just back, POR review

We just came back from a great 9-day stay at POR. With the exception of the buses to and from DTD which were slow and infrequent (but which has been a problem for me at other resorts as well), we had absolutely zero complaints about the buses. We were generally on the bus within 10 minutes of getting to the bus stop. I don't know if it was the parks we were going to, or the time of day we were travelling, but we only stood going to the parks on one occasion that I can remember, and usually got a seat on the way back as well. We used the East bus stop almost exclusively since it was so close to our room.

Our rooms were fine, and the landscaping looked absolutely beautiful to me (although this was my first visit and I had nothing to compare it to). We enjoyed every aspect of the resort and I would be happy to go back - in fact, I wish I was there right now!!

I am not trying to invalidate the OPs complaints, simply reassure those of you on your way to POR! I hope you all have great trips!

Hopefully it was just a bad timing issue for the OP. We will be staying there for the first time in October and I hope it's a pleasant visit for us. Waiting for busses I can handle, but an unclean room... yikes!:scared1:

For those of you who are nervous; Don't be! I stayed at POR for the first time in May and LOVED this resort! Everything was wonderful; truly!

I have a web page with my pictures and comments from this trip, please take a look, and calm your fears :sunny:

P.S. This is not to say that things don't go wrong at a Disney resort, or that every Disney resort room is sparkling, but experiences like the OP's is the exception rather than the rule :) I don't doubt that he didn't enjoy his stay and that he had problems and I'm sorry for his experience, but please don't let his experience make you nervous about a wonderful resort because POR usually gets excellent reviews :)

P.P.S. I do have to disagree with something the OP said; he basically said that complaining at the time would've done no good, and that's simply not true. I've been reading the DIS boards for almost 7 years now and USUALLY when someone comes back and reports a problem, and says that they reported it to the resort at the time, there was a satisfactory outcome. The time to mention any problem is while you're there! :)

Disney's BoardWalk Villas

We booked a studio here last October 2006, it was our second visit here and we felt that the studios need upgrading. We found a lot of buildup in the corners, walls that needed a fresh coat of paint, and bedding that needs washing (and I mean outer bedding).

This year after our Disney cruise we decided to stay at the Inn side of the BoardWalk after having seen a couple of rooms, we thought there was no comparison between the two sides of the resort. The DVC side needs some renovations. :laundy:

Still a beautiful resort overall.

Our stay in late May was at POR. We, too, had a really not so great experience. Checking in at 10:30 P.M. with only two people ahead of us took almost an hour! Seriously, it took about 50 minutes! The room was tidy but NOT clean. There were BUGS in our room - centipede looking creatures and spiders... yes, multiple of each! The AC in the room was horrible! Every time the AC would come on/turn off, the entire wall would shake and the window would rattle unbelievably. The buses were s-l-o-w. We have stayed at Pop, ASMo, and ASMu and had better bus service at all of these. There was a very rude counter person at the register in the dining area. When we were leaving, we had a little better than 2 hours to meet the Magical Express... we had decided that we wanted to pay the difference to get annual passes. I went to inquire at the concierge. Hmph... rude is an understatement. And asking for a manager did nothing but make us more disappointed. Okay, so we now know that you cannot upgrade to annual passes at the resorts... fine... but was the flippant attitude necessary??? I felt like I was at the local DMV not Disney! There was this attitude of, "too bad" rather than, "I am sorry but this is not possible." It felt as though they took pleasure in telling us no. This was the first trip, sincerely, that we were more than ready to leave Disney. Yes, late May the CMs were threatening to strike, but we should not have received the brunt of their frustration. Speaking with a friendly CM afterwards we were told to write a letter. I did this through the automatic post trip survey they sent us. We have heard NOTHING. Not one I'm sorry. Nothing. Another disappointment. What happened to our magical Disney???? We are returning in Dec. We are hopeful. Praying that this negative experience was a fluke. POR was disappointing and we will not return to that particular resort.

Did you pick up the phone and call the front desk immediately after being put in a buggy room?

