Just returned from a great week at WDW! We stayed 7 nights at AOA in a Lion King suite. We are a family of 6: Me and DH, and four kids, ages about 15, 8, 6, and 3. Our previous trips we have stayed at SOG and offsite, so this was our first experience with a Disney resort. So, here are my thoughts:

Check-in:
We arrived about 4pm and there were only a few people checking in. Staff was very friendly, check-in took about 3 minutes, and then we were off! Our room requests were granted: fourth floor, lake view. :thumbsup2

The room:
We found the size of the family suite to be very adequate for the six of us and our luggage. Having two bathrooms was wonderful! DH and I slept in the master bedroom, and it was great having a separate room/bathroom/TV from the kids, especially after they went to bed. However, I found the queen bed very uncomfortable. It was hard and creaky, and just felt weird. :confused3DH said the firmness was good for his back, but I found the bed horrible. I also tried out the sofa bed and Murphy bed, and they were both very comfy. The kids had no complaints either.

Upon arrival, the room was mostly clean, but I could tell someone had done a lazy job of vacuuming: popcorn kernels, crumbs, and dry cereal in the corners and under/behind furniture. Also, the blanket in the drawer that is to be used for the sofa bed was horribly dirty, with dried food and dirt stuck on it. :sick:Obviously, it had not been washed. But, after those two issues had been taken care of, housekeeping was great for the rest of the week. No towel animals, but I wasn’t really expecting any. We also had no noise issues at all during the week.

Also, just wanted to touch on a few complaints I had read about AOA before visiting: First, it is true that the thermometer in the room does not go below 68 degrees. But, I must be cold-blooded because we kept our room set at 72. Any colder than that and I was freezing! Second, towels in the room are not luxurious, but they are fine. Next, as others have mentioned, the comforter on the queen bed was bizarrely heavy and strange feeling. However, about half way through the week, we returned to find the comforter gone and replaced with just a colorful throw at the end of the bed. Much better! Lastly, the walk from the main area to the Little Mermaid section – not a big deal at all.

Pools:

All three pools are nice, but nothing special. The Nemo pool was always busy, but never to the point where I couldn’t keep an eye on my kids. Chairs were always plentiful. The Cars and LM pool were never too busy. The zero entry was great for my youngest. Unfortunately, the Nemo splash area was closed for repairs during our entire stay. That was disappointing. :(

Food Court:
We had dinner at the food court once….and only once. I will say that the dining area is very nicely decorated, there was always plenty of seating available, and the food we had was good. However, the process of ordering, receiving and paying for our food was very slow and stressful. There just is no flow to the whole area, resulting in multiple lines, cramped ordering areas, confusion, and people trying to cross back and forth while balancing everything on a tray. Especially difficult with young children! The staff in the food court seemed overwhelmed and stressed as well.

Bus transportation:
Excellent! We had a 15 minutes wait one day leaving MK, but other than that, our waits were 0-5 minutes. We also made it to early morning ADR’s with no problems at all. Travel time to MK was 10-15 minutes, and shorter to the other parks. :thumbsup2

Lobby/public areas:

The lobby was bright and colorful, and the kids loved all the pictures. However, I couldn’t help but notice that the tile floor is not holding up well to all the traffic. Tiles are cracked, broken in places, and some grout missing between tiles. It also always seemed dirty, even though I saw staff cleaning it often during our visit. We visited Pop’s lobby during the week, and their lobby seemed so much nicer. I really think it had to do with the floor.

Of course, the outside areas of the resort are wonderfully themed. My kids loved walking around and taking pictures with all the characters. Landscaping is beautiful and well-maintained and everything is clean. Now, I knew before coming here that this is a big resort with lots of families and children, so I was prepared for a lot of people. But, I was still overwhelmed by how crowded it was at the resort. :crowded:Now, the mornings and afternoons were not so bad, but evenings were very crowded. It was almost like walking around the theme parks at times, trying to dodge strollers and groups of people on the walkways. I will say that it appeared as though a lot of people who were not staying at AOA stopped by in the evenings to look around, and that added to the crowds. Hopefully, that will die down a bit in the future. One evening, we walked over to POP to take a stroll, and the difference in the crowd level between the two resorts was amazing! POP seemed so quiet.

All in all, we had a good time. I really wanted to love this resort, but I only liked it. I’m glad we stayed here while most of my kids were young enough to enjoy the theming. They loved it and didn’t notice any of the negatives that I did. I would recommend this resort to those with young children or larger families, but be aware that is can be very crowded at times and the food court can be difficult to navigate. If those are deal breakers, then look elsewhere. Would we stay here again? No, I don’t think so. We only visit WDW once every few years, so the kids will be older next time, and I think we’ll be looking for a different experience – maybe the cabins?

