Nothing more I can add onto what others have said in trip reports or just back posts.
We got into Hawaii two days early and stayed at the Holiday Inn Waikiki to help with the time change (coming from Michigan). If we (well, when) go again I will gladly do this again. Nice hotel, great location (had a island view, 9th floor). Lots of walk-able shops and restaurants.
Aulani is amazing, 'Ama'Ama was great no matter the meal (did 2 lunches and 2 dinners). We had a one bedroom (11th floor, ocean view) and did breakfast in the room everyday. Had a few pool days: they keep on top of you not having a wristband for the pools. Mine broke off (when or how, I don't know) and I was in the lazy river and was asked (kindly) to prove I was staying at the resort and had to get a new band, all said and done not even 10 minutes later I was back in. Enjoyed the balcony in the mornings, don't know if I would spend the points again for the ocean view, might go with a pool view next time.
We island hopped one day to Maui and came back on the last flight of the night. That made for a long day for me. Was up at 5am and didn't get back into bed until after 2am the following day. Think we will just stick to Oahu, unless we book another hotel on the island we go to.
On our last night (yesterday) my wife told me she wanted to buy points to come every other year (we used just about 2 years worth of points for this trip). I knew that was coming, from the minute we stepped into the lobby, and I agree. I don't think I would buy at Aulani, I would buy used at another WDW resort (thinking SSR) and use those, but we are going to wait and see what VWL2 (or whatever the name is) is going to have room wise and might buy there.
One complaint, not on Disney/Aulani/Hawaii, but United Airlines: How in the heck do you send luggage to LAX when I am on a direct flight from Honolulu to Chicago?! They claim they are going to send the bag to my regional airport here 'by Saturday'. Ugh..
