We just got back from an excellent trip to the dark side, Friday through Memorial Day.

Some tips and musings:

1. Musing - We planned the trip about 3 weeks ago. How liberating to not have to make a single ADR, FP+ reservation, and simply go! I don't even like the Uni rides as much as Disney's rides, but we had a blast, and part of it was due to the ability to just do/see what we wanted, when we wanted.

2. Tip - As indicated in this thread:
http://www.disboards.com/threads/ex...rsal-orlando-tickets-for-annual-pass.3453855/
After you enter the parks the first time with your AmEx tickets purchased with points, you can upgrade them to APs and they will apply the full gate value.

3. Musing - However, as indicated in this thread:

Be prepared to wait a little when you first go through with your new AP. We had to re-do the finger scan, and it would not take it, so it had to be re-set. We had to show IDs and a manager had to come over and write down the number of our APs. They told us it was a problem in their system and it should not happen and that they were taking our numbers down to fix it. We left Orlando after that morning, so I don't know if they indeed fixed it or not.

4. Tip - Park-to-park tickets worth it? - I've seen this asked multiple items. Is the Train to Hogwarts sufficiently interesting to pay the increased "hopper" price? What about the flexibility to go to the two parks? Well, this is my opinion, but if you are looking to save some money somewhere, and you have a large group where it's a larger chunk of change to get the hopper option, I would skip it. The train is exactly that - a train. You see a short train trip from Hogwarts to London and back. It's not the most clever or exciting of the HP features in Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley. And there's always a line. A.very.long.line. We hopped on one of our days, and it can be a long, tiring day if you try to do both parks. I think one park at a time, with some rest time is more doable.

5. Tip - Are Onsite Early Morning Hours Worth it? - Right now, only IoA HP has the EMH. Which means everyone is at Forbidden Journey (FJ) in that hour. Lines were longer than later in the day. Also, Flight of the Hippogriff had a much longer Express Pass line between 9:00 and 10:00 than later in the day, as the onsite guests from PBH, HRH, and RPR all seem to hit Hippogriff right after FJ. Not sure how it's affected if there's alternating EMH.

6. Tip - Is the Express Pass Feature Worth it? - I think it is, but I will say that we used it much less than our previous visit. We spent a lot more time in the Harry Potter areas, and there's no Express Pass for Forbidden Journey, the new Gringott ride, nor the train. Also, these areas get very congested. If HP is your focus, I would not sweat not having the Express Pass.

7. Musing - The HP lands are absolutely brilliant. I'm a huge Disney fan, but I feel Uni totally kicked it up a notch above Disney with HP. My DD8 loved doing the magic tricks and spells with her ($50) wand.

8. Musing - HRH was brilliant. We loved it at least as much as PBH. Food at the Kitchen for breakfast was great, as was room service. I liked the rooms and the hotel feel more than Disney, but I did miss the balcony, larger closets, and day bed found in many deluxe Disney hotels. I wish Disney would give some kind of park edge (beyond the transportation option) to its deluxe resorts.

9. Tip - My last tip is the best one and the one I wished I would have known about. It turns out the Uni will honor FL AP rates for GA, but only if you do it in-person. There's no way to do this online. I paid full price online because I did not know about this, but was able to get the special rate when I upgraded my DH, DS, DD.

10. Tip - Weekend much more crowded than Memorial Day. I think many locals come for the weekend.

That's all my musings and tips!

We also just returned from our first trip this weekend, and I agree with most everything above. We stayed at PBR and had an amazing room (check-in clerk said it was her favorite room)

sounds like a great trip!!

UO has given GA residents the same ticket rates as Floridians for some years.

i get the discount by calling UO.

Yeah, I wish they'd do it for Alabama residents, as well. I live less than a half mile from the Florida line.

i have a friend that says the same thing......lives in alabama and minutes to reach the florida border.

