Let me start by saying - OMG! Disneyland is absolutely AMAZING!!

We just returned from a quick (too quick) trip! We arrived last Sunday and returned very early yesterday morning. Our flight into LAX arrived early and we were in the park by noon Sunday. I was very worried about crowd levels as it was both a weekend, and one of the few weekends left for the Diamond Celebration. However, crowds were very manageable! We walked on to almost every single ride, the only line we encountered was for Space, so we just grabbed a FP. Sunday was the most crowded day during our trip, the rest of the time the parks felt very roomy and we were very pleasantly surprised!

As soon as we arrived, we bumped into Goofy - and he asked me to dance! What a great way to start - dancing with Goofy down Main Street! Goofy was the only character we were able to catch in their Diamond outfit, but he was adorable!

I actually super loved the castle, I know it's smaller than Cinderella's, but I think I like Sleeping Beauty's better! We met Aurora outside her castle and then spent the rest of the evening hitting up rides. For comparison: Big Thunder Mountain is my new favorite ride at any Disney Park! We rode that at least 5 times, and twice in the dark, which is even more fabulous! We also liked Space better, although I wonder how much of that is attributed to the Star Wars overlay - we were blown away by it! Splash we felt was better at World, but we did enjoy it here. Pirates of the Caribbean was NO contest! WAY better in Land! Indiana Jones was also a blast! DH's new favorite ride is The Matterhorn, we were super excited to encounter 5 minutes or less wait time every time we rode that one!

We did character dining at Goofy's Kitchen, Plaza Inn, Ariel's Grotto and Storyteller's. DH's favorite was Plaza, although it was difficult to sort out the character rotation - we missed 2 characters completely, but we did see Tigger, Eeyore, Minnie, Capt. Hook, Pinocchio and Chip 'n Dale. It was fun to see so many! Goofy's Kitchen felt similar to Chef Mickey's at World, and I think we both preferred CM. The food was just ok, but the characters were great! My favorite character meal was Storyteller's. I was delighted to see Kenai! I've never seen him and it was such a great time! Chip stole my seat when I ran to the bathroom and Dale tried to walk away with DH's breakfast!

We also did the Paint the Night dinner package at Blue Bayou and that was wonderful! We waited for a waterside table and it was well worth it! We got curb seating for the parade (which was absolutely astounding!) and had no trouble moving up Main Street for the Disneyland Forever fireworks. By the end of the fireworks, I was in tears - it was just beyond amazing!

We also did the World of Color dessert party - also fantastic! It was so nice to be able to sit and enjoy the show! The waitress we had was wonderful, we were offered seconds on every thing and she made sure we had everything we could possibly want before the show started. She even brought us to go boxes after wards.

We stayed at the Disneyland Hotel - LOVED it!!! The beds were like a cloud from heaven and the monorail water slide was so much fun!

The only hiccup we had was on our Sea World day. We had booked tickets and transportation through Disney and it was provided through CA Gray Line. It was a mess! First our bus was almost an hour late, then, without an explanation, we were taken back to the depot and were put on a different bus. Our driver was completely awful. He complained about the passangers as he dropped them off, and used profanity constantly. He stated that "because Sea World **** changed their hours, we would have to be picked up early." Sea World's hours have been the same for at least a week now. We ended up with less than 5 hours park time, which was frustrating since we paid for an entire day...

I'm sorry this is so long! Thank you so much to all of you who helped answer my questions and gave all the great advice on these boards, my trip was perfect thanks to all of your helpful input! If anyone has questions for me I'll be glad to answer them!

Since you booked your Sea World excursion through Disney, I would definitely contact them (and cc CA Gray Line) about the mess up and your driver. That is totally unprofessional behavior and shouldn't be tolerated by that company. I'm sure Disney would not want to refer guests to that company if they knew how guests were treated.
Glad to hear that the rest of your trip was so magical!

What a wonderful trip! You hit all the important things it sounds like and you were rewarded with the magic and charm that can be found in Walt's park.

I agree with kindermouse, I think you did your first visit perfectly. Sea world doesn't count it's not DL. FYI as someone whose first roller coaster was space mountain and has seen all of its versions, it's way better than WDW! If you ever make it back to dl skip goofys kitchen and try steakhouse 55 next door. No characters but still a great experience. Storytellers is better character or better yet go over to do lilo and stitch at paradise pier.

Lilo and stitch is at PP? are they at the surfs up breakfast?

First time with the kids in october...

I'm wondering (as a long time wdw frequenter who doesn't use the "m" word)...are the character meals really worth our time?

