We just returned from a 9 day trip, staying at SSR with me (recovering from a trimalleolar fracture this winter) DD age 18 who was recently diagnosed with gluten intolerance and DH. Thanks to everyone who replied to my posts over the months we had a great time.
1. We bought a transport wheelchair, weighs about 23 lbs. It worked really well to wheel me into the parks and then we would park it in different areas and I could walk. We brought a lock but did not use it very often and never had a problem,we put a luggage tag on it and a Disney scarf. And it is red! No problem folding it up and carrying it on the buses, took up less room than a stroller!
2. I was able to get in and out of all rides, even with my weak ankle, just had DH give me a hand out. I walked on to all rides except Splash and BTMRR because the stairs and inclines are very hard on my ankle. For those using the handicap entrance was fine.
3. We were amazed at the treatment DD received about her gluten intolerance. Our first meal was at Electric Umbrellla and when DD ordered her burger without a bun, the cast member taking our order asked why and then had a manager come talk to her. They had gluten free buns!
4. The chefs at Flying Fish and Olivia's both came out and spend quite a bit of time going over the menu. The chef at Olivia's even sent out gluten free bread, lightly toasted, for her since she could not have the pineapple/coconut bread they serve.
5. We did the Keys to the Kingdom tour and before the tour when we were ordering our lunches, the tour guide(Mark)heard us say DD is gluten intolerant and advised of her options.
6. SSR Artist's Palette was great. Chef came out and as she went to get things during the week, chatted with her and even gave her a free gluten free rice krispie treat.
I'd be happy to answer any questions. Again thanks to all...we had a great time!
