We usually drive it in a day, but this time we decided to try leaving on Saturday afternoon and stop over in Lumberton. We won't be doing that again! The traffic from D.C. to Fredericksburg was terrible. It took 9 hours to get to Lumberton and the hotel was a bit seedy. It wasn't horrible, but the room was very dark, even with the lights on, and although it was a non-smoking room, it smelled like smoke (I could smell it in the matress) and just didn't feel all that clean.
We came home a day early because of Charley, and the traffic was much lighter (except around D.C., but we expected that). We drove back in a day and I know that we will do it that way from now on. The kids were golden during the ride down and back (they were so good I thought I had brought the wrong kids home!
)
I hope this helps someone with their planning and driving!
