I figured why not post one of these rapid things. I don't feel like doing a trip report for this one..
The trip was 100% unplanned. My parents were coming to town, they "didn't need to do disney" is how they put it. It was my first time in the parks with them in 25 years (captain eo just came out the last time so no animal kingdom or mgm yet). They wanted a restful vacation. they had 1 or 2 places they wanted to eat if it made sense so I just went with it..
What really happened is they purchased 2 day tickets as soon as they were here with the plans to eat around the world in epcot and let my daughter show them MK (mom for I want to do mk but I can't say that because I told you I don't care). they ended up upgrading to a third day. I also took the week off as I needed a vacation even if it wasn't going anywhere, I just needed a week with no thoughts about work.
Weather (this plays into things): it was some of the first lower days with humidity (still humid but finally getting lower from the summer). No rain to deal with while we were out. No escape from the sun and it was mid 80s.
Observations:
- Ate in Morocco for the first time and really regret not eating there before. it was great!
- as I predicted food and wine food is not really the type of food you want to eat in high temps and high humidity. It was better (not great year) than the rest of the summer.
- food and wine is still extremely inconsistent. some things I hated were great, some things I went out of my way to get are now on my worst of food and wine list. There is no consistency and this is not how this event should be. flower and garden still blows it away food and decoration wise and I can't wait for spring.
- my parents loved seeing mk decorated in halloween and fall, they've never seen it outside of spring and summer before.
- same day adrs and fastpasses did not let us down. We didn't wait for anything and had our pick of almost everything.
- we walked onto FEA but this was pure luck, we went to DAS it and walked up while it was broken. Grab an ice cream and looked around norway and poof we were about 15 people from the start of the line with 20 seconds of waiting when they reopened it. First ride my mother tried with a transfer from a wheelchair and it didn't work out well so we knew what to avoid later.
- when did the listen to the land song get completely removed from that ride? I remember a section earlier in the year that still played but but now it's just gone and the ending isn't elevated by what it was replaced with. (and yes I had to find it online to hear when I got back that night and again right now)
- my parents really liked the new fantasy land and how much larger the back of MK is now. my dad didn't want any coasters or anything because of his back but did try 7dmt and enjoyed both the ride and how smooth it was. He wishes all the coasters would get upgraded to be similar so he could still ride them.
- we didn't miss a single ride we wanted. soarin and 7dmt same day fastpasses plus many others. overall we didn't do a ton of attractions, just a few of my parents favorites and a couple new ones.
- I liked the accessibility for wheelchairs. that did play into getting into some rides faster than without it or a fastpass. just overall a good experience for my mom to still enjoy her day and one of the few weeks she got out and about doing things she just can't do anymore normally.
- crowds were still up from the hurricane but not horrible as most rides didnt' change what they normally would be but the populars were only 5-10 minutes longer than what I would call the average of summer (30-45 most places, 60s here and there). someone mentioend to me it was hell week so this wasn't a bad crowd if it was. (hell week normally impact universal more than disney).
- the crowds were very weird, it was packed to move around the parks but it didn't translate into how many were in lines or getting food at f&w. I really enjoyed it and it was one of the smoothest walk slow, ride or eat fast weeks I've ever had.
- I like the new muppets in MK show. I hate there is no schedule and I don't get it.. I don't want to sit around all day hoping they come out and they seem to be spaced over an hour apart from each other. cast members were great and shared when the next show was no problem so talk to the cast at hall of presidents and don't just wait around for no reason. It's not a see it over and over type of show so I hope they mix it up with new topics and not just run these same 2 until it's considered unpopular to stop it.
- my mother made the comment that everyone that visits epcot is much nicer than those at magic kingdom. It was a rude, control your kids or I will type of crowd...
- my mother was also upset that kitchen cabaret was gone.
- being in mk before mnsshp was nice. the afternoon didnt' get more crowded like a normal day would but nobody seemed to leave at the same time to make more room. I would do it again as it was a very full day for us (but we didn't do anywhere near what the average family might try to do).
- I never noticed before tonight how much I love the fireworks. I guess they just complete my day, relax me and my mom can't be out in the dark (well she can but she can't see much in dark so she's normally in bed earlier). It felt like I was on a resort break listening to fireworks from home and the day didnt' really end. There's a lot of I didn't expect emotions going on right now considering, I can just head over anytime I want.
- MK is definitely upping the characters out and about. this was mostly late morning and it wasn't characters you would notice but it was like the royal court roaming around their land to mingle with the citizens.. never seen this at any disney park before and it was a nice change and great to see them looking for ways to get more than just meet and greets out and interacting with everyone.
Outside disney:
- I did go to kennedy space center with my dad. Mostly a wasted day which is strange as we love that stuff. It just seemed very any science museum anywhere in the world type of place. It did make me appreciate parts of disney I thought I hated when I got a comparison of what others do though...
- to be fair, there is new things opening up there soon and they did have some things still down from the hurricane that hit them harder than it hit the disney area... not really exhibit wise but certain tours and things we would have loved to do.
EDITED TO ADD:
- My daughter and I have a style where we circle the park many times and don't mind criss crossing and good at it. My dad just couldn't go around like that so we needed to really change and slow down to say "what else in this area do we want to do before we're in the next area". It was a nice change but we also missed a lot of little things going on..