I don't know about you, but I just got back from a long weekend trip and I felt the express lines were the longest I have ever experienced. I have been going Memorial Day weekend for 10+ years staying at HRH. I didn't find myself riding certain rides over and over like I have in the past. I still had a great trip but couldn't imagine not having express pass. There were times in the park where every ride was 60 mins plus. I will say we had great weather and enjoyed the pool very much. I may wait out going back until the new rides are open.

Clearly, I need to be hanging out in this forum more frequently!

At Splash Falls (or whatever the log ride is called), we were quoted 40 minutes with Express Pass or 70 without. Either way, it was too long. We left, went to the pool and came back after dinner. Rides were much shorter after 8:30 pm.

We are just finishing our first trip (sitting at MCO waiting on a delayed flight). We really enjoyed HRH. The walk to the parks was nice. I enjoyed not having to wait on busses. We spent yesterday afternoon at the pool and it was great! It may have been just because it was Memorial Day, but it seemed they were not allowing pool hopping. There was a sign by the pool gate saying it was for Hard Rock guests only and when we walked through the gate we were asked to verify we were staying at Hard Rock by showing our room key. I did overhear a girl who was manning the towel station saying as we walked by that it wasn't right how crowded it was when guests there were paying upwards of $400 bucks a night. (I was not thanks to the awesome tips I found out on this board!).

I did notice the express pass lanes were not quite as quick as I was expecting by what I had read here on these boards. I am assuming it was due to crowds. We waited a good 20 minutes plus for every ride with express. It seemed at the mummy we waited just 5 or so minutes less than stand by each time. I was so glad we had them though or the lines would have been so bad, we likely would not have gotten to ride anything!

The Harry Potter areas are absolutely amazing. We loved them and those rides so much. They were by far our favorite. With early entry and the tip I read here of waiting til late in the evening we never waited more than 30 minutes for them and rode Gringotts 3 times and Forbidden Journey twice over 2 days.

I upgraded my 3 day park to park ticket from undercover tourist to a power pass for $10.65, so I definitely plan to be back. Next time I will probably go solo. I had my 2 younger cousins with me this time, so didn't get to take my time and take in the details like I enjoy!

The only negative from my trip is it seems to me there is a lot of walking through the lines that isn't really needed. Also that you can't take an ECV through most of the lines. My mom is having a major foot surgery this summer and we have a late October trip planned to Disney. I was really hoping to take her to Universal as well, but I don't think she will be able to make it there. I'm not sure I would be able to push my larger than me mom through those long lines in a manual wheel chair. Disney is so ECV friendly (my mom had to use one this spring and she could drive it right to the ride vehicle on almost all rides), I was disappointed to see Universal wasn't.

Do you know if they will allow walkers through the line? My dad is taking his ECV but also will have his walker strapped to it. I don't think he could stand in long lines for long periods of time and the walker would allow him to have a seat when he needed.

I know I saw people in line with crutches, so I would think so. A lot of the lines had stairs, but I noticed they had elevators in those places.

We are on the drive home from our first trip!! It was crowded but I guess we were hitting the rides at the right time because we didn't find the waits to be too bad.

We loved having the park to park tickets as we went back and forth a lot. So would definitely do that again. And we liked the train ride. Not enough to only pay the extra for that so do agree with you there.

We didnt have express pass and wondered if it was worth it. I do think we will have it next time. Stayed at Cabana Bay this time but thinking of another resort next trip--loved Cabana Bay by the way.

We enjoyed having the extra hour. The first day dd and dh rode Dragon Challenge twice and we went on Forbidden Journey and breakfast at Three Broomsticks as well as looking around in the shops and taking lots of pictures all within that hour. I did notice that almost everyone was bypassing the dragons and heading straight for forbidden journey and the hippogriff so I am guessing riding the dragons first gave those time to empty out a little.

Rip Ride Rock It (not sure that is exactly the name) was the only really bad wait. I didn't ride but dd did and was exhausted when she came out from the hot and tiring wait. A man that came off right before her said that the CM told him it was due to so many with express pass backing up the regular line. Not sure how correct that was.

I also noticed that there were many groups with the VIP tour guide, which go straight to the front. I wonder if this backed up the other lines too.
