We spent a wonderful week at HHI-our first visit. It truly exceeded our expectations! I'll just post a quick overview and will be happy to answer any questions.
We stayed in a 1BR in the main lodge-we were on the third floor and faced the marsh area. The villa is very spacious and we loved having coffee and breakfast on the huge balcony every morning. The beach house is beautiful the the HH beach is wonderful-we have a place at the MD shore (on the bayside) and we have a beautiful beach, but the water is cold and the waves are usually too big (for me, anyway!)-it was so great to just walk in the water and swim without fearing for your life! The water was so warm!
The crowds in September are much smaller than summer months-we walked into every restaurant we wanted without a reservation and no waits. The weather was perfect-just one overcast day, so went to Savannah. In short, it was paradise! Great CMs, beautiful resort-I urge everyone to visit at least once and see for yourself! :)

Glad you had a great time! even in the winter it is a nice and relaxing place to be. One of our favorite places to call "home".:thumbsup2

Can you tell me if beach umbrellas were available to rent during the time you were there? And was the grill open on the beach side? We were there in October a few years ago and things were shut down over there. Never saw a cast member!

We were there a few weeks ago and had an amazing visit as well! It exceeded our expectations, and we are already planning a trip for next September. I think it is a great time to go - still warm weather but less crowds. Glad you enjoyed it!

I'm so glad you enjoyed your trip! We call HHI our happy place! When we crosss the bridge, the cares and stresses of daily life stay on the mainland! Just can't wait until spring break!!

DW and I were just there to celebrate our 25th Anniversary the weekend you left. We were there the 19th - 21st, although it was a little late when we arrived on Friday. We were in a studio on the third floor of the main lodge.

Yes, the grills were being used at the resort and the beach house-the beach house was open until 8:00 every night while we were there. There was still a lifeguard on duty at the beach (but not the pool at the beach house) and we saw him renting the umbrellas and chairs-we brought our own, but the rentals were really nice and I understand they will set them up for you every day.
What a wonderful place to spend your 25th anniversary! Congratulations! Did you go to any of the restaurants? I wanted to mention in my other post we visited a great little place called The Grumpy Grouper-nothing fancy, but reccomended by a local resident to us for lunch or dinner. Very reasonable and great seafood!

By the "grill" at the beach side, are you referring to Signals, the counter-service restaurant there?

They operate on shorter hours during the off-season, but not sure if they are ever fully closed down... I know that the bar at the beach house is not open year 'round, however....

My husband and I are heading to this resort for the first time in October, for my 40th..........just us two. I reserved a 1BR and since I have never been to Hilton Head before was wondering about the room location. I'm confused about the views and also staying in the resort itself? I love convenience, but this trip I am looking for some R&R, some romance, and some "me time". I love coffee in the morning, especially on the balcony at the Boardwalk, but I want to get a different more relaxed feel and really enjoy myself. No hurries or noise of the pool- so that view is definately out! I guess an ocean view is not an option either. Please explain why I would stay in the resort so I can maybe request a room there. Is it location, restaurants, or convenience?

Thanks for your help!

There are only 21 1BR villas at the HH resort. 16 of those are located in the lodge and have either a Marsh View or Island View. The Marsh views are great as they look out over Broad Creek, which is a tidal marsh with lots of wildlife to enjoy. We've seen dolphin, otters, a manatee and all sorts of shore birds and osprey from the Lodge villas. The island view villas will all have interior views of the island the resort was built on - some are wooded views with a look towards other resort buildings, but the lodge "island" view villas also have a glimpse of the marsh.

The other 5 1BR villas are located beneath one of the five GVs at HH. None have a pool view. Some have the Marsh View and others have the Island View. These villas are sometimes a little noisy if the GV above is occupied as the wood floors will conduct sound. Either way, the 1BR villas are great.

The lodge area (Buildings 11/12) has a parking garage under the building and elevator access. The other buildings all have surface parking.

Have a wonderful birthday celebration! :)

Sounds like you had a great trip!
We can't wait to go back for a weekend next month!

I was going to do a trip report, but haven't had the chance yet. The CMs knew it was our anniversary and helped to make it very special. They recommended we eat at Charley's Crab (beside Hudson's, near the bridge from Bufford) and made the reservation for us. It was fantastic as much for the experience as it was for the food. It is a little pricier than some, but we were looking for somewhere special so it was what we expected, and more. Since the resort made the reservation for us, we got VIP seating and VIP treatment by the staff at the restaurant, which only made it that much more special.

I can't add a whole lot to what Webmaster Doc already said, but this was our third trip to HHIR and every one of them has been great. It is a great place for R&R and romance as well as family time if that is what you're looking for (first two trips were with family). If you can, get a room overlooking the marsh. It is very relaxing to just sit out on your balcony and enjoy the view with your cup of coffee or favorite adult beverage.

Even though you don't have the theme parks, there is still tons to do at HHIR. Depending on your definition of relaxing, if you enjoy nature you can walk on the beach (should still have very good weather in Oct.), take a kayak trip and view the dolphins, the resort sponsors a multitude of nature walks, or you can opt for a dolphin cruise or sunset cruise on the water. If it is your style, you can rent bikes a multitude of places, including the resort (opt for the length of stay rental, a much better deal). Hilton Head may be the most bike friendly place around. There are trails everywhere, and this is a great way to get around the island (you will see lots of people doing just that).

Otherwise, there are lots of restaurants, shopping and entertainment options very close to the resort that you can reach quickly in your car. The CM will give you a rather large package at check-in that has maps and details so you can find pretty much anything you would be looking for. The dining guide has menues and prices for a lot of the restaurants, so you can see ahead of time if it suits your taste and pocketbook.

If the CMs know it is your birthday, I'm sure they will do things to make it extra special just like they did for our anniversary. If you are there on the weekend and want some suggestions, see if you can find Sandy (she does a lot of the nature walks, etc.). She has lived there a while and she will suggest the really good restaurants instead of just the popular tourist places. All of the CMs we have dealt with have always been very friendly and helpful, so you should have a great time.

And :bday:

These were the most helpful responses I have ever gotten! Thank you so much for your help. It's weird going somewhere new, that's not Disney World, and not knowing anything at all. With the information I learn on here I know I will make the best choices for my trip. Thanks again.

Doc, I think you have answered this before but i can't find the thread. What buildings are the GV's in? TIA

So basically it looks like if you want a Studio that is not in the Lodge but want a marsh view, building 18 is the only choice. I'm thinking next year, we might ask for that unit if it is free. The Lodge is fine, but I'd like to stay in a different building next year if possible. Thanks for posting this Doc.

That studio in building 18 would still be under a GV, right?

Yes, all 5 of the studios not in the lodge are under one of the GVs. There are no buildings with more than one GV. The Studios under the GVs tend to be a little quieter than the 1BRs though, since the studios are located under the master BR. The 1BRs are under the kitchen/dining room/living room area of the GVs and the wood floors can be noisy, even if the GV guests are not being rambunctious, it's just a factor of the conductivity of the floors themselves.

We've stayed in 1BRs under the GVs and had no noise at all and also found times when the same GV sounded like a small herd was staying there. (I suspect that the GV was unoccupied during the quiet times. :) )