Hope that helps anyone considering AOA. I’d be happy to answer any other questions!:)

Thanks for a great report and glad your family had a wonderful time. I will have to make a note on the bed here and put this in our good column, DW and I like firm beds:laughing:

Thanks for the review, I have been reading every AoA review that pops up! That is a bummer that the little splash area was closed the whole time, I am really looking forward to that for my son, so I hope that doesn't happen to us!

Thanks for posting your experience. A family member is thinking of staying here in the future so the descriptive review is appreciated.

Thank you so much for the details!! Our family of 4 is booked at AoA (Nemo) later this summer, currently for 9 nights. I'm planning to call today to split our reservation here with the Poly (we will actually save $ as we couldn't get a discount on the Nemo suite). For budgeting, it's best for us to start at poly (saves us almost $400). I've definitely got concerns about doing it this way, but we save $ and the kids really want to do it like this as they think they'll love this resort. Your review will help me not to have unrealistic expectations for AoA (and to really enjoy the poly while we're there). Thanks again!!

Another thank-you for the review! AoA is on our list to stay at but we haven't made it there yet.:)

That's a great review as we look to stay at AoA on our next stay.

disney lover at heart

Thanks for your review! It's usually just me and my adult daughter but we were curious about the resort. We were one of those coming over for a look last August  and to try out the food court. I didn't like my meal. Crab burger was disappointing. I was expecting crispy, like a crab cake, but it was soggy.
We thought the outside theming was very cute.
This aug we are spending our first night at Pop. So will maybe wander over again, Little Mermaid section wasn't open when we went over last year. And maybe try something else from food court. My daughters Tandoori chicken was good.
Maybe when they start offering discounts one day we will try AoA :goodvibes

We were going to stay in a LM this April but then got an awesome deal & switched to POR & loved it. Planning on AoA April 2015 when we return. DD will be 6 so I'm sure she'll still love the theming. Great review!!

We are doing the same thing. We were originally booked at AoA in a Little Mermaid room with paid table service dining plan in September. When free dining for September was released and LM rooms were excluded, we switched to a Royal Room at POR with free dining plan for less money than what we were going to spend at AoA for a Little Mermaid room. I still would like to stay at AoA sometime but I'm excited to give the royal room at POR a try.

Thank you for the honest and detailed review! I appreciate all the prso and cons you mentioned.

We are at AoA in Nov for 8 nights.

Thank you for the wonderful review, mum2four!

We will be at AoA in July. Your review & mention of the beds - gave us a better idea of who will sleep in which location (Hard mattress for me!).

Your review has me excited now! Thanks so much! :goodvibes

Hopefully the splash pad will be up and running before your visit. I'm not sure what the deal was. They had temporary fencing around the area with a "pool closed" sign, and part of the ground was even dug up. :confused3

Poly/AOA sounds like a nice split! I would like to stay at the Poly, but alas, we are a family of six and need more room! We did visit the Poly for an ADR, as well as the Contemporary and AKL. In all fairness to AOA, the lobby/restaurants/shopping areas at these resorts were pretty busy as well with lots of visitors. It just seemed the busyness at AOA was a notch or two above those other places.

I had the create your own pasta, which was very good, but the pizza/pasta line was the longest and slowest of all the lines. DH had a burger and fries, while kids had chicken drumsticks and pizza. They all liked their meals. I've read good and bad reviews on the food, so maybe it's hit and miss depending on what you order.

I share your sentiments about the food court and it is a deal breaker for me. I was there last year and the staff (then) were not stressed but clueless. They were nice and kind but I felt as though they genuinely did not know what was going on or how to fix hiccups.

There's got to be a better way, right? One night DH went to get pizzas to bring back to our room. He was in line for a very long time and then they ended up getting our order wrong. Another night we stopped by after returning from the park just to grab some pre-packaged items out of the cooler. Even that gave me a headache as it was such a zoo in there. I couldn't wait to get out! I would have liked to try some of the other selections off the menu, but it just wasn't worth the hassle to me.

I'm curious how AOA compares to the food courts at other value resorts. Maybe this is just the norm for food courts and it's best for me to avoid them all together in the future!:):)

I want to thank you for such a great and detailed review. I wish everyone would do the same with their reviews. You really captured the details that we find important as well.

I find far too many positive reviews of resorts with no real explanation or descriptions, so your review was a breath of fresh air.

Thanks for the review.

I agree with your thoughts on the bed & the food court!:thumbsup2

NOT THE NORM!!! Trust me! I am the self professed Queen of the Value resorts and I've never, ever had the issues I did at AoA and I go to WDW 3-5 times each year.

NICE!!!!! DISNEY LOVE!!!
:banana::love:::yes:::disrocks::bounce::simba:

We only ate in the food court once and did not have any problems. It seemed like POPs food court to me. I do however try to eat at off times to avoid crowds.
