We returned yesterday from the March 23rd Magic and I am here to tell you it was an AMAZING trip! I wanted to offer my brief opinions. The kids are in withdrawl from the experience and are begging to do this again. It was a great family vacation and one that we won't forget anytime soon. Disney does it right!

First, I am here to say that we did not get on the ship until about 1:30 and unlike what you hear on this board, we were in line with HUNDREDS of others and were still able to get Palo reservations as well as the surial mud bath at the spa with NO problems! I was so anxious about our flight being in the late morning and not being the first to get on the ship. It didn't matter whatsoever. We were able to have a lovely Topsiders buffet and make our reservations after that. My feeling is, do not make yourself crazy with anxiety, it will work out!

We loved our Category 4 stateroom. We were in 8500, as far forward as you can get! It was quiet, very spacious fo our family of four. I am a horrible packer and we had tons of room! We didn't even use all of the drawers! Our verandah was lovely and well worth it, in my opinion. As this was our fourth cruise, 1st with Disney, I am glad we did the verandah. Rodolpho was our host and he was terrific. Always smiling, towel animals a true peice of artwork! We never once used room service, didn't find the need to. I am a huge coffee drinker and there was plenty of it on deck nine, just one deck up!

I used the fitness center daily and it was always crowded at opening time, 7:00. So if you can wait to work out later, it may be less crowded.

The pool. This was the ONLY area of the ship that you feel the overwhelming numbers of people on the ship. YES, people reserve chairs as early as 7:00 AM even though you are not supposed to. No one stops rude families from reserving 10 chairs everyday! My advice, get up and save one chair for your family early or on at sea days you will not find a chair anywhere! On Thursday, our last at-sea day, people were viscious about their chairs. I was waiting to see a fistfight over a chair!

The shows were terrific and highly entertaining. We saw all of them and the kids loved them too. Disney Dreams is not to be missed! Brings tears to your eyes even if you are not a Disney fanatic!

St. Maarten - BRING EXTRA STRENGTH SUN SCREEN! Our son got very burnt, blisters and all even after using 45 sunscreen and applying it multople times! The sun is very strong and intense. We went to Kakoe beach at Orient Beach and rented comfy chairs, umbrella and towels. Well worth it. The kids loved it, met up with other kids to play with and we had a great time. But rememeber, the Caribbean sun is very strong so beware!

St. Thomas - Shopping is great at Charlote Amalie. We also went to Magen's Bay Beach and had another very sunny afternoon there. We rented chairs there as well. We brought towels from the ship that day and good thing, cause there were no towels to rent.

We took taxis at both islands with NO PROBLEMS! The locals are friendly and want you to have a nice day at their island. We made arrangements at both islands for taxis to come and get us when we were finished with our beach time. They came back at the arranged time, no worries!

There is plenty to do on board during the day if you don't want to be at the pool. There are movies, games, kids club activities galore. We had to investigate all of that due to our son's burns from the sun. He was busy all day making flubber in the kids club, seeing the Snow Dogs movie, going to the arcade, eating ice cream etc.

Our daughter (almost 11) made friends, had a great time hanging out at the pool, beach and kids club with kids her age. Our son (7 1/2) enjoyed the planned activities at his club and liked his counselors. He didn't really make attachments to other kids but still enjoyed it just the same.

I'd say we utilized the kids club about 10 % of the time, the rest of the time the kids were with us. There were days they never went to the kids club at all.

We had late seating APLAPLA. Truthfully, there are pros and cons to late seating. Not sure what I would do the next time. We are all exhausted at the end of a long day and it was hard for the kids to sit through dinner each night without looking like they were going to fall into their food! Our servers were AWESOME and we had an attachment to them. Girish and Stipe were excellent, friendly, helpful, and personable. We will miss them.
There were some nights when we went to the show, gave the kids dinner at topsiders and then took them to kids club when we went to dinner. Everyone was happy with that arrangement.