Still not clear, did you write a letter (the old fashioned kind, with a stamp)? An automated survey is very different than actually writing a letter, IMO.

What resort did you select for your December trip?

Wishing you a great stay next time, sorry you had a disappointing experience.

I just returned from the POR last night and I can't wait to go back there. It was my first stay there and I loved it. Our room was very clean and I thought the transportation was excellent. Leaving Epcot one night, they had two buses pulling up at a time. I never waited more than 15 minutes for a bus.
Check in took about 5 minutes and this was the first day of the free dining. I was told that 1500 people were checking in that day. Our luggage took forever (we finally had to go down and get it) but those CM's at the luggage depot were working their tails off trying to keep up with the amount of luggage that was coming in. There was luggage every where!!

Sorry that you did not have the same experience.

When I sent some concern to guest service last time, it took 4months to get back from them. They are dealing with a lot of complain/concern/opinion. I don't think your comment has been ignored. It usually takes time to get response from guest service

Wow this makes me nervous,

Sorry, I always find this funny. My wife is like this. She gets nervous over 1 unconfirmed complaint, but ignores the 1000s of "I LOVED IT" posts in addition to the more official 85-95% satisfaction ratings (I think somewhere in there).

I wouldn't worry. Even Disney Value Resorts make many "5 star hotels" look like garbage in comparison.

We just got back from 9 days at POR and had no real complaints at all.
Some highlights:
- The bus service was decent, if not rather good. Sure there were some lines to deal with at the end of the day, but nothing that I would not expect.
- After requesting a "never been smoked in" room (since I heard reports of lingering smoke smell from some of the former smoking rooms) our room was very clean and fresh smelling upon our arrival.
- Our room was ready for us when we checked in at 10 AM.
- The room was cleaned well every day.
- The food court was good and rather quick. Had no problems with crowds.
- Check in did take a little bit, but the line was rather long.
- The pools were great.
- Even the laundry worked well.

Respectfully speaking, I subscribe to the idea that anyone who has issues and does not contact the management to seek resolution is not doing their part as a customer. If they dont know whats wrong - they wont know how to deal with it. Yes, it takes some time out of your schedule, but still.

As for those expressing concern about their upcoming trip... This is my third time at POR and it has never disappointed. Sure, at times your mileage may vary, but you also tend to hear a lot more of the bad than the good at times only because its easier to vent about the bad.

When checking in, I swear I thought someone was going to pop out with a camera and yell that we were on candid camera. It was B-A-D. The computer system was recently upgraded and a manager had to attend to each reservation checking in... and they couldn't tell if we had tickets, much less the dining plan that we PAID for! We did politely make them aware of our issues at the front desk. NOTHING happened. They said that the issues would be addressed but NOTHING happened and we were there for 10 nights! As for a formal letter, I have yet to send it. I have written one but it is not yet complete. I have a sticky note on my screen reminding me to finish it and send it. Part of my procrastination is that there was NO response to any of our previous attempts to get some form of resolution... much less a simple apology. My husband and I kept looking at each other throughout that trip and expressed how we felt that we were in the twilight zone... this was NOT a Disney experience. Too many things to mention them all here... like the boats shutting down due to wind... and after we lugged the $700 of souvenirs we purchased at DTD from POFQ to POR, here come the boats - running again. It was windy but NOT dangerous for a canal such as the one that these boats travel. Before anyone blasts me for questioning this policy, consider the fact that these CMs running the boats watched us struggle with all the packages (we were leaving the following day and could not trust that the items would reach the resort if we had sent them). Then, before we reached the POR, they were running again. I think they made a snap decision - and again - it seemed that they took pleasure in denying families... not just us. Perhaps there was a supervisor who recognized that closing the boats was ridiculous. There were SO MANY little things that added up to a NOT-SO-DISNEY experience. We will NOT return to POR - though the grounds were absolutely breathtaking and the pool was fantastic... the poor (rude) service and the room cleanliness (lack thereof) were enough. We are going to try the Caribbean Beach Resort in December. Keeping my fingers crossed that the threatening strike contributed heavily to the poor experience we had in May/June - and now these issues have been resolved. Too much of a Mickey fan to give up yet.

