After a week at Disney with free dining, we transferred to the Royal Pacific Resort at Universal for 3 nights. I can honestly say we enjoyed the Universal portion of the trip more than the Disney portion of the trip. Here's why:

  1. IoA has frozen butterbeer. We loved this stuff! I've tried the infamous Dole Whips at WDW, and hated them (I do not like tart flavors), so I much preferred the butterscotchy goodness of butterbeer!
  2. Universal has the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I was blown away by the level of detail inside Hogsmeade and Hogwarts. For example, the Sorting Hat animatonic looked like it had been plucked straight from the movies. Simply amazing!
  3. The lack of strollers (and crowds in general with the exception of Harry Potter section). The crowds at Disney the week of Memorial Day were sometimes overwhelming, especially navigating the walkaways. At Uni, the walkway crowds were very manageable.
  4. The friendliness of the staff at RPR and the parks. Everywhere we went, we found friendly staff who greeted us warmly. At Disney, I could tell the castmembers were worn out from the crowds.
  5. The Royal Pacific Resort. Lovely hotel! We had stayed at Coronado Springs the week prior, and the contrast between the two resorts was startling. Now, I know that CSR is not a deluxe level resort, but I was dismayed with how unfriendly the CSR staff was. At RPR, everyone was so friendly!
  6. More thrill rides. My DD and DH love thrill rides (last year, we drove 13 hours to Cedar Point, and they LOVED it). We especially liked Spiderman, Hulk, Mummy, Simpsons, and MIB. We didn't care for Rip Rockit.
  7. The cheekiness of the attractions. I loved the irreverant humor everywhere (especially in Shrek and the Simpsons). While I will always love Disney, a little dry humor was refreshing!
  8. The compactness of the resorts and proximity to the parks. After Disney, my legs and feet were worn out. It was so nice not to have to walk forever to get from attraction to attraction. Also, FOTL access was awesome.
  9. The quality of the restaurants. We ordered room service one night at RPR, and the food was great. Also, our dinner at Hard Rock was the best of the trip (and we also dined at Le Cellier/Brown Derby/etc while at Disney).

My one concern was the massive crowds in Harry Potter. I really hope that Uni decides to expand HP, since it could really use some additional space to disperse the crowds. When I mentioned this to DD, she said she would LOVE to see an area devoted to the Forbidden Forest or Diagon Alley. Sounds like a grand idea to me! Also, our second day at HP, the frozen butter beer machines weren't working at the Hog's Head nor the carts. We were able to get the frozen version at the Three Broomsticks. So, if this happens to you, ask around--a friendly employee directed told us the Broomsticks was still serving the frozen version.

Here are some tips:

1. If you don't want an Ollivander wand (the wands based on your birthdate), buy the character wands at the front of the park or at the main store at the Studios. Dervish and Bangs was a mad house!
2. If you are staying onsite, take advantage of the early hour entrance to HP. It made a world of difference! We rode FJ twice, and then watched the Ollivander experience prior to opening. Once the park opened, HP became a mad house. We then did the castle tour so I could take pictures . . . make sure you hang around Dumbledore's office to watch the floating books and stick around the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom for at least 15 minutes so you can watch the surprise!
3. I didn't learn this until day 2, because the employee manning the Butterbeer cart forgot to tell me. You can refill your Butterbeer mug with fountain drinks for only $.85! After the bar keep at Hog's Head told us this when we purchased our second commemorative mug, we got drunk on Coke Zero for the next two days! :)

Thanks everyone from these boards for providing great tips! If anyone has any questions, let me know. I will be posting a trip report soon with lots of pictures.

I love your thoughts and tips! Isn't it wonderful! I loved the WWoHP too. Is the surprise in the Dark Arts class... "a cold white" surprise? :)

An expansion with Diagon Alley and the Forbidden Forest would be superb!

Imagine a Kilimanjaros Safari (ride) in the Forbidden Forest! :cool1:
I would add Hagrids Hut in the expansion.

Cheers!

very happy to hear that you were happy.............

hope you return soon!

Well, I think Universal has made it somewhat clear that what we currently have of HP was only the first phase of the project. From the rumors going around, it seems like Diagon Alley will be the next phase of the expansion which will remove everything on that side of the park until just before Mythos (they will not touch an award winning restaurant). The Posideon Adventure show is rumored to be getting replaced with indoor roller coaster based on the bank that is on Diagon Alley (I can not think of the name right now). Also, the Sinbad show will get replaced with a HP themed show (although I have my doubts about this becuase JK has been very strict that they are NOT allowed to have characters from the movies walking around the parks and such. The only characters that can be shown are if they are played by the actors in the movies). Also, I think they will move the Ollivander wand shop into Diagon Alley where it really belongs and in doing so, they will increase the size of the building and create a better line becuase of how popular it is.

Of course, this is all a rumor at this point. I am fairly sure that Universal will continue to expand this area of the park. However, I do not see anything major happening anytime soon. The crowds around there are already insane and adding construction into the mix would just make it even worse. My guess would be work starting in the fall of 2012.

Ohhh, A Forbidden Forest Safari Ride would be splendid! Especially if it included . . . dragons!

Sounds like you had a great time.

I hope they make a ride like Gringott's, I think the one in the final movie would be great. Well I've only seen the Trailer but it looks spectacular. Even the carts from the first movie would be really neat.

I'm thinking about a return trip but the crowd levels being reported now are scary. It was so not crowded when we were there, I'm afraid I'm spoiled.

Mcraven--we will definitely be back. My mom (who just retired from teaching 7th grade English this year and had many a student fall in love with reading because of JK Rowling) and I are going back next year in the fall and plan on staying one night at RPR and two days at Uni!

Badge--good to hear expansion plans are in the works, even if it is just a rumor. Universal did such a good job with the current park I can't wait to see what's next. And, Gringott's is the name of the Goblin bank in Diagon Alley. I'm such a nerd!

Thanks for the post.

going for the first time in August, really looking forward to it...each new trip report just gets me that much more excited!

$.85 for drink refills is a really good deal. I must keep that in mind.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Endorse the Nerd'um. Bring out the nerd'um.

I'm glad you enjoyed the park and encourage you to try all three of the hotels! Each one of them is unique and offers a different experience! PBH is by far my favorite but I will be trying RPH in the fall. I also encourage you to get an AP if you haven't already! You will save a lot on food, merch, hotels, and tickets for others!

It still is for souvenir cups. I'm not sure why mugs are better... Or maybe this is with tax?:confused3

if you look at the sticky by damo, pictures of the menu, it lists the refill costs as mentioned by a few of the posters also.

the beverage drink cups (beverage deal) are valid for the current day/ and in some cases trip only.
they are marked on them to valid for purchase date only.
or something like that.

came back to say the .85 is with tax.
