:D Well, we actually got back a few days ago, I've been too busy to post. Here's a brief synopsis:
We stayed at HIFS for 6 nights, and we loved it! We had 5 in our suite, and were not crowded at all. As previously reported, it is a tight squeeze when the sofabed is pulled out, but we only pulled it out at bedtime, so it was no big deal. It was really great having the three separate sleeping areas, three TVs, etc. The hotel itself was very clean and extremely kid-oriented. The kids LOVED the pool, and would have probably been happy to stay at the hotel everyday and go swimming! It was very close to the parks and Downtown Disney. There were a lot of activities for the kids; we wished we had planned more nights at the hotel to take advantage of them (clown, face painting, magic show, karaoke, bingo, more that I can't remember). The free breakfast buffet was fine (nothing fancy but absolutely fine and a real money-saver). The ONLY complaint we had was that the dinner buffet was not very good. We ate there 3 nights, and that was 2 times too many. I would caution anyone who is considering the Family Values plan, which includes buffet every night. That said, there are a lot of places to eat nearby, if you have a car. Shoney's, Ponderosa, Red Lobster, McDonald's, and of course all of the DD restaurants are right down the road. We will definitely stay there on our next trip, but will plan more dinners elsewhere. All in all, we were thrilled with HIFS and recommend it to anyone with young children. If anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer them:D

I'm so Glad you had a great time!!

We loved our Disney themed Kidsuite! We had 3 Adults and 1 teen and a 1 yr old baby, complete with a crib and high chair[provided by the hotel]! We had plenty of room. We[the parents of teen and older daughter w/grandbaby] loved the Door on the Master bedroom!! We split the showers,2 persons at night, the 2 in morning plus the baby's bath. And that worked great!!

I thought there were enough different things at breakfast for several days before you repeated the same meal.

We will definately stay at HIFS again!!

For the good report! We'll be checking in on the 30th, so are glad to hear good things. I have to say that so far I've had excellent customer service from their reservation department, which is amazing since we've changed our plans about a jillion times since May! I think we finally have everything settled. DS and I will be sharing a classic suite (each bedroom has a queen bed) with my DM and DSF. With his senior rate, each family will only be paying about $50/night, so I'm thrilled. DS can't wait to try all that fun kid stuff...

Yea! I feel so much better !!! We are staying at the HIFS Starting this Thurs for 7 nights. I was beginning to get really really apprehensive about my choice due to all of the negative posts a few weeks ago. Now I'm reading alot of positives and I'm soooo relieved.
HIFS just seemed to be the perfect place to stay with our 2yo twins and our pre-teen; it looks like it offers a little something for each of us. I'll post when we get back to let y'all know how we made out! 6 days and counting........

I would like to know how it was to stay off-site. Did you use there bus? We just returned from 1 week at DD Marriott and loved it. However, I have 4 kids, so I have to get 2 rooms or something like HIFS and I don't think I'll get great rates like this next year so we probably won't be able to afford to stay on site. If you drove your own car, how was that experience? I will have to say that our bus dropped us off at TTC for MK and we did think it easier when we parked at MK parking and took the tram up to TTC(pretty lazy,Huh?) Also, we have decided to stay at parks all day so taking a midday break is not a priority. My main concern is about feeling like a second class citizen staying off site. I also like idea of kids eating free. What meal are free? Where exactly is the hotel? Thanks for any info!!

dutton:
We did not use their transportation, so I can't comment on that. We like to come and go at our own leisure, rather than being stuck on a schedule. The drive to the parks was a breeze. The routes are well marked and there is virtually no traffic at all. I didn't actually time the trips, but I would guess that Animal Kingdom is the longest drive, about 15 minutes. MK and ST are slightly closer, and EC and DD are definitely less than 10 minutes. From what I have read, the resort buses and monorail are not much faster, if at all. We certainly didn't feel like second class citizens.
If your kids are young, HIFS is a GREAT place to stay. It probably has more to offer the kids than most of Disney's deluxe accomodations. If your kids are older they will not get as much out of it, and if you are looking for a luxury hotel, you may be disappointed. It really depends what your priorities are.
Breakfast is free for everyone. It is standard buffet fare, nothing fancy but certainly adequate for breakfast and you can save a ton of money by eating a big (free) breakfast and not having lunch in the parks. We brought snacks into the park (nutrigrain bars, granola bars, raisins, etc., and of course we had to get ice cream for the kids). That was more than enough to hold us over until dinner. The dinner buffet at the hotel is not very good, unfortunately. It was our ONLY disappointment with the HIFS. We didn't use the food court so I can't comment on that, but kids eat free there from (10-5)? I'm not positive about the times, but you can double-check. They have Pizza Hut, A&W and an Ice Cream counter (can't think of the name at the minute). Also, there are lots of places to eat within easy driving distance. Oh, it is about 20 minutes from the airport, again an easy drive with very little traffic.
I know this is long, but hopefully I answered all of your questions! :D

Thanks for your reply. I have wanted to stay there, so I think now we will try it. Can you tell me where it is. I know most things are off exits 25,26and 27. Thank you!