We just got back 2 weeks ago and we had a fabulous stay at POR! I'm sorry others didn't have that kind of experience. We were in Building 16 and it was a great location. Our room was clean, plenty of towel animals, landscaping was beautiful! We will stay there again!

subbing so I can find this thread when I return. We check in on Sept 3, staying 3 nights.

will let everyone know either way it goes, the good, the bad and the ugly!

I am a clean freak so sometimes I think those who say room was "plenty clean" aren't "looking" the same as I do?

So are those who have stayed and had problems of whatever nature saying it is best to go back to front desk and talk to someone or is it okay to call front desk? I have heard I should call housekeeping directly for those type of issues? :confused3

any insight greatly appreciated.

We've stayed at POR AB numerous times and every one of them wonderful. Can't speak on behalf of the bus service as we always have our car. Keep in mind the number one rule of life, "things happen". I'm not giving Disney a free pass, but we live in an imperfect world, if you can't accept this fact, you should probably never leave the house. I would've definitely said something to a manager and even asked to be moved to a new room if it was that bad, saying nothing at all does no good whatsoever.

I am subscribing too since we are staying at POR in October for the first time. I am worried about the resort after reading the post, but I think there are more positives than negatives! I really hope we enjoy our stay there! We requested AB section since I like the theming(I think I requested building 18). We will see how it goes and hopefully I will have a good report when we get back!:wizard:

we stayed in room 8567... the gazebo was in front.. If you walked down the center walk way it looked like the owners moved out about 6 months ago… . I talked to a cast member who said the landscaping was outsourced…. and to the point of cleanliness... shouldn't these things be done prior to you even entering the room as part of a quality assurance? shouldn't the room be clean prior to a new guest? I had family staying in 8592 and the refrigerator cabinet door was no longer there…. You could see the hinges, but no door, should you notify mgt about that? Shouldn’t that be part of the QA of a room? You pay a lot of money to stay here….

We just returned and were in 8606. My parents were in a connecting room to ours (8605??). This was our fourth stay at POR and we had similar experiences to you. I wonder if we had the same housekeeper? Our rooms were filthy. The carpets were so dirty that our socks were black after about an hour. Just two years ago, when I still had a "9 month old crawler", we were so pleased at how clean the carpets were in both POP and POR. I honestly didn't mind letting her crawl around on the floor in either resort. Thank goodness my kids are beyond the crawling stage because it would have made me sick to let them crawl on these floors. The dust was months thick in places. My dad was having a horrible time with his allergies until we realized that by leaving the ceiling fan on, it was blowing all the dust around. We received towels that were worn thin. Dad put his finger through a washcloth one morning. The paint was peeling off our door on the outside (not just a little, but a section that was probably one foot square). Cobwebs were on our door and around our door upon arrival and were still there when we checked out 12 days later. One day we returned from the parks to find one bed completely made and the other one was only partially made and the bedspread was on the floor. Coffee and styrofoam cups were not replaced for 10 nights. We had to request that they vacuum the rug and even then, only the middle section was done. The shower curtain had quite a bit of mold on it, and the corner of my parents bathroom floor had mold coming out from behind a loose tile (appeared like maybe a leak behind the wall). The furniture is definitely showing signs of wear and tear, but I'd be willing to overlook that if the room was at least kept clean.

I also agree that the grounds were not nearly as well kept as in the past. The walkways were often left unswept and the grounds were just not kept in the same condition as in previous trips.

Granted, we could have complained and maybe we should have, but we had to fight all the way to top management to get the location of our rooms that we did. We needed 2 connecting rooms for 12 nights that were centrally located because my mom has a bad leg. We really didn't want to chance losing our location so we put up with the conditions of the room. Frankly, we aren't in the room that much anyway, but it is really sad and disgusting that disney is allowing their standards to slide. I will be writing a letter to let them know about all of the complaints, but I'm sure I'm not the first one to do so. I don't know how true the numbers are, but last year our housekeeper told us she had 14 rooms to clean, this year our housekeeper claimed to have 18. Like I said, I don't know how true this is because it is only based on what they told us, but maybe that is part of the problem?

