We are just home from the 5/18 Magic. Thanks to these boards, we knew that we were allowed to bring our own beer onto the ship. So, as others have posted to do, we bought our cases of beer, loaded them up on a rolling luggage cart, and toted them off to our cruise. When we unloaded our car at the terminal, the baggage handler told us to bring the beer on the boat with us. I took the girls (2 and 5) and went into the terminal to head upstairs to check in while my DH parked the car. The security guard at the bottom of the escalator stopped me and said that I was not allowed to bring the beer on board. I very politely told him that I was told that I was allowed and could he please check into this a little further. He called someone on his radio and less than 60 seconds later, a Disney rep appeared and told me that I could bring the beer, but it was one case per person and we would have to carry it, meaning take it off the rolling cart. Let me clarify, we had four cases of beer, and were travelling with two other couples, one with us and the other flying in later. So, I waited with my children and friend and her child, until our husbands parked and were able to rearrange the carry-ons, so that we were each able to carry one case of beer.

We were never questioned about the beer again, by disney employees. Many, many fellow cruisers approached us to inquire as to whether we were allowed to do this or not. They obviously do not DIS !! HAHA !!

Wow. I don't think I've seen anything like this on the boards before. Has anyone had any recent experience (good or bad) using one of those rolling collapsing coolers to bring on the brew?

we took a rolling collapsible cooler when we went back in April. we were told by the porter who took our luggage that coolers were not allowed on board ... i didn't bother to argue because we did not have any drinks anyway (long story ... but being from California we didn't know where to stop to purchase beer and soda before we were right on top of the port and once we saw the ship ... we just couldn't make ourselves go searching for a place to make these last minute purchases) so our cooler turned into a hamper for the kids! we ended up spending more than we hoped to on drinks ... but oh well ... it is VACATION right?

wow.....i guess it's a good thing we don't drink....
on the other hand, we'll have to drag around our carry ons plus 3 laptops when we board.....i'm sure that won't be very much fun...

A word to the wise on the laptops. You MUST either register them with US Customs before boarding, or have proof (purchase receipts with serial numbers) that they were purchased before boarding the ship, or customs can actually say that you purchased them in a port of call and charge duty on them!

The case of beer per adult rule is NOT a Disney rule, it's a US Customs rule.

good point....but that's common in every country (registering laptops at customs).....we have the registrations sitting right inside the laptop case (even though you'd be a pycho to buy a year old laptop.)...

what about cameras?.....

in general, how does it work when you get back to port canaveral?...do you cross border control?.....customs?....

registering laptops at customs how do you do this and where do you go to do this. also i also have very high end photo gear and a lot of it do you register that also???

I would certainly register the cameras as well. When you reenter the US, you go through both INS and customs. As long as you are properly documented and not carrying any contraband or undeclared items, it's a breeze. :D

You can register it all at your local customs before you even leave home. They'll give you a special form to bring with you that will make it a breeze. You only have to do it once for each item. You must present the item locally (at any "international" airport). For more info, go to the US Customs Service web site.

My laptop is registered (it actually belongs to my company, but I took care of registering it). I didn't bother with my camera, as it cost $150 brand new seven years ago--read no real value anymore.

although i should add that last year when we entered at JFK, one of the 3 laptops wasn't registered.....the customs guy didn't even look at our laptops.....he sees them by the millions these days...
besides which, i had already reported a big no no so he was happy to be able to confiscate something from me...(i'd completely forgotten about the ban on meat products into the US....normally we fly to canada rather than new york....the canadians don't care if you bring a whole side of beef with you...
so i packed what i always do, then when i filled out the form on the airplane i said "oh oh".....and checked off yes on the meat/food line....
i got to throw about $200 worth of gourmet food products in the very special customs disposal bin....so entertaining....but they're so happy to be able to take something away from you, they didn't even bother looking at the laptops etc....

The last 3 cruises we have been on, I packed my beer and soda in a hard sided suitcase. Wrapped the 12-packs in towels to protect from any rough handling. Had no problems and it gets around the one case per person deal which I have never heard of until now. I brought a collapsable cooler our last cruise and it worked out great for keeping my brews and the kids sodas cold. Bring some plastic colored cups and you are all set!

JUST TALKED WITH OFFICER FROM CUSTOMS YOU CAN CALL TO GET A FORM FROM THEM AND HAVE OFFICER CHECK YOUR ITEMS AT THE DISNEY PORT TO GET A FORM CALL 321-783-2066 AND THEY WILL FAX ONE TO YOU.

I took soda on in a soft cooler but no way was I carrying it around..I checked it with the porter when I dropped off my passengers and the luggage curbside....all they said was that you could not have ice in the cooler and I didn't so I checked it in just like luggage.

We were on the 5/18 Eastern too, and we carried our own beer and 2 bottles of wine on board in a soft-sided collapsable cooler...no problem...it even went thru xray. Saw several rollable coolers too. It was great...we left it open and our cabin steward kept it full of ice for us...even got limes from room service and the bars for the coronas.

Maybe we're just lucky, but we've been on 4 cruises--bringing the laptop with us each time, and have never, ever been stopped and asked about the computer. And, NO, it wasn't registered because I have never heard of such a thing!

I think you'd get a lot less attention if you just throw the cases of beer in a suitcase and check it. If you are flying you could check an empty suitecase or two, then buy the beer and put in the suitcase before boarding. I'm not saying you're wrong by trying to carry beer as carry on through security, but if people keep drawing attention Disney might institute rules like Carnival (no beer on board). Discreet is good!

I wanted to take a laptop to download pictures. If I pack it in my suitcase would I have to register it?

I would strongly advise against packing a laptop in a suitcase and checking it. You laptop is more fragile than a 12 pack of beer plus I'd be concerned about theft. Many large companies specifically prohibit employees from ever checking their laptops.

To lighten the load, pack all your cables and other gadgets in your luggage and take the laptop alone in a case. Make sure it is fully charged in case you need to "show it off" to security.