Dutton: I was reading this thread and happen to have the HIFS brochure in front of me.

The address is:

Holiday Inn Family Suites Resort
Lake Buena Vista
14500 Continental Gateway
Orlando, FL
1-877-387-5437

From the Florida Turnpike southbound: Follow to interstate 4 West (Exit 259). Travel West approx. 10 miles to State Road 536 (exit 26A). Travel East approx. 1 mile to the HIFS entrance on right.

Hope this helps!

A question for you...how about a 14 year old at this hotel. Is it all geared towards younger children. We will also be on the Disney cruise before this so he (our 14yr. old) will have had enough of "little kid things"...what's your opinons?

I had a 10, 16 & 17 year old there two weeks ago. They all loved it! My older kids had fun going to the Kareoke (OK, I don't know how to spell it!) place without an adult.

We just got back from HIFS too! We must have been there at the same time MrsMud. :D I'd have to say that I agree with everything you said. We had 3 young kids and they loved the place. The pool area is fantastic! There were definitely a lot of young kids but I wouldn't say it was overrun with them. I saw plenty of teens as well. I think the arcade is geared more towards the older crowd, there were only about 2 or 3 games my kids could play.

I thought the breakfast buffet was good - free breakfast for 5 of us, big money saver! I think there was a wide enough selection that you didn't get sick of it. I agree about the dinner buffet as well - not so great. I think we used our vouchers 3 nights, definitely enough.

We used the food court for lunch a few times and that worked out well. Up to 4 kids can eat free if 1 adult buys an entree and a drink. Pizza Hut had these "personal pizzas" for about $4. I ordered one of those and a drink and each of my 3 kids got to order for free. They had a choice, cheese pizza (a whole personal pizza), pb&j, hot dog, hamburger, nuggets, etc. with fries and drink included. One time I got 4 pizzas and 4 drinks for under $6. And you know how young kids eat, maybe 1 piece each so basically dh ate for free too!

We didn't go to any of the night entertainment but it looked fun. I saw alot of older kids during the karaoke.

We used our own car to get to the parks, very easy! With the little ones we didn't want to be tied down to a shuttle schedule. We even did a mid day break and returned later with no problems. We didn't feel like 2nd class citizens at all, once you're in the park, everyone is part of the magic. We actually ran into people we knew from home at MK and they were staying at the All Stars. They said it was fun but didn't like not having a refrigerator and said it was hard trying to put the kids to bed because they were all in the same room. She actually sounded a little jealous when I told her about our 3 tv/vcrs, fridge, microwave, coffee maker, separate bedrooms for everyone, etc.

The kids loved having their own Disney themed room and bunk beds. Each bunk also had it's own light and speaker from the tv. That way one could watch and the other could sleep if they wanted. It was very clean and the staff was nice. We did need a couple of things but everything was taken care of immediately when we called the front desk. It's not a luxury hotel but it is perfect for families. We would definitely stay here again.

Oh, the only other thing is that we were in building 12 and it was a long walk to the main building. Not so bad to do it once or twice but after several times a day it got very tiring. You may want to request a room in a closer building.

We also used the Play FLA lottery deal. You do not have to be a Florida resident. Not only that, they never even asked for my ticket!

I think that covers everything! Any other questions?

I'm so glad to hear all of the positive feedback on this hotel. We are taking 10, 12, 14 yr. in October for our 1st WDW trip! :Pinkbounc I had reserv. at HIME but changed them to HIFS when I found out (through here!) about 2 bedroom suites. With all the entertainment, we've only made plans for one evening out and expect to spend the rest at the hotel. We're there 6 nights. Got a great rate of $109.00 with code WT3. I found this on the main page one day -- and haven't seen it since! Glad I jumped in it.:D Anyone been to Medieval Times?