We saw quite a few areas where disney is slipping in the parks as well. For instance, their rental strollers (particularly in the MK) are in horrible condition (broken wheels, ripped canopies, and generally dirty), as well as their ECV's. Mom had to return her's once because it kept getting stuck, others had completely bald tires, broken speed controls, and rattled like they were going to fall to pieces under her.

The merchandise we purchased was no better. $28 for a tinkerbell cotton nightgown on which the tinkerbell decal began peeling off after the second wearing. It hadn't even been washed yet. Another $11 down the drain for a belle polly pocket set whose head broke out of the body (the body split in 4 places) the first night my daughter played with it. She's been playing with polly's for over a year and owns at least 20 and we have never had this happen. My DS got a pirate gun which broke after 5 days. Can't remember how much that one cost. My older daughter got a tinkerbell baton with light up ends that didn't work even after we replaced the batteries, and had silver fringe on the ends that ripped off within two days. How disappointing for children to have their souveniers break after such a short time. Disney should be able to do better than that.

Disney is not a cheap vacation, but it used to be that you got great, clean value for your money. We certainly didn't feel that way after this trip. We still had a great time, but something was definitely missing and for the first time in 7 years, I didn't come home and start immediately planning my next disney trip. I'm not saying we won't return, but most likely not next year (we've gone 6 out of the last 7 years). The magic was missing this trip.

ETA: forgot to mention that it took almost an hour to check in because they kept messing up applying my disney gift cards. We didn't find out the true problem until we checked out. They apparently applied them to the wrong room at first and then needed the manager to check all of the gift cards and reapply them. So, for our aggravation and time, they gave our kids some extra stickers for making them stand there for an hour waiting.

This is exactly how I feel. We have been to Disney eight times since 2002. Each time we have left with a heavy heart... yearning for one more day of magic... lamenting that the vacation was coming to a close... each time until this past May/June trip. The "VALUE" in Disney vacations has always been in the quality of service. My husband went to the "Disney Institute" in Oct 2001. Basically the Disney Institute was an educational experience that companies paid hefty $ to learn the "Disney way". It was all about Frontstage/Backstage... the guest experience. They were taught that the key to Disney success was that each and every guest be made to feel as though they were the only guest. It was amazing - and for years, this was our experience with our Disney vacations. It is tragic to see/feel/witness the decline of what Walt created and insisted upon to fulfill his dream. Initially we had discussed other venues for future vacation travels but alas, I booked a December Disney vacation. This will be the telltale. We won't continue to bring thousands of our hard earned dollars each year to a place that continues to decline in the quality of the vacation experience. We seriously considered doing Universal but I just can't give up on the mouse yet. Praying that the powers that be will take notice. I am finishing my letter and sending it out Tuesday. I would love to hear from anyone whose complaint was answered. BTW, we bought a princess bathing suit that the characters peeled off after the first dip in the pool. The Mickey purse/bag that I bought in October broke in about a week - the gromets (s?) or whatever they are called, opened and I stopped using the bag for fear it would rip. What is up with that? Nothing Disney is cheap. It used to be that if you bought Disney, you were assured a certain quality. I am missing the magic, too........ :guilty:

Bartleby1-- I can't help but wonder if you were put in rooms not intended to be in use, after you had to fight to get connecting rooms. It sounds like you got a room that was in need of some major cleaning, and maybe they finally gave them to you just to appease your request for connecting rooms. Not that that excuses the shoddy maid service the rest of the week, but if you had to argue for those rooms, maybe there was a reason the did not want to give them to you to start with. :confused3

Remember that connecting rooms are just a request, as is room location. Even with someone having a bad leg, location is not guaranteed. I know, my mom has bad knees, and even if I request a location close to the front, sometimes we end up in the boonies. You have to remember that it is only a request.
