I have to admit, I am one of those that have always argued against those that have complained of "odors" at Polynesian. I am now a believer that they weren't just smelling the fragrance of peat and/or moss and/or tropical smells--our room flat out smelled HORRID!
At first I thought it was, as Tikiman has said many times, just someone messing with the air/humidity control. We immediately went back upstairs and reported it to concierge. Maintenance then came in and changed a filter, dried out the room, and used an ionizer on it. That worked for the first day and the odor was back just as strong as the first day. We didn't bother trying to resolve it since it seemed apparent the smell wasn't going away. Moving rooms wasn't possible because it was a full house! Sold out, no more room at the Inn. . .couldn't believe that one. . .most of the time Hawaii isn't full and, as I was told, there are 40 additional rooms in Tahiti. More on that later. . .
This was definitely--no question about it--MOLD and MILDEW. I know the difference between the "normal" smell of the Polynesian--been there enough times to know it and love it! This was pretty awful. After being in the room a few minutes, you acclimated; but the initial odor was noxious. I did NOT notice this odor anywhere in the common areas of Tahiti--thankfully, so maybe it was confined to the first floor rooms??
So now, everyone can say "I told you so"! I now believe you BUT I will repeat, I've never had that odor in any other room at Polynesian, including one stay about 8-9 years ago in Tahiti! I've definitely got more to say about our stay in Tahiti vs Hawaii and concierge service, but I'm still fighting the post-laundry battle among other things! Soon. . .I hope. . .
