Just back from WDW using MYW dining plan

I honestly don't know the answer to this because it wasn't an issue for us - two adults, two kids, and we ate all our meals together.

However, it really is a very simple system to use. Since everything's coded to your KTTW card, I'm sure a quick scan of your card at any location would most likely give you the information you needed. Or if I really wanted to be sure I might just jot it down in my wallet like I do our parking lot locations and save your receipts. They also tell you to call the front desk of your resort if there are any problems.

I am so glad to hear this. We are a family of 5, planning on an Early September 6 night 7 day vacation. I was thinking of adding the dining, but I was not sure if it would be worth it, but from your evaluation, absolutely!

Yes, one of the features of the MYW tickets is that you can get as many or as few days as you want. If getting the Dining Plan, the plan has to be for the entire stay (entire no. of nights). Hope this is clear. HTH

Thanks so much for the info! I added the Dining plan to our trip for Sept because I knew it would cost less that what we would spend on food. However, I was surprised looking at the brochure at the very limited choices in Epcot. This is one of our favorite parks. I guess the flip side is that we can pay for a meal there then choose a signature restaurant or dinner show another day!

I do have one question though. DH and I like to have wine with our dinner. I know that the dining plan includes a non-alcoholic beverage. Is there any problem separating out an alcohol purchase from the bill and paying for that??

No, no problem. I did this at Boma and they billed my KTTW card for my drink (or I could have used cash).

We didn't order the electric ice cube drinks because I didn't think they'd be included (they were $4.99 each, I believe). But I met someone on the bus who got one for her child and they included it as his drink (it was also his birthday celebration).

If you really want to order these drinks, go ahead, and figure you may (or may not) have to pay for them. If you do, you could always ask for a regular drink to go, which would have been included with your meal.

When we were at MGM for EMH it was pretty cold outside. At dinner DH got a coffee but I was still eating. We were running late for Fantasmic so our server asked if she could make me a hot coffee to go. I thought that was really nice (she was from MA so I think we bonded). And we weren't charged extra for either coffee.

I do think Disney is going to have to start keeping a tighter watch on kid vs. adult redemptions. I can see how it would work hugely in our favor for them to allow us adult meals for all of the counter service credits because DS and I can easily share one meal. We could eat lunch twice every day! LOL

As more people figure out how the plan works I think there will be more people figuring out how to manipulate it (like anything else!) and we will see more restrictions. From that aspect I think the folks using the plan at the very beginning will come out ahead.

But following the plan to the exact letter we STILL would have saved $150 on the food we ate, and we would have had 2 kid meals left over. I do think it is a good deal for some families. We had a blast at our three character meals in four days! We would absolutely do it again. Since we now have a little experience under our belts and we know how much we are likely to eat and so on I think it would save us a ton over the course of a longer stay! I am looking into booking our package through AAA so we can get a room discount and dining.

All week I couldn't help but compare this plan with the way food is handled on the Disney Cruise Line. It seems like so much waste but then again they're profitable in a big way. I somehow feel this is going to be similar for them, they'll still be profiting from people paying rack rate for the rooms, souveniers, etc... and I really think there'll be many people who don't use all their dining options. So I wonder if they'll ever make a big deal distinguishing between the adult and children's meals. If so they probably would have forseen that and set up the plan differently. JMO. Time will tell.

I think we'll each have a counter meal left over too when we leave the last morning. I am hoping to find something to purchase which we can put in the cooler in the car and eat on the long trip home. ANy suggestions? We'll either be leaving from Animal Kingdom or WL.

The trip we just took to Pop was our first time at WDW. I'm not really familiar with WL or AKL, but I would imagine they have cold sandwiches, fruit, bottled water, etc. that you could pack up in your cooler for the trip home.

If Pea-N-Me's hunch is correct about WDW not paying that much attention to adult vs. kid meals then we wouldn't have had any credits left over. One night DS and DH went back to the room and I bought 2 counter service meals at the food court that we shared in the room. Chances are we could have gotten them covered by the plan, which would have resulted in us saving more than $150 and not having any unused credits. Since DS wasn't with me they wouldn't have said I had to order from the kid menu.

But really, after I added up all of our receipts and made a chart of what would have been covered (yes, I am a bit anal that way) we would have come out way ahead with the plan. And if they would have been flexible enough to cover our chicken strips with our "kid credits" we really would have only paid for 2 breakfasts out of pocket. We ate breakfast at the airport Day 1, in the food court Day 2, Character breakfast Day 3, and counter service pastries at Epcot Day 4. With the plan our out-of-pocket food would have been maybe $50 total over 4 days!

I booked our October trip yesterday. AAA saved me $135, and we get $25 bonus Disney Dollars for booking in January. So that's like $160. Subtract off the annual membership cost (because we didn't have a membership before) and we are still about $90 ahead of booking through Disney. Now if the school district would pull their heads out of the ground and post the calendar for October I could finalize our dates and start working on airfare!!