We have the Halloween package at blue bayou, Napa (still debating that), storytellers for breakfast, and carthay circle

Any recommendations?

Particularly food quality...as by and large wdw's has fallen and I'm not looking for things more questionable than that...

Planning 1st trip to DL, is Storytellers really better than Goofy's Kitchen? I had heard GK had good character interaction, but if Storyteller's is better... OP mentioned Kenai, I don't recognize that name, can someone tell me who that is? Just curious.

Kenai is from brother bear

As to which is the better character meals...well that is a question with 2 different answers depending on what you value in a character meal. I thought that Goofy's has better/more variety of characters but as a buffet where everything is made en masse and sits on warmers not getting any yummier as it sits I dont think that the food there is the best and Storytellers food was better. For the best Character interaction and variety though you should go to the minnie and friends breakfast at the Plaza Inn as they have the greatest variety of characters.

Napa is incredible! It's the only 5 star restaurant on property. It can get expensive though. I am talking $100 a person. Love blue bayou! As a second favorite. Get the monte cristo. Storytellers is good for breakfast. Don't do carnation for breakfast. The food is just not good anymore. Carthay circle is okay, it's another seasonal menu like Napa. The few times I have gone I just wasn't as impressed.

Character meals to me are not worth it, but my family isn't big on autographs and such. I am more about the food and usually food at character meals are buffet (not my favorite). If you like relaxing and having characters and not waiting in lines storytellers is good food, quieter atmosphere. Goofys kitchen is just loud and food is not good. surfs up in paradise pier is also a quieter atmosphere and food is fresher. Ultimately get early reservations for Minnie at plaza but only if you feel like character meals.

Go has lots of characters but staler buffet food. So yes I would storytellers over gk. Kenyan is the older brother in brother bear. Highly recommend rewatching just for the moose interactions.

Exactly how I feel. Only add surfs up in paradise pier before gk. Food is fresher.

I already sent off an email to guest relations. I am sure they would want to know! But I did make sure to tell them how truly awesome the rest of the trip was!

If you are thinking about character meals to experience the food, I would say no, not with it. That was one complaint DH had about the characer meals. I really didn't eat a whole lot at any of them, but we went to experience the characters. I will say we both super enjoyed BB for both the food and the setting.

Both DH and I liked Storeyteller's more than Goofy. I like the rare characters, and Kenai is one I had never seen before. The characters also spent a LOT more time with us there!

Thank you for the responses...

Characters are obviously more important this time - since we are 3,000 miles from Disneyland and won't be frequenting it...

...but I can't tolerate them mailing in the food. If it's worse than Crystal palace at WDW...not playing. That's one reason why I haven't been to chef mickeys or Cinderella's or akershus in years...it's just overpriced cafeteria with a lot of nonsense screaming/kid parades to take the attention of it.

So storytellers or plaza inn will be the "one hit" if we do one.

I'm still likely to do Napa Rose or steakhouse 55...though with a 7 and 8 year old it might be better to wait on Napa rose...

I appreciate the response/suggestions

FYI: blue bayou in Euro is still my favorite single overall experience at a Disney park...looking forward to it at Disneyland. I've always thought they should have added it in wdw...but it's just s meat market in that park and isn't gonna change as long as people knock each over to go to the selection of bad restaurants...like be our guest.

I am so glad someone else doesn't like be our guest. It was one of my worst Disney experiences ever. Napa food wouldn't be bad for 7 and 8 year old but the time but be a bit long. It's more of a dining experience and you will be there a while. The chairs and room are designed for a quieter meal as well. I think if you were going to pick only one (Napa or steakhouse) go with steakhouse. But definitely do Disney blue bayou. And if you can try cafe Orleans and any monte cristo. I know blue bayou has them too but I just like them better at cafe Orleans. At all costs avoid village haus the food is stale or dirty (I'm talking salad tastes like dirt).

Are you staying at an onsite hotel? If so, then the kids could go to Pinocchio's Workshop while the grownups enjoy Napa Rose! We've done that twice with DS and are planning on taking him with us to NR when we go back in March. Although, unless you are planning on the chef's counter, the meal should not be longer than other TS places such as Blue Bayou. (If you are thinking of the chef's counter, I *highly* recommend it!)

We're staying at Disneyland Hotel as it stands now...may switch to grand Californian...still debating.

Not interested in dumping the kids in pinocchios unless they beg for it...we've done that routine plenty of times in WDW...

We take them to California grill, Jiko, artists point, Citricos all the time...nothing new.

I've done the "chefs table" variation at 4 Disney restaurants...the Victoria and Alberts one was nice...but I think the "elegant Disney dining" thing jumped the shark long ago.
