Hi all,

Just back from a week at a 4 bedroom pool home ("Emerald Footprints") in Emerald Island. We were nervous about our first offsite stay, so we booked 3 nights at the Wilderness Lodge to end our trip. Well, we wish we had stayed in the pool home all trip! I don't know if we can stay in a hotel again.

Getting to WDW, Universal, and Sea World was a breeze. Emerald Island itself is very new and pretty. We did not use public facilities there as we had no need. The home was new and spotless. It was very very relaxing to ocme home to at night. DH and I loved not sharing a room with our DS5 and DS3 and they loved not hsaring with each other. We saved money on food, ate more healthful and delicious breakfasts than we would have otherwise, and had fresh coffee or cold beer whenever we wanted! We had an indoor jacuzzi and outdoor spa, as well as a pool. No fighting over lounge chairs. DS5 was thrilled with the PS2 and Broadband, as well as the pool table and air hockey. It was great stepping out of the car and being inside in 5 steps. If you felt like a snack or drink, you didn't need to get dressed an trek to the lobby.

The kids slept so well, and really needed the respite fomr the activity of the parks.

The home had two sitting areas, so Grandma could watch Imus while we did something else in the den. This home had 7 TVs with Direct TV, as well as the computer and free local calls.

The only negative was that we arrived late (11:00pm) and had to stop at the Management Company in Lake Buena Vista, use a code to get into the lock box, then retrieve a code to get into our pool home. The management company was on the way, but we had a devil of a time getting their lock box open. We must have tried for 20 minutes, with two crying preschoolers in the car. We finally got it. But that was the only glitch the entire week.

I was worried about the homes being so close together -- they have only a few feet of spce between them. But we hardly saw anyone out, no neighbors at all. No noise at all. It was so quiet!

I was also worried about traffic. We only had one bad morning, a Sunday, there was an accident on I-4 and we were backed up for a little while, but otherwise I would say it was as fast or faster to get from the pool home to any park except MK than it was to use WDW transportation from the WL. Driving to the parks was not a problem in the least, and we have two in strollers and a Grandma with us!

The cost for the week in a 2000 square foot 4 bedroom home was about $1100. Divide by 7, that's about the cost of one 300 sq. ft.room room in a moderate resort. In fact, our WL stay for three nights (2 rooms with an AP discount) was equal to the cost of 7 nights in the pool home. NOT worth it.

I would not hesitate to recommend an offsite stay in a villa to anyone. It was great.

Sounds like a great trip! Thanks for your report. The house sounds beautiful. :sunny:

Thanks for the report! I still stay onsite for short trips, but love the space to spread out for week long trips offsite. It's just more relaxing. I'm glad you saw for yourself what a breeze driving is... and it is a must that hubby and I have some privacy from the kids on a week long trip !

Glad you had a good time! Do you have a contact# for this place. Pictures as wee? Thanks!

I was wondering how your trip went! We left the home the day you arrived. It was wonderful wasn't it? we've been renting for the last 3 years and would never consider staying in a hotel again. The neighborhood when we stayed was packed--there were cars parked everywhere. But we never heard any noise, in fact, we were the only ones in the pool morning, noon and night! Glad you enjoyed your stay

Thanks for the report, looks like you guys had a great time. We are thinking about staying in the Emerald Island area also.

I just happened to notice your post on the WL. I don't ususally go on the resort board but yours caught my eye. You've got quite a few responses!
I don't think I would be able to stay on site in one room after being in the vacation home!

I know -- I've never started such a long thread. Guess I got my 15 minutes of fame on the resorts board. Criticizing WL, the Poly, or the Swan'Dolphin will do it every time, LOL!

We were so torn about whether to do onsite at the beginning or end. It was hard to move into cramped quarters at the end, but we wanted to end the trip with a "bang" -- service, amenities, pool, restaurants. I think we would do a combined on site off site trip that way again, but we wouldn't choose the WL.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I have been in a fit trying to decide between 7 days in 2 pop century rooms or a week in a 4br/3ba home for myself, dh and 3 kids.

You have really helped me make up my mind. I KNOW we will enjoy having the extra room, the kitchen and enough space to relax at the end of the day!

Thanks again for sharing your experience!! I'm so excited to find that perfect home now!!

I know exactly what you are talking about the homes. Five years ago my mom brought us to WDW there were 14 of us. I thought it was going to be a disaster on top of eah other and so on. I told my husband to bring a credit card just in case we needed space.
My mistake it was the best vacation. Even my husband being the outlaw was inpressed. We also just came back from EI. We stayed 12 days and it was beautiful. Have already booked for 16 days this coming year. There is a great site for just EI homes.

worth a look. We went down with friends and had a ball. We babysat for each other. My kids had week long sleep overs they thought. It was just so much fun. We all had built in friends.
I did not cook myself I refuse when I am on vacation but my friend cooked a full supper. Lots of pool towels and pool toys. The dvd and vcr tapes were a handy late night treat for the kids. Also the ps2 my sons enjoyed. All you need is some cloths and sunscreen. There are markets for the items you will need wine, beer, soft drinks and breakfast items. We were good to go.
