Just Back from SOG - Any Questions?

You and me both. I actually cancelled POR for this place and now I'm really upset. This is a once in a lifetime trip for my parents and if it's awful, it will be my fault :(

I just stayed at the Shades during one of our THREE evacuations in September.:(

I thought it was great! Yes, there was a broken elevator. But the rooms are huge, they all have refrigerators and double sinks/split baths. I loved the table by the balcony (with four chairs).

The hotel is really pretty to look at (kind of like a country lodge). The breakfast buffet was simple but the price was about half what you would pay at a disney resort. There was a great coffee bar and a poolside bar as well.

Some of the rooms are quite a walk from the lobby (ours was one that was way, way out there!).

I think you will enjoy it. There is not a disney-esqe theme to it but that never bothered me or my children. Service is good and it is true that there are some language barriers and limited training but the employees were friendly and tried very hard to please. It was nice to be around military folks again as my husband retired four years ago after 26 USMC years and we miss it!

Don't worry and enjoy your vacation. The Shades is a huge value and a beautiful resort.

Thanks for the encouragement. We chose Shades since this is the only trip my father will make and he is the qualified sponsor. We thought the ease of access to the monorail at the Poly would be wonderful for him (he is ECV bound) and the resort is really beautiful. Unfortunately almost all of our plans are based on having connecting rooms (dad will stay in at night and afternoon naps with the two children, they in one room, him in the other) and I don't know what we will do if we do not get connecting rooms. Since we are arriving at 5pm I'm concerned that others who arrive first will have their requests filled and we will lose out.

okay, enough venting. Your post gives me hope that we will enjoy the resort-only 13 days to go!

I agree... while you say you'll go back in a heartbeat, it doesn't sound like they were up to par. I hope they get it together by December!! LOL One thing puzzled me... the staff didnt' speak ENGLISH? What?

We stayed there in August and we didnt run into any of those problems. We ate at the buffet, the waiter kept our drinks full and he even gave my grandaughter an extra cherry for her cherry 7up. The bathroom was not near by (Yu had to go up the elevator for that) but other wise we found the food to be good the staff to be good. We were lucky and got rooms connecting. I emailed shades of green a reminder I requested 2 rooms together connecting about a week before I left and they said no problem in my response. We pre ordered a crib and it was there waiting for us. I thought it was every bit as good as Disney hotels we have been to for the ost part. At BEach CLub we waited over an hour to get home from Downtown Disney several times too. SO shades seems to be just as bad as the rest of them :-) We only used bus A in August and it was very much on time about every 15 minutes. We used the monorail to get to Epcot, And we drove to DownTown, Animal Kingdom and MGM so I have no Bus B experience to share.

I am sure those worried need to go and find out yourself. If your already booked and no other choices no need expecting the worst and finding out you worried for nothing. Wickedwicth (What a name???) even said she woudl go again in a minute so that must weigh in for something. I say go, have fun and make what you can of what you have. You may be surprised to learn its better than you thought.

I'm not worried about our trip, for we won't be spending the majority of our time in the room.... at least not awake! LOL We'll make the best of it no matter what!;)

We just returned from SOG on Oct. 18. We didn't have any of the problems mentioned. We were abe to get in our room early. Never had a problem with the bus transportation. This is the lst. time I have ever used the bus in Disney. DH had to use the car to get to a convention. We did walk to the Poly. to catch the monorail a couple of times. The food was OK at the breakfast buffet, you can't beat the price! All the employee's were very nice, we didn't have a problem with anyone. We have requested connecting rooms in the past & have gotten them. I love this hotel, I don't miss the "Disney Magic" I actually enjoy the peace of comming back to the hotel. My DS didn't seem to miss any disney theme. I love the size of the rooms & having a frig. Our stay here has always been excellent!

Please don't take my "criticisms" the wrong way. My Dad is retired military and they have been staying at SOG at least twice a year since it became available. They have never experienced the degree of problems we experienced on this last trip. I think it was mostly due to not being really finished for the grand opening and they were feverishly working on the golf course for the big tournament leaving other areas unfixed. I am sure after the tournament ends today they will go to work fixing the other things. Also this was the first time we didn't have a rental car and had to rely on SOG transportation. Most of our problems should have been easily fixed : label SOG buses, train employees to at least be able to understand enough English to recognize items ordered off the menu, repair restrooms and elevators immediately (these are necessities compared to replacing handrails which was going on constantly). BTW the request for adjoining rooms was made months ago and they did tell us right along that they don't promise. It was all the little annoyances that added up - no information in either room re: bus schedules, room service, hotel amenities, etc. We finally figured out that some info was avaialable on the TV but it was not intuitive to negotiate. Three days in a row we got no towels in our room even though I had left the dirty ones on the floor as their own signal that they needed to be replaced. Two days we had no sheet for the sofa bed and the blanket in our room was dirty when we checked in and not replaced the whole time we were there. Gee, looking back on it I really should have complained even more. LOL. The staff tried their best - they were extremely friendly and it was by no means their fault that they were not trained properly. And the other guests were exceptional compared to what we saw at some other resorts. I guess bottom line is that I think our military (active and retired) deserve the very best and SOG needs to work a little harder to live up to that. Valerie
BTW I chose my user name because I tried Cinderella when I was having a day when I felt my kids really didn't appreciate all I do for them but it was already taken. I decided to make a joke of our New England habit and pronunciation of calling things "wickid" (meaning extremely) as opposed to "wicked" (meaning bad). I am not a witch by religion or nature. I just have a sense of humor that not everybody appreciates.

