and I have to admit it was a very mixed experience this trip. Riccardo makes a very strong argument for going at Christmas and, to a large extent, I agree with how he sums it up. But (and it may be a fairly big but), I didn't think the Disneyland Park coped with the crowds very well at the weekend and, with the wet weather on the Saturday, it was borderline obnoxious at times (although staying at the Disneyland Hotel would have made a difference :teeth: ).

The Xmas decorations ARE spectacular (although the Studios seem very plain compared to the ostentation of the main park), and the Lighting Ceremony is an absolute must-see. Belle's Christmas Village is also beautifully done (even if it is another opportunity to push Disney merchandise  ), but, during the main part of the day, it was almost impossible to get through and around because of the crowds being funnelled through here. Not great crowd flow, IMHO.

With Phantom Manor closed, Frontierland seemed very thin for attractions, with the Riverboat ride drawing some long queues and Big Thunder topping 90 minutes even in late afternoon. We had to queue (!) for FastPasses for Star Tours, and the FP's were all long gone by 1pm, leaving another 60-minute-plus queue here. I also noticed several restrooms closed all 3 days we were there, none of the drinking fountains worked (and I mean none, in either park) and the usually enjoyable buffet at the Plaza Gardens was a bear garden, with badly organised queues and very slow service (in fact, getting the bill here and at Auberge du Cendrillon took nearly as long as the meal!).

My overall impression was of the park being caught out by high guest numbers (although the Studios remain easy to negotiate), with the wet weather making things (and people) worse. The queue for dinner at Hotel Cheyenne was just ridiculous at 7.30 (way out into the lobby), and breakfast at 9 was just as bad. We still enjoyed ourselves (knowing where to avoid the worst of the crowds and when to book for meals, etc) and the Xmas lights were well worth seeing. But, I do feel that there has been some cutting of corners in staffing levels and general maintenance, and some people could be distinctly discouraged if this was their first DLP experience.

Hopefully, the rest of the Xmas period will see better crowd management and happier guests!

Wow! I was so lucky to go midweek. I experienced no queues at
all on Star Tours, Thunder Mountain, Space Mountain,R&Rollercoaster, Pirates of the Carribean etc. The only queue we saw was for Peter Pan's Flight. We actually used all our
12 complimentary Fastpasses from DL hotel on Peter Pan for the kids because everything else was literally walk-on.
I am a bit of a coward regarding rollercoasters and had never done Space Mountain, but was determined to do it this trip.
First day there I walked straight through the entrance at SM and never saw anyone else in front of me the whole way to the trains!
I then realised I would be making my debut totally alone on a rollercoaster in the dark and I bottled out and went away!
(I finally did it on Friday morning, again with no wait at all but at least with a few others.) I think I'll stick to midweeks from now on. By the way Simon, I bought your guidebook from my local bookshop before we left and I have to say it was an invaluable aid to us and a brilliant read. Congratulations!
Anyway I'm sorry things got so bad over the weekend, and it does look like Disney is going to have to address these issues because people just won't go back if they spend most of their day waiting and queueing.

Riccardo

Actually that's a good point I should have made. We arrived on the Friday and the Disneyland Park was only moderately busy and therefore much more enjoyable. It seems the combination of the weekend and near Christmas is an unfortunate one, and it highlights the benefits of going in midweek if you can.

Simon, a bit off this thread, but do you by any chance have the info on the new annual passes about to be announced?

Thanks for the report, Simon :)

It's a shame to hear about the huge crowds, it seems like going mid-week is the best option!

Richard :)

Hi Jody. I'm afraid I didn't look into it this trip, although I did see signs offering Un Passeport Annuel for the day's ticket price plus 30 euros, which struck me as something of a bargain. I'll check with the PR people.

I'll be in DLP in just 7 days(!!!!) and I was wondering if either of you could tell me which rides are currently down? Are there any attractions that we shouldn't miss? How about restaurants? We are planning on going to Inventions and Auberge.

Thanks,

SmilingMouse

Phantom Manor and Autopia were the only rides closed last week that I noticed. I'm sure I heard PM was going to re-open mid December so that should suit you.
You must go on Space Mountain (much better than WDW),
Rock&Rollercoaster (lightning quick but very smooth), Pirates of the Carribean( pure Disney Magic and you float past a wonderful looking restaurant), Thunder Mountain (similar to WDW but with an exciting plunge at the start under the river!), Star Tours (dated but I loved it) and ALL of the Xmas shows.
A highlight for me was the Christmas Parade in Disneyland Park at 4 pm. Last Tuesday was cold but clear and the blue sky was a great backdrop to an stunning parade with fantastic music.
Don't miss it!

As for restaurants we ate fast food in the day, so as to see as much as possible, and they were fine for what they did. For dinner
I can't reccomend Inventions at the Disneyland hotel highly enough. 43 Euros per adult, 22 for kids and all the Langoustines, King prawns, scallops, charcuterie, filet mignon, roast duck, stews, rib roast, grilled vegetables, potatoes done every which way and
mouthwatering desserts that your tummy can handle!

we also ate at Planet Hollywood which was a mixed bag. Ribs-great, Steak-ok, pasta-lousy, burger-good.

Our other dinner was at Buffalo Bills and I know a lot of people love the dinner show, but I was dissapointed. I'm aware it's difficult to cater for hundreds at once ( I'm in the restaurant business) however the food was of a very poor standard and I noticed a lot of grimaces from people around us.
But, they may well have had an off night and we were unlucky so don't just listen to me.

If you are lucky with the weather and are visiting during weekdays you will have an absolute ball. I still can't get the smile off my face a week later! The Christmas season at DLP is truly magical, I wish I was going back.

Have a great trip, and tell us all about it!

Regards

One other attraction that was closed was the little boat ride at the back of Fantasyland, next to Casey Junior, the Le Payes des Conte de Fees, which is always a hit with younger children.