Hello BrennyK- We did it our last trip to WDW. It was a lot of fun. The kids liked the show, but they were not to keen on the food. They serve all dinner with no silverware so be prepared to get your hands dirty( broiled chicken, ribs, biscuit and dessert) The servers work for tips, so don't be afraid to ask for extra drinks or more of certain foods that any kids would want( extra chicken instead of ribs) they really try to please you. The place is a tourist trap. They do the hard sell to get you to buy things. We did buy some things for the kids and didn't mind the extra costs. Get there early. Once inside get a seat on the steps by the ropes and park yourself there. When your group(the knight you will be cheering for, they choose this for you) is called, you'll be the first in and then you can sit in the second row of seats instead of paying extra for the first row.
P.S.- If anyone in your group has a birthday in the month you go call in advance and that person can get in free with a full paying adult. They also announce their name at the end of the evening events.

Could you please more detail on what you did not like about the buffet? Was it the quality of the food (e.g., overcooked? undercooked? not enough variety?, under- or overseasoned?, etc.)

Thanks

I wanted to add that the Nintendo 64 games for the Kid suites, rent for $5.00 per 24 hours. We thought this was a great price. And the game really helped when our Dd was sick for a dat and a 1/2!!

We stayed at HIFS from Sat. 6/22/02 to Sat. 6/29/02.

Our room was 501 which is right around the corner from the main lobby and on the ground floor. We enjoyed being on the ground floor as we didn't have to wait for the elevators. Even being right in front of the parking lot, the room was quiet.

My kids 11 & 14 enjoyed their own rooms as did my DH and I. What we enjoyed most was having a sofa and chair to sit in while watching tv at night. You can rent as many videos as you want for 3 days @ $11.99.

We also went down the street (about 2 miles) to Walgreens and the grocery store across the street to buy water, gatorade, and other stuff to store in the refrigerator. We also used the fridge to cool our aqua cool bandanas. (We didn't find the bandanas that useful).

The complimentary security safe also made us feel more secure, and there were two sets of hair dryers and mirrors (one in the bathroom, the other in the master bedroom).

We loved everything about our room. The room was very clean each day and plenty of towels were given to us. I only have two minor complaints, 1) the dining chairs were a little sticky and 2) the front door had a space opening that let air in and small Florida flying bugs. I am not use to Florida bugs.

We didn't use the hotel transportation and just used our rental car. The WDW theme parks are about 4-5 miles away. The 1-2 miles they claim on the HIFS brochures must be to the WDW front welcome arch/gate.

My 14 year old daughter could have cared less about the kiddie pool, but my 11 year old son loved it. Because of the lighting and thunder, you had to keep getting out of the pool. We didn't have time to visit the video archades or do any of the night entertainment.

The breakfast buffet was good for a free buffet. It had scrambled eggs (w & w/o cheese), a variety of cut fruit, variety of different potato wedges, cereal, oatmeal, bagels, doughnuts, toast, apple juice, orange juice, milk, coffee, chocolate, jello, and yogurt. Everyday the would have either sausages, ham, or bacon.

The dinner buffet was different each day. Again, I don't think it was bad for free. I got the $109 family value plan that included the dinner buffet. However, I don't think it was worth the regular $13.99. My kids didn't like the buffet, so they ate the Pizza Hut personal pizza on some of the days. Every day they have roast beef. Some days it is overcooked, but on other days it was good. The salad items are standard: romaine, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggs, raisins, sunflower seeds, almond slices, bacon bits etc. w all the different types of dressing. They usually offer a vegetable, rice or potatoes, soup, and about three different meat entrees. One day they had ribs, chicken and corn on the cob, another day it was pastas and lasagna, another day it was baked fish and chicken. They also have a small kids buffet which included, hotdogs, spaghetti, chicken nuggets, corn fritters, macaroni and cheese. Every day it was a little different. The best day was the Friday seafood buffet. MY DH and I enjoyed the all you can eat crab legs. The buffet also comes with a drink. Desert was usually ice cream with different toppings. One day, it was cherry cobbler. Again, the dinner buffet was great since it saved me about $200-$250 over a week's time, but if I had to pay full full price, I would go somewhere else.

Don't forget to give HIFS the $10 coupon for gas. You can probably get a coupon at the Holiday Inn Web site. I got mind out of the Sunday newspaper coupon section. If you fill out your HIFS survey, the hotel will give you a choo-choo train cookie cutter as a souvenir. They also give you a 5 X 7 family picture for free, but we didn't have time to do that. Also, if you use the laundry room and the machines don't work, make sure you ask for a refund.

Well, that covers it for me. If you have any HIFS questions, please let me know. I tried to point out some items that were not mentioned above. Overall, we were very pleased with HIFS. It was definitely worth the value.

Hi! Thanks for your post. I have a question. How was the main bed? I have ressies for Radisson Resort Parkway but heard the bed was hard. I can't have that and HIFS looks great from what I've read.
