I haven't stayed at Riverside in January....but we did stay in WDW last Jan. and from what I could tell it was very empty. I've heard that there are generally some lingering crowds from New Years for the first week....but that they drop off as you get further into the month.
Crowds can be unpredictable though.....July 5th at the MK wasn't too bad, but the 8th was awful! Who would have thought it? A holiday weekend Friday less crowded than Monday?
For reference, our room did not connect to any other room....but that doesn't necessarily mean there aren't connecting rooms. We did have a nice bench that looked like a trunk though! I assume that's where a connecting room door would be.
From what I can tell there must be an awful lot of water view rooms at Riverside if they consider the bayou a water view....I wonder if the upcharge for a water view is just for those who specifically want it and are willing to pay to be guaranteed it?...and if many folks who don't pay for it get that water view too.
The main pool did get crowded when it was nice out...we did some swimming in the rain and it was empty! (there was no thunder or lightning at the time...though I did see people in the pool when it was lightning!) The quiet pool would probably be more interesting for older boys.....they'll probably think the slide at the main pool is lame and otherwise the quiet pools aren't really that different from the main pool.
Goofy's sis....I think your strategy sounds very good....ask for a building where you can't really get a parking lot view and you'll get a view of plants, other buildings, pathways, and at worst some maintenance areas. Staying far from the parking definitely discourages the use of your car....when the bus is closer you don't even consider the car!
