Just Back....Strange Observance

Yes. And the only requirement for Disney cast members (outside of entertainment, like parades) is that they remove their nametag before they leave property. So I could still go to McDonalds in my (incredibly unflattering) pleated khaki pants and my work shirt, minus a nametag, to go get dinner after I got off work at 1 AM.
:lmao: they should check out Walmart after midnight - it is like Disney zombies invaded it. All glassy eyed, wearing parts of costumes :crazy2:

Still, if it's part of the job, either suck it up or find a new job. Easy enough. Again, no one forces you to work at any given place. And when I was first starting in the OR, I bussed it to the hospital. I made it work.
it is not part of the job.

Some people don't want to see others wearing uniforms. We still don't know if this goes for all uniforms or just Disney's.

But if you go to Walmart, stop at gas stations, drive past bus stops or go anywhere, really, you may see someone else doing those things while wearing a work uniform. It's part of life.

I get up at 4am, leave for work by 5:30 am. Im not going to change my clothes 4 times a day because someone's magic is ruined by my costume being seen outside the gates. What I do on my own time is my business and as long as my name tag is off as my employer requests, frankly its no ones business. Sorry but thats how I feel. Im all about guests while im at work, but off the clock is my time.

I would actually be sent on errands around the property while wearing my costume. A lot of guest service "magic" that we would take care of while on the clock pixiedust:

Yep. These are called runners.
Imagine this:
You're a guest. You've spent all day at the parks, come back to your home resort, either go pick up your packages that were sent through package pick up or get to your room and dump out your belongings. But oh no! Something is wrong! Your snow globe! It's broken!! It's only sold at Animal Kingdom and your well thought out touring plan that you have planned for MONTHS doesn't allow you to return to AK to replace the item. You have rope drop bright and early at HS (TSM FP go fast you know). What are you going to do?! You tell a cast member at your home resort gift shop. This person informs the runner. The runner, in the home resort costume, (at all start big red shirt and bright blue pants) goes to AK, finds that snow globe and makes sure it reaches your hands safely while you enjoy your day doing whatever. So yes, we would walk around in whatever park, trying to keep the magic alive and the guests satisfied. While this may ruin "the magic" for some, it creates magic for others.

Oh gosh let me just pluck another job off the job tree I have growing in my yard! Its not like Disney isn't one of the largest employers in an area where jobs are few and far between or anything...

Whenever I see a cm off property with a nametage on, I ask them to remove it. It's bad enough management let's costumes b taken because they are so cheap, the least cms can do is take off the nametag.

OP here. I'm not sure how this thread took a turn from my original topic, but I just wanted to reiterate that the costuming questions I had were IN the park during (or coming/going from) a shift. Not at WalMart, or the gas station, or any of the other random places being discussed.

as a former cast member and newcomer to these boards, thank you for the most entertaining thread i've read on here so far! :rotfl2:

I agree, costumes in lands and out of the WDW park do ruin the illusion, the magic. I understand people do not want to take the time on their own time to change, it is inconvenient in a fast paced hectic world. I really do think that if WDW doesn't want to become like a Six Flaggs Theme Park, they need to pay their employees for the time it takes to change into and out of their costumes, to do all they can to keep the illusions and magic alive.

There is no place else on earth like WDW and I for one would like to keep it that way.

And yes, as a nurse, I have had to change into and out of my scrubs on my own time, but the locker rooms were convenient to the unit

I hope the characters at least do not walk around in costume outside of WDW. That much should stay "sacred".