Things to bring and not--Forget the two way radios. We brought ours, tried to use them once, picked up everyone elses conversations and never used them again. The extension cord was VERY helpful as I did bring my own hairdryer and needed to plug it in by the desk. Bring your own dryer if you like your hair a certain way since the dryer there is not strong. We did bring our own hair conditioner as well. We did not bring our own sodas, water, liquor or anything else. We did get the kids each a package from The Perfect Gift which was a really nice surprise for them. We had an underwater camera in there for each of them with chips, sodas, and candies. I even surprised my husband with a package with his favorite beer, pretzels, brownies and cookies. Nice for a late afternoon snack.

Castaway Cay was a highlight and we rented the bikes, floats and snorkels. It was a great day. Do get off the ship immediately upon docking as people RACE for seats! They do. So, if you want an umbrella, get off the ship and walk directly to the family beach to get one. You will not get an umbrella if you wait. There are plenty of chairs though. We were in the first 20 to get off the ship and did NOT get a hammock. We did get an umbrella with four chairs. We loved it there.

What I learned from this board and from my trip.
1. Relax---it will all work out.
2. Have your own experience. Others details are great for some things but can make you crazy.
3.

3. I felt that some things for me were not a surprise due to my addiction to reading every last detail of others trips.

4. Have a wonderful time. You will.

The staff and crew are fabulous and really want you to have a trip of a lifetime. We certainly did. Enjoy!

Thank you for posting! It sounds wonderful (except for the chair situation on board)! We leave in 2 months and 15 days!

Thanks for the trip report. I am like you and read them all:D It is ashame that people have to be so greedy:( I don't need anything that badly. Thanks also for the tip on the sunscreen. God bless and HAPPY EASTER!:sunny:

Thanks for your report. I will definetly take your advice on the chair and sunscreen topics. My DH is from England and i'm irish/scotish so you can imagine our skin and the skin tone of our kids....do they make complete body wraps :D Thanks Again!!

DCL, if you're reading this, please direct the CM's to be more assertive about enforcing the "no chair saving" rule.

Ouch!

This bears repeating, folks. If you buy FRS radios, make sure you get the ones with the additional filtering codes. If you get the ones without this feature, you'll hear everybody using your channel, and you won't appreciate the radios.

Thanks for your report, Cheryl.

EEK! I find this a little disappointing..having to fight for chairs?! OK, so tell me, when can I reserve a chair and where do I go..My husband and I plan on staying close to the ship, mostly, because we have a two year old and will hardly do excersions.
I guess I just figured with all the money you're shelling out, creature comforts like pool chairs would be plentiful!

Ok, let me clarify, if you are staying on the ship when the ship is at St. Maarten and St. Thomas, you should have no problems getting chairs since most people are off the ship. It is the "at-sea" days when the weather is warm and sunny and everyone wants to sit at the pools. Since most people have children, they are sitting at the Mickey and Goofy pools. There are many lounges as well as table and chairs both in and out of the sun BUT, certainly with 2600 people on boars, there are not enough to go around. Don't panic! Get up and save 1 chair with your pool bag and you should be fine. The problem is that most people are not acually "at the pool" until around 9:00 - 9"30 and so you'll see all of the chairs with stuff on them way before that time and yet no one around! So, even though they say not to save seats, it truly is the only way to get yourself a seat.

Welcome back Cheryl! Sorry we never got a chance to meet on the ship - -although I know I must have seen you as I was one of the cast of THOUSANDS in the gym at 7 every day. We had a great trip as well. We spent last night at the POLY and just didn't want our trip to end! :D

Hi Cheryl,
Boy you are quick with a trip report!!!!I haven't had time yet. I've been washing and resting. I had the best time and I agree about the sunscreen. Both my children got burned at Castaway Cay!!They're fine now and they are trying to talk grandparents into going back next spring break with the cousins.Mine really didn't use the clubs at all. My 9 yo DD went twice and said it was OK and the 7 DS never went. He hung out playing pingpong and the arcade. They liked having the freedom and getting food whenever they wanted.Mine were tired at dinner (late seating) too but the waiters were AWESOME!!!We had INYOMAN,ROBERT and GEDE. Robert hurt his leg and had to be off of it after Tuesday dinner.I might post a report under trip reports soon. Nice to meet you all on the trip. About the chairs at the pool- I actually just sat in one that had a towel in it. I thought it was absolutely ridiculous that every chair was reserved b/f 10AM.Kathryn

After suffering from many sunburns as a child and as an adult, I feel compelled to offer my advice on it.

