Just back...tips for families

I had several questions before I left (even though I wasn't a newbie.) I thought I would write down a few tips I found useful and some things I discovered on my own...

First of all, we are a family with 4 little kids (7, 6, 3, and 17 months.) These tips/discoveries will especially apply to similar families. We also were there in an off-season.

These first few are well known but can't be said enough...
EMH is well worth it. 7am EMH is less busy than 9am EMH even if the early time is on a weekend.
Arrive 45 minutes before opening to be one of the first in line at the security check point. After security, be sure to get in a line at the gate that specifically says Magic Morning at DL or has a green light at DCA.
If you're staying at GCH, the same timing applies for lining up at security. If you're not in line pretty early, you stand a better chance of getting in faster at the main gate of DCA. EMH at DCA is for onsite hotel guests only.

If heading for Radiator Springs Racers (and why wouldn't you) if you go left from the GCH entrance you will merge with the main crowds but still be a little faster if you're one of the first to enter. (If you go to the right from the GCH entrance it takes longer but there are no crowds. It only makes sense if you have someone with you who has a scooter and therefore difficulty getting through the crowd.) Stick to the far right especially as you enter down the street in Cars Land!!!
Get a child swap ticket from the cast member at the entrance of the RSR line. Then send one adult and small children to wait in the RSR FP line (or have them ride Toy Story Mania first then return to FP line before the main crowds are let in.) The other adult(s) and kids who are tall enough to ride RSR should ride right away. Afterward, ride Luigi's and Mater's if you desire, then head over to Paradise Pier and go on TSM until your heart is content. There will be no waiting until the the park officially opens. As soon as the park opens (or before if you're tired of TSM), go on Screamin', Mickey's Fun Wheel, and Goofy's. Then you'll still have time to go on Soarin' then Tower of Terror without much wait at all.
You can do everthing else at you leisure. Collect more FPs as your window opens up. Always get a child swap pass when you can.
Eat an early lunch. Take an afternoon nap/swim break. Return to the parks to use your FPs/child swap passes in the early evening. Retire early to rest up for the next day's EMH!

In case you don't know how "child swap" passes work, you ask the CM (cast member) at the entrance to most rides for a child swap pass if you have a little one who does not meet the height requirement. The child and other adult must be present. You CAN get a child swap pass even when you are using a fast pass. The child swap pass is good for 2 people. They are very strict on that with RSR and some other rides. On other rides like Star Tours, they let you take as many kids as you want with you. On Luigi's they let my husband take 2 small kids with him since they would all fit in one tire anyway. Child Swap passes are the key to an enjoyable day for both kids and their parents! Using child swap and FPs and early morning strategies we had an awesome time!

World of Color:
A good show! During off season it is certainly not essential to get reserved areas by purchasing the picnic or eating at Wine Country or Carthay Circle; FPs are available for viewing areas ALL day long! BUT if you plan to eat at Carthay Circle anyway (we were), all you have to order is either a dessert or an appetizer with your entree to qualify for the reserved tickets. We did not have to order appetizer or desserts with the kids meals to qualify. DH and I split an appetizer and dessert and it was perfect. I was surprised to see the Wine Country reserved seating was closer than the Carthay Circle, but it was fine and we probably didn't get as wet (only a little mist.) Arrive 30 minutes early to get a seat on the stairs while you wait for the show to start. Everyone stands once the show starts.

Halloween Party:
It was fine, but not nearly as good as MNSSHP at WDW. We went on a Tuesday and it was the least busy day in DL in the morning that I had seen all week. A couple of hours before the party started it was packed! It was packed for the whole party. We didn't intend to do rides anyway. If you want pictures with the characters...do this FIRST! The only "special" one I saw was Mickey and Minnie in their Halloween costumes. The rest of the meet and greets I saw were for characters you could see in the park anytime with MUCH less waiting! These were disappointing. I thought we would see villians or rare characters like at MNSSHP.
The candy lines are long in the beginning of the night but less busy later. We still hit some of the less busy lines early since there wasn't much else to do. (The character lines were too long especially for what they were and my kids didn't want to go to the dance parties.) My kids likes collecting the candy even though we will never eat it all!
We sought out a spot near Small World for the parade. It started near there and wasn't nearly as crowded as Main Street. The parade was fine but again nothing special like MNSSHP. I had already expected that. Then we hot a few more candy trails, took the train around the park and returned to the Small World area for the fire works. Where was everybody? The place was deserted! I thought I must be misinformed about it being a good area to watch the fireworks. When it started I was not disappointed. This was the best part of the entire evening! It was a great place to watch fireworks...not even anybody's head in my way. There was a show to match the fireworks display on the Small World building too. What a gem of a secret this turned out to be! We then made our way out of the park slowly.
It was fine to do once. Seeing everyones costumes was neat. The fireworks were good. It just can't compare to MNSSHP at WDW.

Any other questions? Hope this helps someone.

