

We sat down at 8:30...they say you can leave after you check in but considering it took my husband and son 25 minutes to get to the bathroom and back when it was normally a two minute walk that seemed pointless and I'd just be prepared to hang out. just be prepared for it to take longer to get there than you expect, I intended to be there by seven, instead it was around ten after just because everything is so clogged.

Wow I guess we do have cheap gas. Sure doesn't feel like it! But I like the freedom of having a car and hubby and I both enjoy a road trip, so I'm glad we're driving vs flying. We like taking little side trips too, like to Vegas or San Francisco, so we'll figure that out as we go along.

We've done the F! dessert package before and its nice, but I wish you could get seat assignments when you buy the tickets. Having to wait in line for the seat assign and then come back to actually get your seat kinda bugged me. This trip we will go to the 2nd show, hanging out in Critter Country until the first show is finished. We'll try and get a standing place right behind the seating on the ground area. The cold hard concrete doesn't work for us. Too old I guess. :p:

Glad you had a good time! We just stayed at the PPH for the first time too, and I think we like it the best out of the three. DLH and GCH are so big, and we really liked the smaller feel of the hotel. Our kids also loved the pool, and spent a lot of time there because it was HOT! We'll definitely stay again.

Great report! But now I am a little worried about F! We will be there oct 14-20 and were planning to go to F! On Sunday the 14th, early show as is already a little past kids bedtime. But hearing about past failed attempts getting there a couple of hours ahead has me scared. Wondering if I should find a way to budget the $ for the dessert seating or skip it? We missed it on our last trip in 2009 because we weren't in the parks on the weekend. This time the 14th is our only chance as the 20th is travel home day.