You should apply the sunscreen about 30 minutes BEFORE you go out where the sun is. This gives it a chance to protect your skin. If you apply it in your cabin and then leave for a shore excursion or for Castaway Cay, that would be enough time. I also recommend reapplying it, and especially after swimming.

There are also several medications that increase your susceptibility to a sunburn, especially antibiotics. I recommend reading the drug information sheet and not relying on the Pharmacy to apply a warning sticker to the bottle.

If you do become sunburned, there is a bottle of 'After Sun' lotion that is sold in the sundries area of the Treasure Ketch shop on deck 4 forward (also available at various stores on land). It's green and it has a large amount of aloe in it. Within minutes of applying it, it provides relief and restores moisture to the affected area.

The best method is to avoid getting a sunburn in the first place.

Yes, there are the equivalent of "all body wraps" of sunscreen for children. Here's a link to a site that lists lots of websites that sell them:

http://www.plasticsurgery4u.com/web_links_folder/sun_protection.html

My DD has an Australian sun suit/swimsuit that is an SPF 50 equivalent that covers her neck, arms to the elbow and legs to the knee. I will be purchasing one of the hooded suits for my 9mo DS for the cruise. They dry very quickly and minimize the amount of sunscreen needed as well as the amount of sun damage.

Some may call it tacky, but after the sunburn I got last time while snorkling, I will be wearing a t-shirt into the water over my swimsuit next time.

It's not tacky... it's sensible and recommended. You really expose your back to the sun when you're snorkeling, and you're more vulnerable because the sun is stronger because it's reflecting off the water... and it's harder to keep sunscreen on since you're wet. Definitely wear the t-shirt while snorkeling.

I have used and will continue to use the sun suits for my four children. They wore them on our last cruise all the time, they dry quickly (as stated above) and really are quite cute (you can get the boy color ones and girl color ones). My DH always wears a shirt outside - even in the water - he was born and raised in south Florida and says he's had enough sun in his lifetime! I'm not quite that good but do slather on the sunscreen. Nothing "tacky" about protecting your skin and possibly avoiding serious consequences........

My very fair kids wear "rash guards" over their suits. These are the light-weight, fast drying shirts worn by surfers and work very well to minimize sun damage.

LL Bean carries them, and they're available in surf shops.

I was also on the 3/23 cruise and while it was a really wonderful time, the chair situation at the pools was very irritating. The second day at sea, we didn't make it up to the pool area until about 11:30. We walked all around the entire deck 9 and 10 for two chairs in the sun and could not find any. We ended up going down on deck 9 and sitting at a table in the shade until we saw someone leave a chair and slowly moved in. It took until 2pm until both my husband and myself had a lounge chair. There was one chair that was next to me and had a pair of flip flops on it, no one showed up for the two hours I was there!

I don't mind people saving one chair, but I saw chairs saved for hours and people would stop by, get something from their bag on the chair and leave again! With people coming and going, I think that if they didn't save chairs, you could probably always get one when you really wanted one. Not sure what Disney can do except have someone out there specifically watching for it. Oh well, still had a great time!

All those who will be wearing t-shirts in the water snorkling raise your hand...

*raises hand*

I burn fairly easily and will be scolded by my dr if I get a sunburn again. It never fails if I go to the beach I burn and blister. After having a mole removed a few years ago from my back that came back abnormal I always take the extra protection and normally stay in the shade.

I have ordered the Sea Safe 30 for the kids and the nose stuff =)

Could someone please post the link to A Perfect Gift.