Edited to add a few other comments...
RSR is not always open right away during EMH. (Because it breaks down a lot!) Once they didn't tell us until we were following Mater down the street at the entrance to Carsland. They wouldn't let anyone line up until it was running. DH decided to wait in the FP line while the rest of us rode Luigi's then headed to TSM.

Once they told us at the ticket booth at GCH that RSR would be delayed 30 minutes. We headed to TSM again only to find TSM wasn't open yet either! It took about 30 minutes for that to get up and running. It wasn't technical difficulties; they were just getting a late start probably since it's not slammed first thing in the morning anymore. Annoying. This morning it was just my oldest son and myself, so we didn't bother waiting for the RSR FPs. We went to RSR shortly after park opening and decided to try the single rider line. There wasn't a sole in it! We walked right on the ride. The disadvantage is you won't be seated together, but we actually were even in the same car (on in front and one in back.) I highly recommend single rider line if you don't mind being split up.

Don't be surprised if the ticket gates don't open up right at the stated EMH time. Several times we were waiting a few extra minutes or even longer. When we were at the GCH gate, we wondered if the main gate was let in on time, but it never was. They do synch up the opening at all gates even if they don't let you in on time. Again though, just annoying after waiting in line for 45 to 60 minutes already. Perhaps there is a reason I do not understand, but it just seems run poorly.

Wow, thanks for the great tips!

How much time did it take you to get those child swap passes as your first stop during EMH? Do I understand correctly that you did that first, then either went to RSR FP line or TSM? It seems one would want to go to the RSR FP line right before park opens to the public so you have time to do all the other rides before EMH ends.

Thanks again!

I have 4 kids very similar in age to yours (8.7, 3 & 19 months) and I agree with almost everything you say.

The only thing I will say is that we actually did see a lot of villains at the Halloween Party on Main Street. And they were villains we would't normally see. We also saw Phineas and Ferb in Innovations during the party.

We didn't stay on site, so no EMH for us, so our approach to RSR was to hit DCA on a non-EHM day. We were at the gates about 45 min before opening, they let us in 30 minutes before opening, DH went the FP line (about 8th in line) and I went with the kids to the regular rope drop. He was able to meet us at Luigi's, so we did that & Maters before heading over TSM, Screamin', Goofy's etc. We came back and used the FP and child swap later. I had read about the wide right and was tempted to use it, but we ran a huge risk of it being down and not being able to get FP then. I did however recommend it to a friend and they were the first family on the ride.

Thanks for the tips.

There is one thing that I would caution though, we talked to a CM while we were waiting for World of Color and she said that the FPs were gone by 10:30 am that morning and had run out every day that week (Oct 15-19). I wonder if more people are in DCA due to Carsland and then want to see World of Color. Anyway I would recommend getting a FP early since it doesn't affect your other FPs anyway.

Regarding your Mickey's Halloween Party experience, the villains were in Town Square. They ride in a horse drawn carriage and do the meet & greets/photo ops there. Also, IASW mall is not crowded for fireworks because most people are at the hub or on Main Street. The show is meant to be viewed from the front of the castle (and this really is the best viewing), but with the projections on the Small World building, IASW really is a nice place for less crowded viewing.

It just takes a couple seconds. You get the child swap pass at the entrance of any ride where there is a height requirement. 2 adults and the child who does not meet the height all need to be present. The adult who is waiting with the child receives the pass (for RSR and most rides, although the system is a bit different for a cople of rides) then can go on TSM or whatever and get in RSR FP line before the general entry time.

Yes, if you plan to go, get FPs early. We never worried about it because we knew we were going to eat at Carthay Circle the day we wanted to see WOC. BTW, if you want reserved seating for the early show (if there are 2 shows) you have to dine there between certain times and other times for the later show. So be sure to look it up.

Yeah, I unserstand the hub is the desired area, but I REALLY enjoyed being away from the tremendous crowds and seeing it by Small World. I highly recommend it. I don't see any negative, only lots of positives.

I really liked that we had 45 minutes between the early parade and the fireworks to go to more ToT stations and ride the train without worrying about saving our spot too. MUCH better than just sitting/standing in the hub for an hour reserving your spot.

If DH has a FP for RSR and we go to the FP line with my ODS (tall enough to ride) and my YDS (not tall enough to ride), DH could go on the ride with my ODS and I would get a child swap pass and wait with my YDS. Once my DH and ODS are done with RSR, I could use the child swap pass and go with my ODS?

Is this correct?

What if I have 3 FP for RSR? Could I conceiveably get a child swap 3 times?

Thanks!

Yes, it is correct; and yes you can get a childswap pass everytime someone gets in line.

For us, we got 5 FPs with our 5 family members who have tickets. I would use 3 (for me and 2 kids to go on) while DH got a swap ticket. The swap ticket is good for him and 1 kid. Then later I would use 2 FPs (for me and 1 kid) while DH got another swap ticket to use with the other kid later.

Will my ODS be able to ride with either me or DH without a FP? Or will he need one everytime? I'm just wondering how strict they are about it.