And they're never going to attempt to fix these things unless people like you complain. Put it in writing. Mail it to SoG ATTN: Jim McCrindle (General Manager). Nothing will change unless unhappy people make their feelings known.

As for the English....all I can say is welcome to FL. I deal with it every day and yes, it is very frustrating. A few try to learn English but many seem to think they've moved to another island in the Caribbean where we should all be speaking Spanish. :)

First No : Thanks for the info on where to address my concerns. I agree that letting them know (hopefully in a constructive way) is the only way they can make things better. Valerie

Can someone please tell me if the store in SOG sells alcohol? DH really wants to know if they have beer or should we buy some before we leave?

I'm pretty sure I remember seeing beer/wine sold at the convenience store at shades of green. Come to think of it - I think they even had some pre-mixed drink type things, too, like margarita pouches, etc. I'm not 100% sure, but I think they did.

Just returned - Had one week stay at SOG.

This will be a "the good, the bad, and the ugly review of Shades of Green.

The hotel is beautiful. The grounds, water features, flowers and waterfalls are very lovely. The interior of the hotel is also very beautiful and comfortable. The greens look beautiful and we saw a lot of wildlife from our balcony.

The rooms are large and the beds comfortable. There is a small (dorm room size) frig in room and a very small coffee pot. It makes about 2 cups of coffee. You are given exactly 1 pouch of regular coffee per day. If you want more, or need de-caf, you may purchase it in the store. We were given one bar of soap and one bottle of shampoo on our arrival. They did not ever leave any more in the 7 nights we were there. There is a nice size balcony with 2 chairs and a small table. The closet is small but it does have a wonderful large safe in it. The room size would be comfortable for a family of 5 using the day bed and two queens. There is a small table with two straight back chairs.

Where our problem came in was with some of the staff. Our arrival at the front desk was met with a much less then a welcome greeting. There was no greeting. There were two women at the front desk and it was made very appearent before the end of our stay that they need more help at the desk. That is probably the reason why there is never a smile or any customer service at the desk.

The hotel is designed with very long hallways that turn into other long hallways, that angle off into another long hallway. You really do a lot of walking. We were on the 4th floor in at the far end of the new wing.

There was always a line, no matter what time of day you went to the front desk. Which is frequent due to fact you must pick up any packages, disney or otherwise at the front desk. If anyone sends you a gift or flower arrangement you must in person go down to the front desk, stand in the long line and sign off on a clip board to receive the item. Also, they wanted the sponsor only to do this. Unaware of this rule I went to the front desk, saw the long line and went to bell services to ask if they could get my disney package. I was informed that they were sorry, but Bell services is not allowed to do this. You must stand in line and sign for the package. After standing for 25 minutes in line they informed me that my husband would have to come down to sign for our disney package. My husband is in a wheelchair and was in our room getting ready for bed. It was 10:30 PM.

The housekeeping really needs training and managment. Our room was never cleaned. They make the beds, and gave us clean towels, wipe the sink out, leave a package of coffee and pick up their mousekeepers envelope. Period. Our soap dish, tub and coffee pot was never cleaned. I would dump out the old grounds and rise the pot out each evening after we came back. The room was never made up before 4:00 in afternoon. When I tried to talk to one of the maids in the hallway she told me she didn't speak english, but was going on break!

All in all I think SOG could be a really wonderful hotel and a great benefit to the military both retired and active with some training and either new management or better trained management. Our military active, retired or disabled deserve better and I will be writting a letter to the management. Perhaps sometime in the future we will give it a second chance. But, I think we will be staying in disney resorts with discount on our next visit.

If anyone has any questions, I would be happy to answer.

Okay, I'm officially back to being worried about SOG. We leave in 7 days. The reservations staff has been so wonderful I just have to wonder how everyone else can be so awful. We have been assured by the reservations staff that early room makeup service will not be a problem as long as we request it when we check in. Your post makes me think otherwise.

I guess in the overall scheme of things it won't matter to anyone but my father (who will spend the most time in the room) but I sure hope we have a better experience than most of those who've returned recently.

Trust me, we got back on 10/17 and never had a problem with anything. The check in was great, no line & they were very friendly. Everyone we came in contact with was very nice & made us feel very welcomed. Our room was made up early & very clean everyday, plenty of towels & soap. We had a shampoo dispenser that was on the wall in the shower filled with shampoo. We have always had a great experience here. I love the size of the rooms, there is alot of walking to your room, but even if we stayed at another hotel, we would be walking to the pool or food court or bus. I didn't find it that bad.

Thanks GJM. So far there have been as many good reports as bad ones and just as many lukewarm reports. I am a 'make the best of it' type so I will go down there expecting not much and hopefully they will surpass that expectation!