There are 3 ticketed members of our family so I was going to get 3 FP for RSR. DH and I were going take turns taking him on, but if we can get a child swap everytime we use a FP, even better.

Thanks.

You are an angel posting this, it has been frustrating me as I have thought through exactly how it will work. One more question though. Do the child swap and FP go in the same line? So in theory if I get a child swap and then come back with DS8 and DS4 I could use a baby swap and a fastpass and get all three of us on together? If that makes sense. :confused3

I agree that the lack of crowds at IASW is a definite advantage to that location, but for others reading this who have never seen Halloween Screams, I think it is important to note that the show from IASW is not the exact same as from the hub. For those who want to know the difference, check YouTube videos to see the show from the hub. At IASW, there will be no floating balloon for the head projections (those will be projected on the IASW bldg. itself), no fire effects, and less depth to the actual fireworks, since you will only be seeing the ones shot from behind ToonTown. It can get a little hard looking behind you at the castle fireworks and then back to IASW. Also, with smaller crowds, there will be less audience reaction/participation. Overall, IASW is a fine place to watch the show, but for someone who wants to get the best view of the show the way it was meant to be seen, then the hub is the better option.

Both you (or your husband) and your son will need a fastpass to get in the line.

Yes the child swap and fastpass go in the same line. On our trip there were 4 adults, 1 child tall enough to ride, and an infant. We got 5 fastpasses, one for each ticket. 3 adults and the child would ride using fastpasses (1 adult would wait with the baby). We would then use the rider swap for 1 adult and his/her guest, and use the last fastpass for a third person to ride with them (2 adults would stay with the baby). I hope that makes sense :)

On our recent trip, our little DD3 was too short for a few of the rides we wanted to do but still needed a park ticket as she just turned 3. Technically, you may be required to take the shorty child/baby to the CM, but I didn't know this. We parked her in her stroller with one of the adults in the stroller parking while the rest of the party queued. No problems getting the baby swap card without her present.

To use baby swap card, you enter in the fp line.

We were shocked at how two people could ride using the baby swap card. RSR was our first time using it. Had I known how the swap works, I would have used our fps differently. We had 5 tickets (our fam of 4 and family friend) so I got 5 fps. Family friend stayed with the little one while DH, DS, and I queued in the return line, got baby swap card, and rode. Three fps were used. Then, I stayed with DD while DH, DS, and family friend rode with baby swap card. The card allowed two of them in without using the fp so only 1 fp used that trip. At that point we had used 4 of our 5 fps. DH didn't want to go by himself or let DS go by himself so he gave the remaining fp away to another guest.

Knowing what I know now about the swap card, I would have done this with our 5 fps:

1. DH, DS, and I ride getting swap card from CM first. 3 fp used.
2. Friend and DS ride using the swap card. 0 fp used.
3. DH and DS ride getting swap card from CM first. 2 fp used.
4. I would ride with one of the group using the swap card. 0 fp used.

All 5 fp used and many more rides this way! Next time!!

Both you (or your husband) and your son will need a fastpass to get in the line.

This is where I am getting confused.....I will have 3 FP. If all 3 of us will need a FP to get in the line to get a child swap then what is the point? Why would I get a child swap when I have a FP?

If me, DH, older DS and younger DS go to the FP line -how many FP will we need for DH and older DS to get on the ride and for me to get a child swap?

I'm sorry my answer wasn't very clear. Getting the child swap will allow you and your son to ride using 2 fastpasses, and later for your husband and your son to ride using the rider swap ticket. Basically a rider swap is like a fastpass good for 2 people.

If no one wants to ride alone, there really is no need for the third fastpass. But, if someone does want to ride alone using that last fastpass, you can pick up a second rider swap. Does that make sense?

In my opinion, until Disneyland starts enforcing fastpass times, the best way to utilize your fastpasses so no one has to ride alone, is to get 2 fastpasses to a ride (let say Star Tours so I don't get us all confused), and use the third ticket to get a fastpass for a different ride (let say Space Mountain.) When you are able to get more fastpasses, get one from Space Mountain again, and get 2 from a third ride (let's say Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.)

Now for riding time. Have 2 people use the fastpasses to Star Tours and pick up a rider swap. Use the rider swap for 2 people to ride Star Tours again (doesn't have to be right away, you can hold onto it until later if you want.) Then use 2 fastpasses to ride Space Mountain (these fastpasses will have 2 different return times, but until they start enforcing that, you're fine,) and pick up a rider swap so 2 can ride Space Mountain later. Finally go to Big Thunder Mountain, use faspasses for 2 people, and pick up a rider swap for 2 to use later.

Did that help?

The child swap pass is good for 2 people. When you go through the FP line, you and your child will both need a FP. So with 3 FP, you and your child can ride once using 2 FPs, then your DH and child can ride once with the child swap pass, leaving one FP left over. One of you can use the FP and get another child swap at the same time, but 2 people cannot get in the FP line with only 1 FP. When you use the child swap ticket again though 2 people can use it. Hope that is more clear than it sounds! :rotfl:
